Absolutely superb. I am planning a half hull model of the brig Port Antonio shortly so I have followed your build with great interest. If you were intending all along to paint the upper hull black, why the two kinds of wood? 

 

I do think that the black hull and that simple but so elegant gold stripe set the shape off just right

Tim I just noticed the very nice matching of the wood grain on the back board it fits perfectly with the shape of the hull, almost looks like a cross section of the water flow. it makes the whole presentation that much better.

I used Basswood because it's cheap and I knew it would be painted, I just happen to like Mahagony and decided to leave it that way, I feel it gives it a better look than the red hull.

I happend to notice the grain structure when I was selecting the wood to cutt for the backboard, I happy someone else noticed the same feature I did, you have a good eye!  :)
