The build log begins! Dedicated to my sailor girl! Funny but I thought I would be intimidated by the abundance of parts but fortunately I am not. Wish me luck boys, I need this done by January / Feb 2015 and awaaaay we go ...

The kit makes into a great model.  My main complaint is that they very soft wood for almost everything but this can be swapped out easy enough and the instructions are easy to understand.  Have fun and enjoy.

I see what you mean Dave, very soft. Have to use a light touch! Have you are anyone else here tried a softwood hardener? Minwax makes one that is designed to re-enforce soft wood fibers. I am going to try a test on some scrap.

The secret to working with balsa is not to use it if you do not have to.  Otherwise use a sharp knife at all times.  The minute it dulls out either sharpen or replace it.  Use a wood hardener or a solution of white glue and water.  This will raise the grain but if you are cutting or shaping you do not have to worry.  I have found aspen works good as a substitute if you cannot get basswood.

So far so good! Not bad for a few hours before turning in...

Trying to figure the best way to secure the sub-deck to the bulkheads due to the slight curvature. I guessing CA is the right glue in this case.

I would use wood glue and clamps or other rubbers /tape (carefull what tape you use tho), as Ca hardens a lot faster, which lets a very small marge for error.

Soak the deck for a little while then clamp and tape it down over night.  After that check the fit.  The less stress the better.  I am partial to wood glue and 5 min epoxy myself.

Hi Sam! Did you ever finished this model?

Bought one from Ebay, unfortunately it is very incomplete , missing almost all wood parts and Sheet 2 of plans

Any chance you could help me with sheet 2 of plans?

I can buy more wood and see if I am able to cut my own parts
