Looks like your Phantom is off to a great start!  I am in the middle of my Phantom build as well and will be re-starting a build log soon.  Keep up the good work and try to be thorough because your build log will likely get used a lot by others considering there are so few on this forum now.

Well all i am back at it, I started cutting the wood for the launchways, I have decided to do that for now then get back to the ship. I have started to get ready to trim the keel, I am going to use the process that Hopefull did, by using the 1/8x1/8 wood and center it and use it as a guide to fair the keel.

I do have a question, for a 1/8 x 1/8 piece of wood 12 inches long how long do i have to soak it so i can bend it so it will sit on the keel

Hi Scott

It depends very much what the wood is I think

Something like Lime takes very little time at all and even a few minutes soaking in hottish water will enable shaping

A hardwood however will take a lot longer to soften, maybe several hours

Just keep taking it out and have a feel   

Remember softwood will swell and soften quite a bit and then shrink back as it dries, so keep that in mind and also treat the wood gently

Prepare it before soaking as it does not sand well at all when soaked

now i am going to thin the keel, sure seems like a lot of wood to remove i will do the stern and the keel then use the same set up for the bow or at leaset thats the plan

Well basswood is fairly soft and malleable so should not take too long

Used American walnut and cedar mix stain

When I want just a bit of protection without it really showing I have a can of spray satin lacquer

That does the job very well and with a steady hand you can put a couple of coats on without it really showing

Im still slimming the keel, ive noticed on the stern i cant find anywhere that shows how far down you trim and on the sides around midship how far out do you trim down

i can see on the midship area that it looks to be at the right witdth

any in put would be great thanks

does anyone have a pic of thier phantom after the keel has been thinned down, but i would like to see the pic without the false keel on it. i am almost done with the keel but i dont kow how far out and down to thin to 1/8th

Or if you do, do they not show what you want to see

I can be of no help as I haven't a clue

All I can do is compliment you on how well the build is going

I unfortunately don't have any pics that will help visually,  but the easiest way to figure it out is...

 

Find the centerline of the keel and draw a light line the length of the keel.

Measure 1/16" to either side of that line and mark that the length (so now you have 3 lines).

The two outer lines are where you want to bring the keel in to give you the 1/8".

When shaping it you just want to bring it in and then up a little (to keep the keel) and then blend it back into the shape of the hull itself.

I found that following the templates turns out a nice shape.  The templates for amid ship pretty much don't have you thin that area down at all, maybe 1mm to 2mm (just guessing there).  Once you get to the area of the hull leading to the sternpost area, that is where you begin to thin down to the 1/8" thickness pretty far.  Here are some pics to show what I mean.

 

Here is a photo of the thinned keel from the bow before the false keel was installed.

 

 

And from the stern.  You can see here that the thinned area extends down much further at this end of the hull.

 

 

Now here is one from the side showing the sternpost area where the thinned part extends down.

 

 

Now one with the hull being coppered.  the first plate on the bottom covers the false keel, then you can see where the thinning ends on the second plate.

 

 

Here you can see that even if your shaping of the hull is not perfect, the results after you copper can still look nice.  Don't mind the waterline on this side of the ship haha.

thanks thats what i needed i tried reading the lines on the plans but couldnt get it right i just needed a reference to see how fat the 1/8th trim extended from the false keel

im almost done with the keel

so I have the keel trimmed and I have the markings to get the hull fared helps when you follow the directions lol

I also used a laser that Alexey i think used and it works great

now I am ready to fare the hull

Are you supposed to wear some kind of glasses when using lasers
