HMB Endeavour by Micklen32 - OcCre - 1:54

Evening all

Hi Steve

I tend to make use of a nice little hammer that I own to ensure the pins are at least level with the surface, if not slightly indented

As I said I do tend to rely quite a bit on a rough filling

I am just at that stage of my build now

Today I have finished the first planking

Given it a rough coat of filler where needed

And filled the bits in the bow and stern with parts provided to do so

post-3712-0-25674700-1374333871_thumb.jpgpost-3712-0-83262000-1374333876_thumb.jpg

Got the hard work to come now

All the cutting and sanding of the hull and the infills of balsa and ply

Need to take a bit of care as well as the pin pushing did not do my arthritis any good at all  :(

Anyway I will see how much I can get on with tomorrow

I am expecting soon to have to give this a rest as the parts for the Taxi should arrive soon and I want to finish that

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Mick

Hi Mick,

You give us ( Adriaan and myself ) a nice answer…... :D

If I understand it correctly, you place the balsa blocks into the bow, shape it and then you put the second planking over it?

I have the same thing with my Smit Rotterdam but in have to plank it also with the first planking.

It's the same what we are doing with almost all the builds.

Just put balsa blocks at the stern and bow to make the planking easier.

But if your manual are saying that you have to do it this way, oke then...

Yes Sjors

The blocks of balsa are in the kit for the bow and the ply shapes to fill the stern

Glue them in and cut and sand to shape then put the finish straight on to that

Therefore the finish on them has to be good to take the 0.6mm strips directly

I will take a fair bit of time on this stage to make sure the finish goes on easily

I would be interested what you and the Endeavour builders think of my colour choice

I have got Caldercraft Admiralty French Blue for the top of the hull

Admiralty Dull Black for the black rubbing strakes and for the bit between the two that OcCre call "yellow/orange" stain I have decided to use the Admiralty Cherry stain that should look very nice

I hope

Keep it up :10_1_10:

Hello Mick,

Nice job with the planking.

Have fun with the sanding.

I've never used paint before, but Admiralty paint has nice colors.

Can you show us the colors and the stain?

Thanks!

Hi Anja

Here is a link so you can see swatches of the paints  http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/admiralty_paints_water.html

Unfortunately they do not show the stains

I am hoping the stain is similar to the cherry wood I used to use when I made pens

Hi Mick,

I used the French blue on the San Ildefonso and the dull black.

There both beautiful colours.

I just love the admiralty paint.

The cherry color I don't know but I gonna take a look at the link you gave us.

I have take a look but I only see a bottle…...

After the experience I have with the paint, I think you make a good choice to use it.

And thanks for the explanation about the bow.

I'll wait to see what you are doing with it.

Thanks for the links Mick.

You can't see much of the color when they put their stains in a plastic bottle.

Anja

No it is a pain that they give you nice swatches of the paint but not the stain

I am hoping it will be fairly light like that link to the wood sample

The colour on the Endeavour is a wierd one and it doesn't help OcCre calling it 'Yellow/Orange'

I couldn't find a stain like it but they have one in the ' Build the Endeavour ' as it is on the video of the build

http://www.build-endeavour.com/en/guide.html#

That may have been made up specially for the build though

Hello Mick,

'Build the Endeavour' is an awesome video.

Especiallly the introduction.

Thank you!

Anja

Isn't it just  :)

I just wish it went a bit more deeply into the masts and sails as the instructions on my kit stop at masts and sails and life size plans take over  :o

I am schooling myself here by having at least ten minutes a day staring at them and slowly getting it together  B)

They are quite complicated things and when I get to actually fitting the sails I hope someone might be able to guide me a bit there as it's something I have never done  :piratebo5:

At the moment my build is drying as I had a major fill at the stern

After taking a good look at what I had and the photos in the instructions it came to me that the stern looked more like it needed filliong rather than sanding off and so it proved

The bow came up nicely and I am now sitting watching The Open golf on tenterhooks hoping it dries nicely  :piratetongueor4:

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Hello Mick,

I'm glad the bow came out good.

When you get to the point of masting and making sails, I'm sure someone will guide you through it.

And have a look as well in the Ship Modeling Tips, Techniques and Research → Masting, rigging and sails.

Maybe you will find some tips there.

Enjoy watching the Open Golf.

I know a lot of the day was spent waiting for filler to dry...But

It was a really hard day

The stern was really wierd

Comparing it to the photos in the instructions it didn't look right at all

The parts looked totally different and it looked as if it needed filling not sanding

Here it is rough finished

Compare it to the stern view in the last log post

post-3712-0-90230300-1374429011_thumb.jpg

When you look carefully yuo can see that it needed filling so that is what I did

The bow as you could see was a big saw and sand job and that came out very well

post-3712-0-30497300-1374429088_thumb.jpg

There is still a bit of work I think to get it perfect for final planking

post-3712-0-36996800-1374429179_thumb.jpg

A bit of sanding here and there and maybe a little bit of filler to get it spot on

But I think the hull's nearly there

I do hope the parts for the Taxi come soon so that can be finished and clear the table and toolbox

Right

Question of the day

I am going to use masking tape and stain the hull direct

But

The black rubbing strakes

Paint them first and then fit?????????????????????????????????

I am presuming that is the best bet but please give me your views

Thanks

Hi Mick,

You ask some advise…...

Here is mine  :D

When you paint it first and then put them on, you have the change that your paint is going away by the glue.

So, first place the rubbing strakes, then use tape and paint it.

You can do that before you finish above and under the hull or do it first and then you have the change that you do a little fiddly work when the hull is finished.

That's up to you.

And use tamya tape, you have different sizes in that.

Ok Sjors

Thank you

I was just looking at the instructions and thinking they had it right

I didn't think of the glue interacting with the paint

You have a very good point

Hi Mick,

This is what I do all the time.

The little boat is now planked and I have to place a rubbing strake.

I will do that first and then paint the whole thing ( or dingy )

Hi Mick

Its best if you stain/paint the planks after fitting them, no matter how good you fit them they will still need to be sanded. Once sanded, stain the planks a colour you think looks right, it doesn't have to be the orange/yellow colour the instructions say. (Don't get me started about the instructions for this model) then mark out where the upper rubbing strake goes with a pencil and paint above it with blue paint. Sand smooth and paint the strake before fitting then when fitted it will cover the boundary between the stained planks and the planks painted blue, no need for masking tape. Fit the main wale, sand smooth and then paint black, you will need to use masking tape when painting the main wale.

Hope this helps

Steve

Afternoon all

Especially Bankie

Late start today as I had to nip to hospital for my diabetes eye screening

When I got back the paints had arrived so I thought at least Bankie may be interested on what they look like

The paints are the Caldercraft Admiralty series WATER based

We have French Blue - Dull Black - Walnut stain - Cherry stain

The top of the two is two coats and the bottom one coat

The first photo is taken in natural light, the second with flash

The photos were then cropped in Photoshop and given auto tone and auto contrast that I do with all my photos

All the colours look perfect I think

I will definitely use the walnut for the yards

And I am very happy with the cherry as I think that will stand well for the "Yellow/Orange"

It will give you an idea what they look like as well Bankie

I hope it helps

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Great Rob

They are very good quality I can tell you that

Today my Taxi parts arrived so tomorrow I will get back to work on that and get it finished

My mother in law has apparently put her name down for that  B)

But I did do some work on the Endeavour

I started the final planking

I have to admit I am finding it difficult

The Spirit went very easy and I don't remember the Racehorse or the Thermopylae being this difficult

I thought I had it fairly smooth but I am coming up against slight problems but hopefully everything will look good with a light sanding

I tried the cherry stain on a bit of the stern and I thought it looked real good but I won't really know until I do the lot

Here's what it looks like anyway

Not sure how long it will take to finish the taxi

When I have finished it I will stick a photo of it on here if no-one minds so you can see what I was up to

It will be days rather than hours I would guess, but you never now

Mick,

Is this the second planking?

If so, be careful at the bow.

You can see the difference from the hull to the bow ( I mean where you put on that block.

And on the port side of the bow, you use some filler?

And are you gonna give the hull a varnish or a stain layer ?

Perhaps sanding will take that away.

For the stern, I think that you have to put 2 or 3 layers on it.

Now you can look 'thru'' the stain.

You are doing a great job on the planking.

And when your taxi is finished, I want to see a picture of that!

Hi Sjors

Can you explain 'Be careful at the bow' and the sentence after please

Yes it is the second planking

It has three sections

Where I am now has the cherry stain, just below the gunwales for three or so planks is French Blue and underneath the cherry the strips are Sapelli and varnished or polished

I have been using contact adhesive and I am afraid I am a bit messy so sanding will be necessary I am afraid

As to filler there is a fair bit all over the first layer to get it as level as I could and it still wasn't good enough IMO

I checked it all round with a strip and it seemed good until I had a few strips on

Hopefully it will look good when finished

Hi Mick,

What i mean is the first picture.

You see the line where you go from the hull to the bow.

The part where you put the blocks into the bow.

When you magnify the picture, you can see it clearly.

For the rest, I'll wait for the result  :D  :D

Keep on going this way.

Hi Mick

Just taking in your log for the first time. Sjors is right you are heading for some stormy seas on the second planking with that base and set out. For one, I'd be seriously worried about the big step at the stern that you have created and it is not too late to sand it off - very heavily. Put a plank on about three planks down from where you are now and you should see the difficulty that is about to arise. The Endeavour is a really tough planking proposition - bluff bow and stern. Have a look at other Endeavour logs but I'd recommend some major background adjustments before continuing with the second layer of planks.

Just my thoughts. Keep it up!

Cheers

Alistair

I am having a day or three off to finish the Taxi

When I have done that I will return to the Endeavour and see what problems I come up against

Thanks for the warnings
