Asked for some samples of wood (Pear and Cherry) from the thewoodrack in the UK. Decent sized samples arrived quickly so I bit the bullet and ordered some Cherry. I preferred the colour althought it was slightly harder to work than the Pear.

Anyway pleasant enough transaction and the wood arrived promptly (ordered Friday PM, arrived Tuesday AM) and the purchased wood matched the sample.

Genarally happy (apart from the cost) but I'll let you make your own mind up about the quality because it's the first time I have used non kit wood.

Thanks Martin.  I'm using the planking pattern from TFFM vol. 2 - I agree that the taper into the fore hatch is a really nice look.  TFFM also has three rows of anchor stock planking up against the margin plank.  I'm a bit nervous about how that will come out, but if it works out, I think it's another nice touch.  Of course, once I add the cannons, small boats, etc., all this detail will be largely covered up     Aside from the planking pattern being interesting from the standpoint of having different shaped planks, another benefit is that the planks are slightly wider, leading to fewer rows than if you go with the kit's deck planking widths (I think the kit assumes a 3mm standard plank width, whereas if I remember correctly, my king plank is 6mm and the other planks I've laid so far are around 5mm or so in width).

I'll let you know about using the mill and/or table saw.  Other people on here like BE make it look very easy  I think the key is in the set up - once you've set things up, the actual milling work is probably fairly easy.  I plan on doing a few test runs on plywood, etc. to practice and get used to the mill before attempting to butcher Jeff's nice wood

Again I have no idea what happened to the post I just wrote. Here are some progress pictures of the dreaded Nelson checker.  The painting shown in the photos has not yet been touched up.  The Tamiya tape gives a very clean line between the colours and touching up is comparatively easy, and gives an almost perfect finish.

dougb reacted to hamilton in did wales ever taper at the bow?
Joking aside - would US naval practice have differed significantly from the construction methods used for merchant vessels? I would imagine the answer is yes in many areas of construction, but perhaps not in the area of the wales.....

Hi, thanks for the info on those paints.  Do you thin the Artist Acrylics with water or something else?

Good detail work Harlequin - the discerning eye will see it! Now how about putting a dot of black on the door knobs for good measure!!

I have now resolved the problem at the stern with planks "clinkering". removed offending planks and made slight alterations to the last two bulkheads and all is now well
