I am scratch building HMS Bounty scale 1:60. Any help on how to make the open launches? Do I need temporary formers to support the planking and would they have been clinker built?

Mac,

Your boats would be best built over a former on which the ribs can be laid down and then planked.  The famous launch in which Bligh and his crew escaped was carvel built - have you researched the other boats that the Bounty carried?

Hi Malc,

If you have a look in my Victory log, starting at post #188 on pg 13:

http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/163-hms-victory-by-grant-dale-mamoli-scale-190/page-13

You will see how I tackled a 1:90 scale scratch built launch.

Hope this is of some help to you. Please PM me if you have any questions or want further advice.

Cheers,

Caldercraft do launches as extra kits in 1/64 scale - could save some work, the hulls are resin with timber details inside.

Thank guys, very helpful,Norman's idea is very tempting, but I promised myself that absolutely nothing would be purchased in finished or kit form...so masochist that I am, have to scratch build them.
