I finished the deck.  It was very repetitive and tedious.

I also decided to try my luck at adding the scuppers to the bulwarks.  I've scaled them off the drawing and used a small file to cut them in.  Luckily the width of the file matches the scupper size, I just had to mark the depth and file down to the line.  I'm hoping they will line up with the false frame timbers.

Now on to more repetitive and tedious work one scupper and false frame timber at a time.

    Derek,
Sometimes life interferes with modeling, which is the way it ought to be. This is not our profession.  Nibbing is certainly a learning experience and your aft deck planking looks good (better than mine did). Skills learned.

    Enjoy building.

I finally finished the planking of the fore deck.  The nibbing could have been done better but as I went along I discovered better ways of doing it and improved on my methods.  Another example of practice makes perfect you a little better.

    I started planking the quarterdeck.

I thought the nibbing (if that's what it's called) on the two outer planks turned out quite well.

I know I haven't been posting much lately but there really isn't much to add to the build.  I try to spend at least an hour a night but find it hard to spend most nights in my workroom. However I am still moving forward and making progress.  Here is the latest.

This boat is labour intensive but very satisfying.  The nibbing, I thought, was going well but the pictures don't seem to agree.  Pictures show way too much detail.  I almost have the foredeck finished then will start on the aft.  I have been trying to sand as I go which I think is a good idea.  I also have been using a scraper to remove glue residue which helps.  I have changed glues and am now using Weldbond which seems good.  The best thing about Weldbond is that it dries clear.  I liked Lepages Carpenters Glue but it always left a yellow residue.  I'm enjoying my time in the shop and have been enjoying this build albeit as much as I can spend on it.

One last note I want to mention is that I have fully converted over to scalpels.  They are so much nicer to work with over hobby knives.  Swann Morton is a really great product.

Continuing planking the deck and started with the nibbing.  Once I had a close look at it, it turns out that's it's not that difficult.  It's just hard getting clean precise cuts.  And of course it's a slow process but I'm progressing non the less.

Some of today's effort: assembling some of the Syren Ship Model Company's internally iron stropped blocks.

In the first picture you'll find, on the left, how the mini-kits arrive.

In the center/top are blocks glued together using medium CA and toothpicks (per the online instructions).

At the right are the sheave pin 'wire' and the incredibly fine strip stock used for the strops in the remaining bags.

In the center you'll see blocks snipped off the frames and also blocks which have had the sprue and laser burn sanded off.  I found using a no. 11 blade wasn't the best way to separate the blocks from the frame - it is easy for the sprue to snap off at part and remove a small chunk of the block. The shears shown worked quite well at separating the block without the damage to the block.

The second picture is a close up of the blocks.

I tried inserting the fine strip stock into the laser cut slots - they worked perfectly on the couple I tried.

I will have to wait a short while before I can tumble them to smooth the edges.

    HI everyone

Well...life's just been getting in the way lately and sadly, that's meant that I've fallen way behind in following all my MSW Friend's logs. So, Denis (Popeye), Nils (Mirabella), Cog (Carl), Steamschooner, Mark Taylor, Lawrence, Frank (Mahuna), Piet, Nenad and everyone else that I may have missed mentioning, please accept my apologies.  I will get back on track and start following your logs again, soon!

Anyhow, back onto Shadow's journey, I've continued on with her Upper Deck's accommodation; principally her VIP guest suite, a staircase that leads up to the Sun Deck, and a myriad other tiny details which are too numerous to mention.  I'll let the following photos illustrate Shadow's progress to date.

Have a great week folks and thanks for all of your comments and Likes!  Much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Hi folks

I hope you're all going well.  Meanwhile, back on Shadow's Sun Deck, I've added a bit more stuff, principally the bar that sits just aft of the spa, as well as some assorted cabinetry for the guests.  At the aft of the deck, I've added a tiny round gold coloured table, adorned by two chairs for guests to sip cocktails as Shadow sails off into the sunset.

Lastly, I've added some 'artistic' shots of Shadow; you know, just to get the imagination flowing...

I hope you enjoy the remainder of your weekends.

    Cheers

    Hi everyone

Thanks for your Likes and following along.  Greatly appreciated.

Over the past few days, I've continued to add a bit more to Shadow's Sun Deck, principally, the large white sun baking settee situated on the aft of the deck.  To add further interest, I've added some different coloured scatter cushions.  I've also started to flesh out a bit more of the detailed work surrounding her spa, situated at the forward end of the Sun Deck.

Lastly, I thought I'd take some photos of Shadow alongside photos of the real ship that Shadow is based upon (i.e. Mary Jean II). As you can see, I've got a long way to go before I can truly say that Shadow's finished.

I hope you have a great week, folks!

    Cheers

Thanks for your comments and Likes!  Much appreciated as always.

A quick update:  It seems that after a crappy day at work today, I'm now having way too much fun working on some of Shadow's deck furniture.  In particular, I've created another 12 seater table that adorns Shadow's Sun Deck, (this deck is her uppermost deck).  Also located on the Sundeck are three of those luxurious sun lounges, you know the ones in which the bikini-clad super models drape themselves over.

I hope you all have a great Friday and weekend.

    Cheers

    Hi everyone

I hope you're all doing well!  I've been working a bit more on the furniture in Shadow's Upper Deck's saloon.  Principally, Shadow now has her mini-bar set up, a small coffee table, and a small three seater settee with black cushions and two gold scatter pillows on it.  On the other side of the saloon, I've added purple/mauve cushions to the expansive settee that adorns the large screen TV sitting area.  I've also added gold patterned surfaces on the wall, just to give a bit more "mega-yacht glitz and glamour'.

I hope you enjoy these photos.

    Hi everyone!

Here's a quick update on Shadow's internal accommodation, principally the saloon at the rear of the Upper Deck.

This saloon is where the guests relax on the large settees, all the while enjoying the latest Walking Dead episodes on the big screen TV.  What a life, heh?

    Lots of fun to go.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Hi everyone

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  Back on Shadow's construction journey, I've decided to tackle her Workshop/Ship's Storeroom and Electrical Generator Rooms which are located in the focsle of the ship.  These rooms are only accessible by their respective doors in the foredeck of the ship.

To be really honest, I have no idea what these rooms look like on the real ship, because I don't have any photos. All I've got is a blurry low res lines-drawing on the plans I'm using.  But, hey, with a bit of imagination, I've managed to hobble something together that looks reasonably convincing..well I hope so, anyway!

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Hi folks

Thanks for all of your comments and Likes!  I'm glad that you're enjoying Shadow's journey!

I've almost finished the construction of the Owner's Stateroom.  As you can see, the king sized bed now has a mattress, an assortment of pillows and a throw rug casually draped over the foot of the bed.  Adjoining the bed are two arm chairs with a small wall-unit in the centre.  Off to one side of the room, the three seater settee now has cushions and some scatter pillows; whilst directly in front of the settee is a metallic gold coloured coffee table.  On the other side is situated the office desk, accompanied by it's own office chair.

All in all, I reckon it's all coming together really nicely.

I hope you enjoy these photos.

    Hi everyone

I'm having lots of fun whilst outfitting Shadow's Owner's Stateroom.  In the latest photos you'll see that I've added a few more items of furniture, including two arm chairs situated at the foot of the bed as well as a writing desk to one side of the room.  On the other side, there is another double seat sofa.

I know everything looks very rough and temporary at the moment, but I've yet to glue things in and clean it all up.  All in due time, I guess...

I hope you all enjoy Shadow's progress.

    Hi folks

Hope you're all going really well.  A very quick update for you, once again.  I'm still working on the Owner's Stateroom; principally, I've added the two bedside tables and the bedside lamps (they're the rectangular white lampshades, in case you were wondering).

Also, as in the full sized ship, I've added the two large potted shrubs which adorn the bulkhead.  These are a bit hard to see, but, please trust me, they're there...you may just need to look really close!

    Have a great week, everyone!

    Hi folks

Just another quick update for you.  I've started to fit-out the Owner's cabin.  In doing so, I've commenced work on the major wall-units which adorn the port and starboard sides of the aft bulkhead.  I've provided a couple of photos of these units in my hand, just to give you a clearer idea of what they look like.

On the forward bulkhead of the Owner's cabin, I've added the wall panelling as well a blue painting with yellow stars on it.  I've also mocked up the owner's king sized bed and some assorted furniture surrounding it.

Still lots of fun to go.

Thanks and have a great week!

    Hi Folks

Thanks for all of your likes and comments.  Much appreciated!

Another quick update.  I've been working on the Entrance Lobby on the Main Deck.  The Lobby is positioned directly forward of the Main Saloon and is where the guests would embark and disembark from the ship when dockside.

In true mega-yacht style, I've decided to go for the glitzy "wow" appearance.  In doing so, the walls of the Lobby have been lined with gold and silver bands (the silver bands would actually be mirrors in the real ship).  Unfortunately, my poor macro-photography skills means that it's really hard to see the actual effect, but, well, trust me it, it looks ok.  I've also adorned the walls with some cabinetry and wall units for guests to rest their 'what-nots' on.

    Having heaps of fun here...

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

    Hi Folks!

Just a very quick update for you all.  I've added a bit more detail to the Main Saloon; namely the side cabinets and two small single armchairs that are situated at the rear of the saloon.  And...just to add a bit of life to the scene, I've deliberately placed the dining table chairs in a haphazard fashion, just to give the impression of the guests leaving the table in a hurry.  Maybe it was something they ate???

Also,if you look closely enough, in one of the photos you'll notice that I've added the individual placemats on the saloon table.

They're admittedly hard to see because they're so tiny, but trust me, they're there!

    Cheers

    Patrick
