    Hi, all...

After a relax months, I've continued with the Mediator. The things I made are:
    - gun ports
    - sweep ports
    - waterways
    - spirketting

In addition, I made the plans for spars an mast. They are virtually the same of the Armed Virgina Sloop of Model Shipways, adapting sizes. I will not to include these plans to public release due to copyright restrictions.

I decided to test some ideas for the wales so I took a scrap piece of oak and used india ink on a portion thinned paint on another and Sharpie marker on the last. Out of the the three I like the Sharpie the most but am afraid that it might rub off while handling the model.

PS. Here is a picture of my new, safer rasping setup for the planks.

    Port Side Paint: (37:00 hours)

When done with the planking I proceeded to stain the wood above the waterline and paint it white below the waterline. I still need to do some touching up on the color. Question: Should I paint the wales with thinned black paint or leave them natural? or even dye them with India ink?

I have started on the lower planking and am moving from the wale down. I am trying to use the least number of drop planks and stealers as per Chucks videos.

The quarterdeck molding strip and the two planks above it have been made. The cabin roof may need to be made a little taller to accommodate the next molding and one more strake.

    Gunport Stripe (22:00 hours)

I have installed the three strakes of planking above the wale, there's not much to say here except that there was a lot of gluing, clamping and waiting for glue to dry.

    making the keel: (12:00 Hours)

The keel is done. I made the keel from cherry and the false keel from oak. Most the cutting was done on the bandsaw, I used the drum sander in the drillpress to sand the pieces right up to the lines then used a file to make the joints fit perfectly. I simulated calking by rubbing pencil on the inside of the joints prier to gluing. The entire keel was glued in place so that planking can commence.

    Fairing the Bulkheads: (4.00 hours)

The fairing was done with a sanding drum on my Dremel rotary tool and I just beveled the bulkheads using the lines on the plans as a guide then used a strip of heavy card to check fairness and was pleasantly surprised that it ran flat against all the bulkheads the first time acting as a testament to the quality of the plans. There are still a few spots that need touchups but that shouldn't take long.

    Cutting the Bulkheads: (3.00 hours)

The plans (sheets 4-15) where printed then glued to a sheet of 1/4 inch Birch plywood which I then proceeded to cut on the bandsaw. As the plans were made for 5mm ply I had to cut the slots in the bulkheads a bit wider then they where men't to be, needless to say this took a bit of practice to get right so some fit a little loose and had to be shimmed with card stock.

I kept telling myself that I should finish a model model before starting a new one but I just couldn't resist and started on the Mediator. The model is built using plans from carlosgf and will serve as a practice run for a 1:20 scale radio controled version that I will start on after I finish my Byzantium.

My idea was to make a plank-on-bulkhead ship model. The bulkheads and false keel were designed with Autocad. The drawings of Chapelle needed a lot of correctios because the small size of the drawing in the book, distortions of the paper, etc...

I put the plans in the first post and I will to update them if any change occurs. Please, feel free to use them, if You are interested in this model.

    Some points:
    - The bulkhead and false keel are designed to have a thickness of 5 mm (5 millimeters).
    - Under the tramson, there is a rounded stern. I'v seem models wirh plain (square) stern.

    Thanks for your coments!!!

The planking of the hull begins with the wale. The main wale (the lower wale) dominates the position of the planking. I put strakes alternatively up and down, joinning in the center.

In the forum you can find manuals of how to make the planking of the hull. I strongly recommend you to read these manuals, The final look is better than the suggestions of some kits... and the time spent in this process is the same (more or less).

There is a reduction of distances fore an aft. The strakes should be reducted in the joining with the stem and stern. There are several methods (i've used both):
    - to reduce the width of the strakes
    - to make that a strake ends into another one or in the junction of two strakes.
