I'm just a newbie, but are you able to explain the jig you made for the tree nailing. I'm not really sure what I'm looking at

    Thanks

Just had a knock at the door, and it's like everything is coming together.

Thanks to Aussie048 and Brian C for putting me onto this device.

It came in 4 business days, and in a nice padded Australia post tough bag

This little device looks like it will come in handy. I know I could of build one, but I'm not that handy

    Cheers!

Next I took out each part of the kit, and placed them side by side.

The parts look very good quality, there is no warping that I can see, and laser cutting is pretty good I think although I'm not expert.

A box containing a multitude of tiny parts including flags, nails, cannons

I bag full of various lengths and thickness of wood planking. There are literally hundreds of them.

An overview of the precut pieces side by side. They all look immaculate and precise.

A close up of the bulkhead former

Close up of things I don't even know what they are!

Looks like a close up of some oars maybe for the miniature boats on the ship

    Boats and bulkheads

    More bulkheads

A bag with what appears to be brass rods, and some more precut stern

I next removed the hefty booklet, some rather massive plans that I haven't attempted to open as yet until I work out a way to iron them flat. The item list was there, and is dared quite recently, so I am hoping this is an updated model Chuck had mentioned in a post I read somewhere.

A high quality semi gloss ~80-90gm paper spiral bound colour manual which is 132 pages.

Some coloured templates I think in A4 and some open larger stapled. I haven't looked closely at them as yet.

I opened up the smallest plan and pinned it down with some objects to get a picture. There are many massive plans, that I'll need to work out a way of flattening and hanging them.

Now for the Grand Opening of "The Box"

I've been hanging out for this moment for over a month.

    The box front

    The side of the Box

Some close up details on the front of the box

With one quick snip of my scalpel, the sticky tape holding the box closed was opened to reveal a beautifully packaged ship.

My first impression was wow, it looks very high end, and the sweet smell of timber filled my office

Amazing work Ollie.  I've been away for a few months, and remember you starting this build.  The level of detail and your ingenuity was extremely impressive.  I see you have continued on your meticulous build.

I am still finding the time to start my first build, despite still ordering more kits!

2 toddlers, a puppy great dane, moving house, working full time, and a wife who just had surgery doesn't leave me much time.

I love the barrels. Did you end up sticking with flattened solder ?
I will definitely do this with my barrels

Very impressive, I am still considering buying this kit to start on before embarking on the other two I've just purchased.

Genius. I think I will rig up my Dremel and mitre box when I need to get a nice square edge, and use the missus dyson so I don't make a mess!

Well I've cleared up a space in my spare office where I was building an RC car, and placed the tools I've collected thus far on the desk. I have quite a few more parts on order from model expo including mini pegs, more clamps, a rope walk , and a bending wood jig from another hobby shop.

Here you can see my collection of glues, scalpels, syringes, forceps, probes, electronic micrometers, spirit levels, saws, drill bits, wood filler, tooth picks, clamps, pins, some printed documents I've found etc.

I'll let the paint cure for 24 hours and lightly sand and use a satin clear over the black  and green paints.  just on the area below the gun ports to the keel. and the transom

    Ollie,

Go to the National Maritime Museum website (the Pommy NMM); go to 'collections' and search on 'windlass'.  You'll find several photos of windlass models including a few early ones - all the ones you want are on the first couple of pages.

As for the square holes, use a square drill, of course!   I drill a small hole and then square the hole out with the tip of a very small square escapement file I have.  In case of a lack of square files small enough, try filing down a small length of steel to a square point; drill the hole; then ease the hole out to square by pushing the squared steel spike into it.  Try on a piece of scrap of the same type of wood first just to check that it works OK.

Okay, Spent another 5 hours, Finished first planking,,    And sanded and fixed any dips in shape of hull with heavy duty filler.. Would rather build up than sand off too much... Amazing how strong the hull feels now its closed up..

I have cut up some "Blackbean" (Tropical rainforest hard-wood)     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castanospermum

....To make my false keel and rudder etc..   Very happy with how it is progressing and it feels really nice running your hand along the hull..  Thank you all for your support so far..

A question while i am here, Do most of you make your rudder to be able to move? It doesn't say much in kit, but does say to drill hole through deck for tiller?  Regards Ollie

Here is an update on the barrels and served block strop. To complete the small barrels, I made a simple jig to hold the barrel, which is just a hole in a piece of basswood. The bottom of the barrel is flush with the under side of the hole, so that there is a constant distance from the bottom of the barrel to the top of the sheet. I just glued the black strips on keeping them flush to the sheet as I rotated the barrel, and of course just flipped the barrel around to do the top strip.

Here is how they came out, which is much better than when I tried to do this freehand.

Here is my first attempt at stropping the blocks with a served line. It is OK, but I think I can do better.

Some more progress. I sanded the taper into the stem then cut out the rabbet on the stem and keel. This kit made this tricky operation easier by not only providing the rabbet and bearding lines on the stem and keel pieces, but these lines were actually scored into the wood. I then just had to deepen the scores with an X-Acto blade and cut out the material between the lines with the X-Acto chisel. I used a short Emory board to clean up the slot:

BTW, that narrow chisel blade came with a knife set but I have not been able to find replacements. The standard X-Acto chisel blades are much wider. If anyone knows a source for those blades, please let me know.

When I was happy with the rabbet on both sides, I fit and glued the molds to the false keel. I used magnets to hold false keel and the molds, and Lego blocks to make sure the molds were square to the false keel. The keel assembly is just resting on the false keel for now. As per the instructions, I also made sure the tops of the molds and the false keel were flush with the table:

Any suggestions or other comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
