E.J. ,  Dave - I don't want to hijiack Elijah's thread but I have decided that after my current build I will be making eyebolts and hooks. Sounds like a good activity for when you're bored and have a little time on your hands.

Have either you made any posts on how to?  Particularly hooks?

Painting eyes isn't the easiest job, but with a good approach it's doable.

Ignore the flesh colour around the eyes at first...don't try to fit the eye in...that wont work.

    1. a horizontal line of off ivory or cream (don't use pure white).
    2. a thin vertical line of black through the centre of the eye.
    3. a very thin brown wash (will show the shape of the eye).
    4. a thin line of flesh colour above and underneath the eye...follow the shape of the eye.

With a little practise...you get the hang of it soon enough

    Robin

Thanks Mike, if you can put the blame on someone else you tend to feel better about yourself

E.J.'s recommendation about making your own eyebolts is a good one.  The Phantom kit has *just enough* eyebolts to get the job done, but if you lose or break any, you'll be making your own anyway.  Also, if you use the kit-provided rigging line, some of the ropes won't easily fit through the provided eyebolts.  I had to make a few myself due to lost/broken pieces, as well as making slightly larger ones to accommodate the rigging.  Like E.J. suggested, get an inexpensive roll of black wire and you've solved all the eyebolt issues!

I tried it on the first knight. After a few tries he ended up looking a little terrified. Think I'll skip the eyes on the knights...

Yep it sure has a lot of ornamentation
Maybe they put them all there to make the enemy feel guilty about firing cannon balls at them

    Hi Ian
Having double checked you are indeed correct, my bad interpretation of the planking rule

    Still my favorite one though

Count again though it's a 5 butt . I use 5 butt shifts because it doesn't make the deck look overloaded with joints

It's 0.6mm x 5mm Lime wood but it has a good amount of grain in it
The bottom deck is the same wood but with no visible grain to it, as the bottom deck is not visible later on i though i would plank it with some Lime i had lying about and save the grainy kit supplied stuff for later in the build

    HI EJ
I could stain it but i have found in the past that the wood does not glue as good as non stained wood. I have replaced wood in the past and almost doubled the price of the kit i was building, and not having a good supplier near me you end up replacing the replacement wood because you cannot tell what you are getting

As said, due to the tar on the ropes most eyebolts wouldn't be clean. Even ones that had non tarred rope would still be dulled, or otherwise worn and corroded over time. There are blackening solutions you can use, (I have not used them myself). Typically with brass parts that I need black I will spray a coat of black paint on them before assembly and then touch them up with a small paint brush afterwards.

The other thing I have begun doing lately is just making my own eyebolts out of black jewelry wire I bought at Hobby Lobby. It comes in many different sizes so matching your scale should be simple and one roll lasts a long time as you only use a tiny bit for each bolt. I bought 30 foot rolls for $3.50. This way I can make any shape/size I need and I don;t have to worry about painting them or the paint coming off.

Thanks John . Seem to be good kits, materials are good and so are the instructions. The only little gripe i have is that they use Lime wood instead of Walnut and tell you to paint it to look like Walnut, but as the Occre kits are fairly cheap compared to some others then it's to be expected that they are saving money to keep the cost down

I am not planning on adding any there. I will leave the final decision until after all the decks are fitted and i can see how rigid it is then

Had to use extra support because the bulkheads were still moving even with the deck in place and I wasn't going to take the chance of the joints moving once I start planking the hull

The keel and bulkheads on this kit are only 4mm thick and after fitting the deck, the joints were a little bit flimsy, so i fitted some strengthening pieces to the joints

Lower deck planked and cross beams for the next deck fitted
There was no reason to plank this deck at all as none of it will be seen later, so i used some thinner planking and saved the kit supplied planking in case i need it later in the build

Thanks for all the comments and likes, greatly appreciated
    All Bulkheads glued into place

All seems to line up length ways too

Used the straight edge on half the lower deck and marked it out for planking

Lined up the other half of the deck against it by sticking them down together with double sided tape and then transfered the markings across

Carefully removed the two halves from the double sided tape then laid a strip of planks along one edge then fitted and glued both halves to the keel and bulkheads
When it's all dried, deck planking will begin
Planks have been cut to 100mm in length and will be laid in a 5 butt system in a 13524 pattern

Not too many goodies, in fact one little niggle about the kit is most of it is Lime wood and they tell you to paint it the colour of different woods

I will take a nose through your log later to see how the kits differ
