This was my first attempt at model ship building. It is incomplete as the cannon were not built. I found 1:64 to be too small for me. The job was hurried because i wanted to try out all the aspects of the build to see how i liked it. I liked it a lot which is why i am about to take a very great deal of time building the AL 1:48 HMS Surprise.

The following photographs form a pictorial record of the build. Sorry....no words.

Very nice looking build!  What was your impression of the kit itself - this is one that I am contemplating for a future build.

Many thanks!

Wayne

Hello Wayne,

I found 1:72 to be too small for me to manage fine detail. I did not build the cannons and some of my rigging detail left a lot to be desired. I did not tie the ratlines, used a needle and threaded them. I found the small brass eyes etc a real problem. BUT it is a nice wee boat and deserves attention from someone with more skill than me. Give it a go.

Hi Mike, I also built the Pickle and can attest to torture that assembling those bijou carronades presented. Took some while to devise a jig to allow my failing eyesight and not so bijou fingers to cope with the operation. The model scale is 1:64 by the way.

I wouldn't feel too bad about not displaying the carronades, Lapenotiere had four of them lobbed overboard on his journey back to England when Pickle was in danger of foundering in a gale.

I agree it is a nice little model, and has all the elements of a larger build, ideal for someone starting out on a pob kit.

Hi Mike

I am part way through building PICKLE, finishing the plating! I agree the tiny carronades are a trial for my ancient  fingers, will have to devise a jig to hold the pieces whilst I struggle, I'm quite in awe of the skills I see on these forums, like your build a lot, and it is a good kit to get started on, well I hope so as it's my first attempt.

Thanks Sid but if you want to see a really good Pickle then visit Blue Ensign's build log.

Pickle was my first and only other build and I have now moved on to 1:48 scale to see if that suits my creaking faculties any better.

Good luck with your Pickle.
