  1. Ok so I'm back on this, first thing to sort is something that's been bugging me since I noticed it in the photos (didn't notice it on the actual thing for some reason) the cowls the anchor chains go into (sorry dont know what they're called) are not the same distances from the hold frame. So sorted that (disguising the old hole was a pain but I dont think it notices now) Personally I think this is a great kit (I know some people say otherwise) I dont know anything about the other kit as I've not built them but I'm not too worried about accuracy so i not too bothered about whether it's the right hull lines or too wide, whatever. They give you ample material to build her (up till now since my brother stripped the planking off and I stripped all the decking off) they give you nearly enough to build her twice, i only had to buy 10 strips of decking to finish that off and have not had to buy any of the side planking and still have loads left over the quality of the materials is top notch my only slight complaint is the instructions are quite confusing (that said they give you a full size high quality photo of the finished model so you can measure and check off that)
  2. I know I'm jumping ahead a bit (well quite a lot) but I thought it might be interesting to add some of the deck furniture. I made another little jig for the covers for the hatch as there are a lot of them and they all need to be the same.
  3. I made a simple jig to keep the ribs the same distance apart and to keep them perpendicular to each other Made the cats whiskers too.
  4. Hi all did some to the stern cabin on this, I must say I'm really enjoying this.
  5. Hi all finished the planking on the bow (those little bends in the 2x2mm sapeally were a real pain in the bum, that is the 12th set of those, they kept snapping when trying to bend them) I finally managed to get the bend by soaking them in boiling water then giving them 2 mins in the microwave.
  6. Well shes got a name on her now, I feel shes looking like a ship now and with the lines on the side the proportions are looking better (I did think without them she was looking slab sided)
  7. Hi all well I'm on to the gunwale covers (why they are called that I dont know, they cover nothing have nothing to do with guns and what wale's are I've no idea) anyway I've made a jig to get all the holes in the same place. Drilled all 52 holes Gunwales installed Bit annoyed with the instructions (and myself for not checking) they tell you to drill 52 holes @ 1.5 mm but the brass wire they supply is only 1 mm
  8. Hi all planking done and varnished, made up the stand, painted the black top part and added some more to the decking structure.
  9. Finally finished the planking of the hull, luckily the top half is black so I can hide the bad bits under the paint, I'm really pleased with the bottom half though which is good since I will just be varnishing that and leaving the wood to show. I must admit its turned out far better than I hoped it would.
  10. Hi all, sooo close Shaping the planks to fit the ever narrowing spaces (scharf joints I think their called ) is a very slow job (and each one is a different shape) but it is surprisingly satisfying when they finally fit.
  11. Hi all couldn't resist a bit of varnish (just to see the beauty of the wood grain)
  12. Hi all I know I shouldn't yet but I wanted to see how she would look when sanded down so had a quick go. I know still Leeds a bit of filling in places but I'm really chuffed how it looks at the moment.
  13. Hi all got more planking done, I'm quite pleased with how the stern is turning out.
  14. Hi all got some more of the side planking done and done a bit more to the cabin.
  15. Planking of the main deck complete, I've given it a coat of clear varnish to bring out the wood grain.
  16. Hi all well the planks arrived and I was happy the colour was the same but they must have used the other 3mm because these are narrower also they are not 1mm thick either ( not that that matters much once sanded down) I managed to get a knife under a few of the stuck planks and shave some off the inner sides and squashed them together I'm hoping it will be enough so the thinness of the new planks won't notice. While I was waiting for these planks I planked some of the sides (I must say I'm quite pleased with the results. I bought a sprung pin pusher for inserting the pins, I intend to drill the holes for the pins first as the ply on the bulkheads is all split and separated from all the pins used to plank it the first time (I would have glued and clamped them but figured it would make them harder and therefore make putting the pins in harder) I think it's all starting to come together.
  17. Wow, a lot of work, she will be a beauty when done, amazing skills and patience.
  18. Hi all well this is as far as the decking can go at the moment as I've used all the wood left in the kit for this (they were very generous with wood as it was already fully planked so they nearly give you double what you need) I just hope when the new stuff comes it's similar coloured unlike the last bit (for the waterways which were completely different colours) I realise wood is a natural product so can differ I just hope it's not too much different.
