    Update.....

    Build log part 52

today is the day where the forward boats deck will be permanently glued on. Between brass frame and deck I use CA and  white wood glue between the lower deckhousings and the boatsdeck.
On this part I did not forget to place the connection holding points for the funnel stays. On the lower bridge its a bit tricky to get the convex deck curvature correct and adjusted to the forseen places of the nav light towers, here also used CA, hope its strong enough...

Also today a last chance to have a look into the inside of this liner, as it is now closed for ever after. Like on all my ships I put a short note (description, year of build, etc . ) into the hull before closing the last opening.

Looks nice. Looking forward to future updates. I understand you've had problems with adding photos. Maybe there's some help to find in the Q&A section?

    Working on the Pelikaan.

I started on the bullwarks and realized they are the last structural things I have to build. All the other parts have been build and now is the time to put together everything.

Untitled by Model Fishingships, on Flickr

Yesterday I glued the spraydeck on the hull (and with this the maindeck and the structure under the spraydeck which were attached to the spraydeck)

Untitled by Model Fishingships, on Flickr

After that I finished the bullwarks and the next thing is to finish (sanding etc) the hull so I can paint them.

Untitled by Model Fishingships, on Flickr

I also made the metal stands. They are attached to the hull and will be fastened to a wooden plank. It's just the structural part the finishing will follow. The pipes are hollow so I can lead electric wire through them later.

After a lengthy period of caring for the sick, lame and walking wounded - happily she's on the mend now - I am back at my work bench.  I've used some of the time sanding, designing and scheming how to make the miniature bits and pieces for this model. I want it to be as detailed and as accurate as I can manage to make it. Now I have finished sanding the hull and applied a couple of coats of thinned down water based glue to smooth out the wood grain.  It was still showing through trial paint strokes, even after the finest sanding.  Two coats of glue have smoothed the surfaces nicely and now, painted, I'm satisfied with the surface finish.

The funnel was  made from a Vitamin tablet container, cut down and keyed by sanding, then painted

The next picture is of number one hatch, not quite finished.  The coaming is 5mm high, the stiffeners are 3,5 mm high and the there's to be a coaming shelf about a millimetre wide all round.  The tarpaulin is to be cut from a redundant hammock shade as the colour and fabric are just right.  Each hatch will have locking bars across.  I should have no 1 finished in the next day or two and then there will be a picture of it and the foremast.

Thank you very much Denis, and B.E.
    for you kind comments...

the nearly midship bridge platform goes over the whole ship width and allows a good sight alongsides for the crew (and passengers).
There still needs to be the upper railing attached and the platform fitted out.
The dark grey horizontal tank with the two vents on top, is the one for daily warm water and is heated by exhaust gasexchanger of the second funnel
On the platform where the tank is standing on, there are brought in 4 interlocked eyelets with counter flat heads from below to take up some of the appropriate funnel stays safely

Also many thanks to all the "Likes"

    small update....

this little structure sits up on the boats deck between 2 nd. and 3 rd. funnel.
This is the position where the large 1 st class dining lounge is situated over several decks across the whole width of the ship, because here no stackshafts interfere with the dining area.
The half round stucture will be modeled to the light dome of the dining lounge comprising about 30 single little "glassed" frames

Had some work done on the Pelikaan. All the details under and next to the spraydeck, the fish collecting bin, the railing on the spraydeck and added the fishingline guids on the deck.

Now I want to finish the inside of the bullwark and then i will add the front piece of the ship to the hull. I have to find a solution for the electric wiring.

    Kind regards. Kees

still working on the forward boats deck and lower bridge section. There is also a lot of deck-planking involved. The little platforms above the stairs coming up from the promenade deck, are the bases for the upper stairs that go to the bridge level (not shown here yet).
Actions that lay ahead : Its also time to think of how to install and fasten the four stacks with appr. 10 ° angle. Have already ordered a 25 mm twist-Auger type wood-drill, in order to make holes for a short 25 mm glued in dowel  to slip the brass stack tubes (26 x 0,5 mm ) on to.

    Mad-man had another go ...

... and turned his attention back to the hull and its superstructures. All surfaces that would have been iron plating, will be covered in thin sheets of Pertinax. The necessary holes for portholes and other opening will be drilled or cut out before the sheets are fixed. In this way the barbette was lined with sheets of Pertinax as was the deck-house.

Deck-house covered in a thin sheet of Pertinax

The decks on the prototype were iron plate and this plating was covered in oil-paint that was mixed with sand and cement in order to provide a certain corrosion resistance and above all a better grip in wet conditions. A modelling plan drawn by Wolfgang Bohlayer shows wood on some decks, but evidence that since has become available shows that this was not the case. Also, linoleum decking apparently was never used on these boats.

    Engraving plate-lines and planking seams

As the model will show the boat in its original appearence, the plating was reproduced by engraving fine lines into thin sheets of Pertinax. All decks, including that of the barbette will covered in this way. The exception is the deck above the foc'sle that has a cover of planks, presumably to reduce wear, where the anchors were worked. This planking was laid-out in a radiant pattern, which seems to have been more resistant to the gun-blast than the more common parallel layout. The planks were also reproduced by lightly engraving the plank seams. In reality these seams would have been more or less flush with the deck, depending on the temperature and humidity, but a light engraving adds some life to the appearance.

Engraved rear-deck plating and planking for the foc’sl

To get away abit (sort of) from all that intricate micro-machining and to see something grow, I turned my attention to the skylight above the officers' quarter in the back of the boat.

Skylight above the above officers’ mess (Laverrenz)

It was, as other skylights, constructed again around a little block of Plexiglas™ that was milled to shape.

Milling to shape a small Plexiglas block

The panelling was constructed from various layers of 0.4 mm thick Pertinax. For sanding the edges square the then newly constructed micro-grinding machine came handy.

Grinding square edges on the micro-grinding machine

On the prototype the upper part of the skylight could be lifted off and the coamings of the hatch had half-round trimmings around. For this something half-round of 0.4 mm diameter was required. Short length of half-round wire was produced from lengths of 0.4 mm diameter copper wire that were stuck onto a piece of aluminium that was milled flat in situ to ensure an even thickness of the half-rounds.

    Milling half-round profiles from 0.4 mm copper-wire

    Grinding 45° bevels onto half-round 0.4 mm copper-wire

I am not absolutely happy with the result, but one has to consider that the skylight has a footprint of only 7 mm by 8 mm. Perhaps I should have another try with shop-made photo-etched parts to be designed for the purpose.

    The skylight before painting

    To be continued ...
