Hey Rod, great you finally made it here! First things first though. Go to the build log page. On there, near the top, you will see a topic called quick find indexes. Click on small craft and scroll down to you find the logs of the kit you are building. Some will be better than others, but everyone who starts a log on a kit is in there. This is a link from my latest build

You will definitely learn heaps here. My first piece of advice however would be, a full blown Endeavour is vastly different and way more difficult than the kit you have chosen to begin with. Anyway, enjoy mate.

    Cheers

Hi folks thanks for the site, I'm very impressed.
I'm not new to modelling, I first started as a young fella about 45 years ago, making plastic WW2 aircraft and armour.
I gave for many years while I had my career in the Royal Australian Airforce.
I've left the service and decided to take my hobby back up. I started again on WW2 armour and aircraft with the goal to get my skills up to take on a wooden tall ship. Primarily the ships that have historic importance for Australia.
I mainly work on 1:35 armour and dioramas. My skills with plastic and paint are not first rate but quite good. Friends and family are all impressed, so that's all that matters.
I've recently bought Artesinas Endeavour Long Boat and the Endeavour itself.
I'm using the long boat as a familiarisation to the concepts of wooden ship building. I hope it works out for me.
I've begun the Long boat model and completed the frame and initial decks.
I've now got to shape and round the bow and begin the planking phase. Any advice on this stage, before I stuff it up, would be great.
Anyway, wonderful to be on the site and hope to be part of great hobby group for years to come.
I hope to hear from some of you soon.

Welcome to MSW! As I'm sure you will see, that model is a favorite of many and there are several great logs both past and active on here for her. A lot of great ideas and ways to make your model a little more special. Good luck and happy modeling!

The revell conny is a favorite of mine. Amazon, among others, sell a premium wood deck you can apply. Check it out.

    Hi Scott,
Go look at the various kit builds in the kit area for weathering.  Here's the link to the index for kit builds:

The builders doing the WWI and WWII battleships seem to have mastered this. There's others doing the Conny that are masters also.

Gidday and welcome from the glorious land  Downunder.  I also have an aversion to photographs and mobile phones. I am not exactly a Luddite but am closely related.
    Good luck with your builds.

Welcome! I can empathise with your photo and cell phone. I, too, have a cell phone - somewhere in my upper dresser drawer. I am old enough to know what I need to thrive.

I'll try to clean up my disasterous work space and ask the wife to see if she can get a couple decent shots of the Notman.  It is a beautiful ship for hauling dirty coal.  Also a nice respite from building multiple dozens of canon and the rigging is not over the top difficult.  I'll take the booms and gaffs over yards anyday.

Welcome, LG! I only took one semester of o-chem in college, but I really enjoyed it. Too bad we cannot see some pictures of your Charles P. Notman, as that is a showstopper kit as well as one that doesn't get too much face time here in social media land.

    Cheers!

I am a long time lurker from Northern NY where I teach organic and medicinal chemistry.  Have been enjoying the hobby off and on for about 20 years.  The contributions from people on this forum have been invaluable to me. I have a strong aversion to photography and refuse to be bound to a cell phone so pictures are not something I can offer most of the time.  I am quite willing to answer any questions on the models I have tackled.  From MS the Niagara and Confederacy, from AL the Endeavour and from Bluejacket my current project the Notman which is done except for the rigging.

    thank you all

    Greetings,

I just joined this past weekend as result of the last printing of Ships In Scale.  A big thank you for the copy of the NRJ that was sent to SIS  subscribers.  I read the accompanying letter and plans of the Journal.  I am glad to see the commitment to beginner modelers.  I may be more intermediate...I don't know the 'qualifications' that define these categories.  However, I am sure I will benefit from associating with this group.

By profession, I am a technical trainer for an global manufacturer.  But I can see the light at the end of my career tunnel is not an oncoming train.  I plan on retiring (next year) after what will be 47 years in the work force (and for the same company).  As preparation for retirement, I decided one of my hobbies will include building models (along with gardening and 3D CGI art).  So, I have been buying models, building (IMHO) a decent library around things nautical, and learning some new skills.  (I have a few cars, a couple of military models and such in the collection, but my direction will be towards wooden ship models.)

As for my model ship history?  As a young child, my dad and I built various models (car, planes and ships).  My favorite was Revell's USS Missouri - mainly because of the impressive detail (for a 10-year-old) in that model.  I moved the completed model with the family and the model survived until my brother took one of my jet plane models and performed a kamikaze attack.  Another copy of that model is in my closet to be built again because, in part, those memories.  Also, because I toured the ship now berthed at Pearl Harbor.  (She is an impressive lady.)

I read with interest Chris' cautionary tale to beginners.  Like he points out, 'real life' (RL) got in the way of my hobbies.  As Chris' thread warns, I bit off more than I could chew (attempting a plank on frame of the Golden Hind).  I admitted to my blunder and re-evaluated my direction.  I realized I needed to learn some new skills. To that end, I have managed to complete a 'weekend kit' from Midwest (Dinghy), attended a workshop at the NC Maritime Museum (Beaufort, NC) and built a half hull (lift method - NC Shad Boat - finished and hanging on the wall). I may rephotograph those and post them to the gallery in a few weeks.

RL still curtailed my hobby though and I do have a couple other 'unfinished' models in the closet. But I have a plan and have been working towards getting into building ship models.  I look forward to associating more with the forums (and other hobbies) as retirement approaches.  And in case you didn't gather from this thread, I can be quite verbose.  But I plan to be active, so you may have to learn to get used to long posts from me.
