Hi Pete , you can either one. the regular tape just gives you a stiffer sail where the fabric tape allows more flexablilty to the sail.

   Yes i glued the seams. But since then I use two way tape cut to fit the seam. It give a straighter nice seam. I learned that from Cap'n Bob..I also still use a pencil for seams, but now I use a lighter touch to create the seams. Because if you notice on real ships of boats the seams do not really stand out that much. So for me it gives it a more realistic look to the sails..........hope this helps out

    You guys are old vets here. Remember the old Small Boat forum on 1.0.   Thats where it was at. Then they merge everything and got rid of the small boat and some how I finally found it in the scratch build forum by accident. The liitle one was my first build thread on MSW.....

I'm just adding a build thread I had on MSW 1.0. A couple of fellow modelers had asked if I was going to add it back to 2.0. I said i was but now that i am on vacation and taking time out from our spring cleaning and I won't be modeling anytome soon I thought this would be a good time to add it back.

    This was the very first time I had ever started a build log with ant type of forum what so ever. So the only thing I had saved was the pictures. I only use infomation I was able to pick up on the www. Since at that time I knew nothing of Howard Chapelle.

    So when i started this log is also the time I meet my good buddy John aka Jim Lad who encouraged me and helped me along with his experience. I purchased this kit used on ebay for a sum of 10.00 dollars american. It was started by the previous onwer of the kit. The the glue joints were glued together badly. i dismantle the evrything to start anew. Since today these work boats are now mostly used as day sailers I decided to do my best to create a boat with that theme in mind....

Please be patient with me as I add the photos. When you start a build log you just don't notice these things. But i have over 150 photos to add..........yikes!!!!  (so I might not add them all in one night)

  So here are all the pictures...and I hope you enjoy them...

I just have to say, no one bashes a kit like Mario,

That tool chest is magnificent by its self, but were they using that type of saw in that time or the springed bow saw? Also would they be allowed to take tools when dumped. The ships carpenter no doubt owned his own tools but they were stealing a HM Ship.

See all the interesting things your work makes me think about. Outstanding work, your work makes me want to build a diorama. Your Dinghy is great also with the cooler and fishing gear.

Hi Keith it's yes on both your questions. I research the type of tools in that time period. The carpenter was banished with Bligh because Christain new he was just a trouble maker as he was. And he banished him with his tools.

   Thank you all for the kind words. Ah I'll be back. Its just the thought to start from square one again. I'll get over that. As for the cat your right John, it belongs to the boss. Too bad too I decided to make frames 4 n 5 by hand using only my fret saw and files and a little sand paper. i was pretty proud how they came out to.

   you know try it the old way without the band saw, all by hand tools only. I had decided not to fit it out too. So I was almost finished. I was going to display it in a shipyard with figures...........these things happen, no big deal i will hit it again, just gotta get around the idea of starting from square one again.

   on vacation next week. have to paint bedrooms for the mrs.

      I use pencil for seams all the time. Number 2 hp.  for me I try to keep it light, not a heavy hand. because when staring and comparing i just notice that seams on sails just don't stand out very much, so i try to keep it suddle. i have Chapelles book on schooners but have not picked it up in long time. but i can if you need me to. But if i remeber right the width of a bolt of material in america is 24 or 22 inches, and that is what i go by to locate my seams. But check and verify that first Bob, its been along time since i checked, because i have been furling my sails lately..

   As for the perimiter of the sail itself I learned from Cap'n Bob to use two way tape. it helped to create a nice crisp even seam along the whole length of the sail. I use to fold over and glue but that did get a bit messy for me. there are different thicknesses of twoway tape. i hope im helping you here....

     Minor setback. I just completed the scores on frame 3aft, you know the one with the real fancy toptimber. Had it in my hand, did not notice I left the drawer open on my workbench, swung around and snap!!! Ahh! is all that came out of me, and then OH WELL, Doris Day"que sera sera"(whatever will be will be). remember that song? well back to the building of a frame tonight....

  can't take this hobby serious. If I did then I would be stressed and that is the reason i took up my modeling building hobby again. to get away from stress!!!

Pete,

Try a mix of water and white glue at 50-50.  Test it.  You might have to go down on the glue.  If use this, form the sail and then let the cloth dry.  It can add a nice billow.

 

I've also seen hairspray, starch, and matte finish (diluted) polyeurtothane varnish used.

 

Oh... and did I mention test... test.. test before putting anything on the sail?

Mark is giving good advice Pete. I scratch built a crabbing skiff and used water/white glue mix. it worked well. to also stop the fraying you can use two way tape along the perimeter which works well. heres a picture of my KRUSTY CRABB

HIde the detail?  The size of the sails for those spars will hide the whole ship!   

I agree with Mark. John maybe you should put sails, they will work double duty. Look good on the boat and keep the dust off the stag. As for your missing items, you better keep your stag close, at 1/96 they going slip that boat in their back pocket and run............haha!
