Name the Ship Game

RMS Olympic

Hi Jason,

Is it HMVS Cerberus?

Based on the 'tenuous connection' I have changed my guess to HMS Glatton?

As I believe wolverines are also referred to as gluttons

Jan - you're correct, its British - hoped the flag would give you that :)

Slog - Not HMS Glatton, but close.  This ship was lauched in the same year, and she was bore the same name as her small class. (you'll notice this ship has two turrets, I believe Glatton only had one).

Cheers,

Jason

Negative Nigel, but nice try!  B)  - name connection is to Dave's ship HMS Wolverine...there aren't that many monitors so with the clues given should be easy to narrow down...

  1. Monitor
  2. Launched in 1871
  3. Her name is the same as her class

Cheers,

Jason

Aaah, Nigel, you were faster than me!

I was just trying to write here about the same thing when the site said "there are two more answers to show"....

if she's not the HMS Glatton then she must be one of the Cyclops class of 1870:

HMS Cyclops,

HMS Gorgon,

HMS Hecate,

HMS Hydra.

Later edit: With the last clue "name the same as her class" that makes:  HMS Cyclops!

So congratulations Nigel, seems you got her!

Dang I think I found her... :(  am reluctant to answer as it might mean my turn next... ^_^

Here Goes.. The Dredger Esk !

I found some photos very similar to the boat in your photos in her 'glory days' with the Grab up front and nicely painted (there was an RC model of her too, now I've just spotted her on a cover of Model Boat Magazine !!)  Fingers crossed that I'm wrong

Found her by typing 'Small Old Grab Dredgers' into Google and trawling through the results for something similar in shape..

Give me about 15 mins to put up another !

All righty then.. here's something.. I can't guarantee it hasn't been used before as her Number was already erased in this photo, (my original photo of this scene was way too small to be of use so I had to find a larger one ! and this is it)

There is one pretty big hint in the photo.. massive in fact ^_^  but I thought she was an interesting looking vessel with an odd forward gun arrangement.

Either her name in the photo or her previous name will be ok..

All The Best

Not Gib, at least I think it isn't Gib ! but there is one other rock that is iconic.. and that will give the nationality (that's what makes me feel it isn't Gib)

The Belgrano isn't soo far away.. (in at least 2 respects) Wrong Nationality but  I think they came from the same original Stable! Have another go , you are sooo close!

Must be the Brazilian navy's Barasso, ex-USS Philadelphia.

BTW - Eamonn, how on earth did you get that dredger, was expecting that to sit for weeks!

Cheers,

Jason

I think Belgrano,ex USS Pheonix was Brooklyn class.Several were sold to South American countries post war, some to Brazil and one to Chile?Rock has to be Rio de Janeiro, but from an odd angle.

That's the Bunny Jason   and being Brazilian I'm thinking the Rock must be Rio and the Sugarloaf.. she is a sister to Belgrano (I was very tempted to give it to Nigel on that alone)

it was the rear pointing 3rd forward turret that caught my attention!

I got Nigels from  seeing she was a dredger then Googling Dredgers...  then Old Dredgers.. then Small Old Grab Dredgers (after realising she was a Grab Dredger) she was a lovely old thing.

Take it away Jason..

Sorry Nigel, feel like a bit of a stinker  ;)

The biggest surprise here is that I got it without seeing your clues Eamonn (had just been watching a classic Bond movie with my son, expecting to hear crickets chirping on the dredger photo but checked in anyway!)

Anyway, here goes.....so we've had a Wolverine and Cyclops so far...

You got it Nigel, your go.

Eamonn - actually not that much, but think its nice to have a little something else to go on if the ship is not overly distinctive.  Of course we've had Euphrates, Arklow (x) etc.  :)
