With the help of his book Ships of American revolution, I jumped in the scratch built models.
I remember when I did it more than 30 years ago, It was very scary for me to enter in this category, there are so much details in the construction of a ship.
Harold Hahn even if he did simplified the details was a very good builder and carver too.

  3. Thanks!

JP, hope your build progresses nicely!
Just a small word of caution in that critical moment - check the alignment of the top part of your frames, next to the cutoff sections. These areas are thin, and would be very visible once the hull is flipped over. Luckily cutoff sections can be moved around a bit to compensate for it, but it needs to be done before frames are glued to the jig. Some strip of wood would help to check the alignment.
I was not so careful during that step and still see the results of that mistake..

I built a POF model of the 1812 era New York Pilot Boat Anna Maria many years ago.  I used Howard Chapelle drawings that I adapted for use with the Harold Hahn method.

It is my experience that it is not necessary to bevel sawed out frames before they are erected.  It is also much easier to bevel them after erection when the shape of the entire hull becomes apparent.  The keel, stem, and sternpost should be installed first to stabilize the structure.

Harold Hahn did not bevel frames before hand on his earliest models.  He adopted this step later as a labor saving step.

I finished the second layer planking of the hull. I applied one coat of natural stain.
It is by far not a perfect planking job. I guess practice will make perfect. One side is better than the other.
The next step is to touch up the yellow ocre and the black here and there. The final step of this hull will be one or two coat of poly.

Almost done for the deck furnitures. I only need to do the fake hinges on the companionway. Thinking about doing fake rivets for it.
Looks like I need to get a soldering iron...

In the mean time I worked on the decking. I am using boxwood.

    A few mistakes.
    - My pattern is every 4 and with the size of the deck I think every 3 would have been better.
    - I did the first few planks with a small incorrect angle and with the width of the strip of wood used I am a bit off.

I contemplated redoing everything but due to budgetany consideration I am going to have to live with it
Still learning how to properly plank....

    Small update.
Custom fitted the main rail on my AVS. The one provided by the kit was not adequate.
I cut the new rail out of 1/16 walnut and did the first stain with ink.

I have some touch up to do with the paint but I have decided to wait until I drill the sweep ports to do it.

After many mistakes, restarts, here is the build as it is now.

It is still due for a big sanding job and fixing any imperfections to obvious.

Oh and I also used black ink to stain the black section on the transom. I will use the same technic for the wales and scupper.

    Small update.

I started to work on the inner bulwark planking.
I ran into an issue with the spirketing plank not been even with the gun port. Due to the gap size in some case and the impossibility to trim on the top with the risk to be too obvious,  I trimmed the spirketing plank a little bit.
The example below is the only case where it was by a large amount. Once everything is sanded and squarred. It will look ok. Finger crossed!!

Well, it is FAR from perfect but....
Aside from a few gaps here and there, the hull is completed and closed up. What a ride and learning curse!!!
    Lessons:
    1. fairing is important, too much messed your planking
    2. Laying out the wales perfectly (critical step). I went too high on the stern of the ship which resulted in difficulty with dividing and laying the first few planks
    3. Blending and using stealer properly. On this one, I think it will come with experience.

The below pictures are without any sanding, wood filler. Just raw 'Kindergartener' work.
The starboard side is going to need some loving.
