popeye the sailor reacted to East Ender in Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - WAK - 1/33 - CARD
Following this build. Our entire family worked for Grumman on Long Island, my dads father on the F4F Wildcat, my moms dad on the F8F Bearcat through the A-6 Intruder, both my father and I on the F-14 Tomcat. Enjoy the build!

Unless you scratch built the control panel with all the levers… it’s easy to see the quality differences in kits available. The P-40 I’m working on has no where near the level of detail this kit has.

Great start Chris! Looking forward to seeing what you do with these kits.

Got a smidge done so far -- cockpit bits. The intermediate-level nature of the kit is evidenced by the mix of 3-D detail parts and plain 2-D printed surfaces. No provision is made for glazing the instrument panel.

Great to see/hear from you, Lou.
I decided to give it a try after I saw an Asian modeler reveal his technique for it. Other methods had you building a jig and using a different type of flexible wire. While both methods had merit, the one I chose seemed the path of least resistance. The trick became sourcing the stainless-steel wire and aluminum tubing of sufficiently small gauge. I found that insect specimen pins came in a variety of small sizes from 5-0 all the way up and readily available on Amazon. The micro aluminum tubing I found from a hobby shop on Ebay.

I have done this as well for a couple of my 1/24 early Ferrari's, even though they were from kits you used to be able to buy. It is not easy to do even from a kit. Yours turned out great, congratulations.

That’s a huge improvement Craig, I’d say well worth it compared to the moulded spokes 👏

Overall, I am satisfied with the way the rear wheel came out given it's a first try. Practice makes perfect and I've learned a few things giving this method a try.
Will move on to other areas of construction and continue with the front wheel later.

Yes Excellent Steer brother....
Thank you.... (it's sure a heck of a lot cheaper than Testors brand MEK as well)

Oh, it's way better than that. It's 4.19 per bottle (Tamiya thin cement) VS: 1.20 per bottle (when refilled using the Tamiya airbrush cleaner). It's less than 1/3 the cost.

Piece of cake (for you). Nice little jewel, Greg.👍

So next it paint all the struts. Fix mistakes, gloss coat, matte coat, rigging, weathering, add a aftermarket pilot. Dunk in water

Ok, so nothing lined up with most of the struts provided. Bashing required.

So I won’t back to an art shop, bought a new base, rattle canned it black. Saturated the base with white glue and added pebbles, then scratch built a jetty out of wood from my wooden ship days. My plan is to pour clear resin in then park the Macchi in it. As you. And see I’ve done up the topside of the top wing, which is gloss so I can add the decals.

Masking in the ribs. I’ll only do the topside as I intend on planting her in a resin base again

The fuselage, then the wings. I think the wings will need a few coats yet then mask in the ribs. I’ll pretty much have to paint it then throw it together which means a nice solid gloss coat when I do that.

I have these from an old build, when they get paint they’ll be perfect

There are HO (I/87) scale turnbuckles in plastic. I've used them with 10 pound monofilament fishing line. #78 drill to core the turnbuckle.

There is not much aftermarket for this genre. The engine is actually really nice just needing a few additions. Getting it to fit in its cowling is a challenge mind you. I’ve joined up the hull and it and putty and sand time

Ahh, a flying boat has been on my list for a long time, but I was rather thinking of one of the earlier Dorniers, but that would be scratchbuilding, as no kits are available.
What engine used the Macchi? I took some pictures of Italian aero-engines in the technical museum in Milan a few weeks ago.
I am not so familiar with the market, but there seems to be a lot of after-market stuff around for WW1 aircraft. However, I have the feeling that it is mainly for the 1/48 and 1/32 scales. There seem to turnbuckles and lugs in etched brass available.

Amen to that!!!
But just think abut it for a sec, same techniques just different subjects.... It keeps the brain engineering functioning...
