Finished my first build - OcCre Bounty Launch – photo to follow, after I build a display stand – anyone know of any basic plans?

The question I have for members is; What next?

Would really appreciate what people consider appropriate as a 2nd build?

Thank you.

I'd recommend a Vanguard Model. The Sherbourne is highly recommended. There are also the "fishing boats" - I've done the Ranger, now doing the Zulu 'Lady Isabella', have the Erycina on the shelf. Of course there are more complex Vanguard models, but I'd imagine any of these Novice boats would still be a significant challenge with lots to learn after the Bounty Launch. And the end result looks great. The Sherbourne was my first - though in parallel I worked on the Model Shipways Shipwright boats (Dory, Pram, Smack) and the NRG Half Hull and a Lego model of the Endurance.

After the fishing boat, I'm probably going to the Vanguard Grecian. Have the Vanguard Duchess on the shelf. I bought it assuming it would be my second model. But then decided I'd have more fun learning more and trying more things with less complicated models.

On the Vanguard models, the materials are great, the design is great, the instructions are great, the end result is great - even if like me you don't really know what you're doing.

Easy to recommend.

I forgot that I had asked this very same question a year ago.

My recommendation is still the same as what I said above. You can see other responses. And how I ended up getting the Duchess, which will be a few models from now.

Hi, many thanks for all the replies which is much appreciated. Apologies for not responding sooner – dentist – enough said!

I will have a go at the Vanguard Model. The Sherbourne. The ship interests me on, a number of levels not least, continuing to build up my skill level.

I like what Vanguard say, ‘Every kit is crafted to simplify the process, guiding you step-by-step ..’

In addition, there are several ‘members build’s’ that I can refer to. This was a godsend when building the Bounty Launch.

Once again, many thanks for all your assistance and I look forward to continuing support.

You'll enjoy that kit. Cutters make very good 'step-up' projects -- they're proper men-of-war but without too much of the repetitive tasks that make larger projects a real grind to get through.

As others have said, a Vanguard kit would make a nice next kit.

I went for Sherbourne (still to be rigged), and am enjoying the Duchess of Kingston's yatch.

Off topic, do you enjoy research? If you do, and since you are in Scotland, have a dig around, see what you can learn about HMS Wickham.  There's no kit unfortunately, but I found her history interesting.

Hey there! I had this very same question a couple years back. I ended up going with the OcCre Golden Hind, and while initially I was somewhat overwhelmed (especially by the rigging plans), I was able to produce something I was proud of. We all come from very different backgrounds and skillsets, so while each recommendation may not work for another, I have no doubt you'll do great!

Current Build:

HMS Sherbourne - Vanguard Models

Completed Builds:

Polaris - OcCre

Golden Hind - OcCre

Looking forward to buying the Sherbourne & getting started. Thankfully there appears to be a significant amount of 'builds' available to help me.

Without members builds for the Bounty Launch - I would have been in deep deep trouble. Not at all impressed by OcCre's instructions.

I presume the HM Wickham you refer to is this one, 1806?

The Project Gutenberg eBook of King's Cutters and Smugglers 1700-1855, by E. Keble Chatterton

Put a search 'Wickham' to get to the page quickly.

Seems based in Campletown / Isle of Arran. This is South Scotland. I live North Scotland (Highlands).

I'll see what I can find out... but don't hold out much hope...

Keep up the good work and take care.
