  1. Hi Hugh, I'm also a retired Civil Engineer, and amazingly, I started a Flying Fish about three years ago. It was my second kit. After about a year I had to abandon the project because I had made too many mistakes on it; it was over my head as a builder. Since then,I have completed a Civil War Pilot boat and am currently working on the Mayflower and Corel's Shenandoah. These are going much better.Good luck with the "Fish" and don't worry about your age, I'm 76 and still going strong; shipbuilding is one of the fun things that keeps me going !
  2. Yes,mine are made from wood. I purchased the kit from MS about 2 years ago.

About the NRG

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model shipcraft.

The Nautical Research Guild puts on ship modeling seminars, yearly conferences, and juried competitions. We publish books on ship modeling techniques as well as our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, whose pages are full of articles by master ship modelers who show you how they build those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you what details to build.
