Thanks. I figured it would be a good idea to get a Phantom build log back up right away as it is popular with a lot of beginners.  I was a beginner when I built this (still am) and found other's build logs to be very helpful.

I remember reading your log when I was considering my own build. It was very inspirational and a marvelous example of taking a "simple" kit and truly making it something special with extra details like the true planked deck, just to name one thing.

great thread and beautiful build, I’m glad you posted it I am about to purchase this kit for my first build, I will also use Chucks instructions, if I may ask what kind of issues did you have with the plans/instructions that came with the kit. I read another thread that showed the templates to be way off their mark?

Gulf - The templates are not an exact match for the lines shown on the plans so stick with one or the other. I went with the templates as-is, but they could be re-drawn from the hull lines on the plans. The directions are ok, there just isn't enough detail to help the first time builder. Chuck's practicum fills in the blanks so you'll find yourself using both the practicum and directions in some areas.

WOW!! Great pictures and details.  This is my first go with a model ship.  It is going to be....uuumm...unique that's for sure.  I think I have biggered up the railing already.  Anyway, did the kit come with a rudder or did you have to construct one yourself?

It's just wood, I'm sure you can fix it or patch it up to look correct. The rudder is made up of 3 or 4 pieces of 1/8" square stock glued together. The instruction booklet has a diagram of this if my memory serves me.

I got this project to keep me busy while in Afghanistan.  Thus if I bugger something up I can't exactly run to Hobby Lobby to replace it.  MIght end up with a row boat by the time I get it done.
