I'd have to see the original wording to be sure, but the rake of the after face of the post was a matter of hull design (influencing the run of the planking) whereas the gradient of the inner face was only of structural concern. Even then, the post was only one part of a complex structure involving deadwood, possibly keelson, likely a large standing knee, maybe an inner post and so on. It would make much more sense to quote a single value for the rake if that referred to the after, outer face.

Rudders could (and did) function perfectly well on raked posts. Indeed, even a post erected perpendicular to the keel was likely to be raked once the vessel was trimmed for sailing, with the heel slightly deeper than the forefoot.

@Kenchington,Trevor here's the exact section of the Staghound article which includes the exact specs supplied to Duncan McLean by McKay's Shipyard. I've also included a close up detail of the stern on McKay's twin packets sketch which shows how the aft stern is thicker below than above.

Thanks for all the input Rich...and from everyone else who has contributed to the lively exchange as of late.

I'll spend some time today finalizing the shape of the bow and stern...probably more filling and sanding.  I'll, then primer the hull to expose further inconsistencies, that will most likely require filling and sanding.

Once all that is done, and I'm satisfied......I'll affix the stem/cutwater and keel to include the stern post.   I move fast...but not too fast.  I want this as correct as I can manage.  Monkey rail will come after I lay the sub floors for the decking.

@rwiederrich Rob, your Staghound is shaping up beautifully. I hope this reminder isn't too late for your build. The keel was described as being built in two sections, was 46" deep, with 36" projecting beyond her hull making the internal portion just a thin 10" deep in the McLean article. However, in the Cornelius McKay letter in addition to bottom planking being 4" and wales 5" thick he stipulated (excerpt attached) that the keel section beyond the hull was just 30" deep making the other portion of keel inside a more sensible 16 thick."

Yep...it is 3ft...or 2.5 scale ft.   Does that number include the *false* keel as well?

Rob, I read Cornelius' instructions to mean, in order to get a more complete version of Staghound as he carved her, add 4" outside planking, 5" wales and a 30" keel (implied but not stated with false keel or shoe) all at his 1:48th scale.

I gathered that as well.  I'm in the ball park then.  Just asking.  Plotting out the main rail cap and the 16" monkey rail.  Inside will be the waterways and planksheer.  I'll place the cap rail first, then the exterior planksheer.  The Navel hood will go on first before that install.   But before all that....I still need to finalize the stern.

Rich...recalculating my measurements...Her bulwarks are 6.5ft including the monkey rail.  That means her main rail is at a height of 5.1ft where her poop and forecastle decking are located.  Correct?

Her planksheer sits atop her 12" waterways.  I'm assuming her main rail is measured from the deck, not on top of the waterway?  I am finalizing all these measurements so I can calculate the placement of the external planksheer Moulding, which is be 6" thick and 16" wide.  Same size as the rail cap.   fun, fun, fun...

Rob, Staghound bulkhead height, including monkey rail was 6'6" from the deck. Main rail height was either 5' with an 18" monkey rail or 5'2" with a 16" monkey rail. While it's not specified on this vessel, other McKay clippers had a 5'2" main rail height with 16" monkey rail. On Glory of the Seas the outer sheer rail molding was about 1' shorter than the internal main rail height. For a 5'2" main rail the outer sheerline would be about 4'.

Rob,

At this scale, your staghound's starting to look more like a chihuahua 😉 Either your navel hoods are too large or figurehead's too tiny. I'm resharing my sketch to aid in your scale evaluation. The staghound figurehead is 90" (7 & 1/2' like the Athene figurehead. Like her, the naval hoods terminate around the dog's front shoulders. The sketch is done to 1:96th scale with 8' verticle lines. I traced the Alexander Hall plans, which besides her bow profile was just about spot on. You can use the scale on that print as a guideline, as my trace was exactly the same.

Rob, my bad. I misunderstood your picture, which made the figurehead look ridiculously small. The svelte hull of your Staghound is really beautiful and demonstrates Donald McKay's extreme California clipper true to form. It's so exciting to see you back at work on her.

Recalculating it looks like Vlad placed the masts in the incorrect location.  I noticed it when placing the portico.  It was off by 8 scale ft.  The foremast began too far back from the stem.  Everything was off by 8ft.
Some images to show. The black dot is the correct location.
