  1. Looks good to me !

You did this from the keel to the top of the bulk heads ? If it all looks like your last pic I think you'll be happy with the final result. I didn't fair my last bulkhead very well and didn't find out till I was planking. I had to add shims during the planking stage. It wasent that hard so if their is an issue you missed theirs a good chance you can fix it. I think one of the members here has the quote " wood is forgiving" and it's very true.

  2. Daniel, thanks for the input. My name is Eric. Funny my fathers family was from Spain. Don't know where from ? At some point a long time ago his family moved to Ireland. I guess his family wasent to welcome in Ireland so they moved to the u.s.a.

The learner- were you at my house taking pictures of my scrap pile ? Just kidding of course. I'm hoping some of it can have a second chance later on in the build.

So more progress on the keel. I'm not attaching this until I know the stem is at the proper angle (thanks TFFM!). Still researching how to orient my rising wood. I may use a simple lap joint for these boards. I thought I had seen someone make the same mistake but obviously didn't pay close enought attention to it.

    Till next time ,

    Eric

  3. Pete, Randall and TJ thanks for the encouragement ! I have a good little waste pile already. I don't mind it much. When I make a mistake I try to learn, but when a mistake comes in the form of a kit supplied part, I loose my mind.

I glued the three sections of keel last night and will pin them today. I am also working on the keel/Gripe joint. I only have the initial plan supplied on the site. I assume there is a better view of both the for and aft where it begins to rise. I guess I'm wondering if the joint is a compound scarf ? Any assistance is appreciated as I have not been given permission to see the rest of the plans yet ?

I have also overlooked the fact that the rising wood is part of the keel not a separate piece. Would it be wrong if I just fabricated my own (omitting the jointery for attaching the frames), or should my scrap pile grow larger ?

  4. Scott, dremel makes a thin metal cutting disk. I used it to gently eat away the profile.

    So some progress :

I made and attached the billboards. This was actually easy. I made a photocopy of the plans and used it as a template for the curve. Edge glued boxwood vernier cut to shape. The edge glued panel in the picture is actually boxwood planking made into a panel that will be used for the gun port doors. It's the same idea so I threw it in the picture. The edge glued panel conforms to the hull seamlessly but is a little fragle until it's attached.

So this was a bit nerve wracking. I cut holes to fit the sheaves. The sheave is made from cherry using a round file and drill. I think the holes are a little big ? Don't be afraid to sound off if they look out of place

And last but not least the gun port doors. Just a handful are done but the ought id post em to get some feedback. The eyebolt where the opening rope is attached is omitted for now so I don't destroy them handealing the model.

Still pondering the decking issue. I leaning towards JPetts rope coil idea.

  5. So here is my keel so far.

Not glued up yet. Minimal sanding still needs to be done but won't do that till it's glued and pinned.

Cherry will be my primary wood for the framing. I can mill my own wood so my options for contrasting wood are open. All joints were cut with a chisel. At first I attempted using templates glued to the wood but I just ended up with hogged keel. So I cut my keel straight and cut the scarfs as close to the plans as I could. I must have messed up at least 6 keel pieces before I got my first somewhat acceptable scarf joint. I have also been messing with numerous other pieces of the keel but won't know if they will work.

I bought a copy of TFFM off amazon for $28 and that has helped a ton with this build so far. I'm assembling the build board and hope to study the rest of the plans once they become available.

I have a few other builds going so when I feel like making saw dust I will turn to the Triton.

I'm really excited to be building this ship and hope to learn a ton from you guys !

  6. Martin and JSG, the rings are for the rope to pull the port open. I'm trying to see how I could simulate a hinge. I thought a treenail size bit of material across the port strap would look like a hinge ? We will see.

Using my old exacto blades as scrapers is my way of being earth friendly since my truck gets 11 miles to the gallon and I drink bottled water constantly :-)

  7. JSG, I know I've seen all of those names before. I found that pic at work so ill track it down when I get back next week.

Due to the bump I hit with my planking I decided to start on my gun ports, molding and billboard.

For my gunport hinges in using paper soaked in CA to stiffen it. Then made some rings out of brass wire. Will blacken them and use PVA glue for the bolts on the hinges. Still experimenting on the hinge. Need a small half circle. May cut some treenails in half and paint black.

Here is my scrapers for my molding :

    post-1401-0-24917200-1388082507_thumb.jpg

I made them out of #18 xacto blades and use them in the blade holder. So far the harder the wood the cleaner the molding. Till next time

  8. J- sounds like the right thing to do. I wont lie though, I am considering leaving it but haven't made up my mind. I think it will domino as I rip out one it will damage the paper caulking on the next plank. So in the end I would be re-doing the whole deck and I have to build up the courage to do that. I know my problems began with the rudder opening being out of whack. I saw it early on and hoped the power of positivity would fix it. How wrong I was.

Onto some good news: I made a billboard out of boxwood venire and I think its going to work, the wood is thin and moves to match the curves of the hull well. I have also made my own molding. It looks great and will have to post some pictures.

Q: is the billboard painted or would it just have been left natural ? if painted what color and would it be. Black or ocher, or  matching the paint stripes. It seems to stand out on its own so I don't think it would have matched the striping.
