    Hi Group,

I've been playing around with my typical finish -3 Coats Pure Tung Oil (first one cut 50 percent by mineral spirits) and I've added Bitumen to the top coat and here are the results - thanks to Dimitry on the Russian forums for giving me this tip to age wood.  No simulated caulking added here - just wood sanded to 600 and then finish applied

This is the finish I will apply to my next build - La Jacinthe in 1/36th.  Ive added some photos to compare this new technique to my usual on Confederacy.

Your thoughts as always are appreciated,
    Chris

Great work Dave My preferred method for the bowsprit is to drill the correct size hole in a wooden block on the pillar drill  at the required angle using the tilting table. This block is then clamped solidly to the bulkhead and deck and I drill the hole through slowly using a cordless drill(lower rpm than mains power).Provided I have coated the area with thinned polyurethane,I don't get any tearing of the planking. This method however is not for the fainthearted  .

    Thank you Nigel,

I Have already missed your looking in..

I hope that followers of this build are not confused any more, its neighther the 1:48 plan nor the 1:64 kit , but one could call it the "bashed" Amati plan of the 1:64 version

Great progress Nils since my last visit Fabulous work,I do agree with others, without seeing the title,it could be perceived we were looking at a 1/48 scale model.

Took a quickey shot of the re-planking of the beakhead bulkhead after I spent most of the morning drilling out the opening for the bowsprit (finally got up the courage).
Note, the shade of the bulkhead planks appears to be a little washed out....that is due to the angle of the overhead light used to get this shot. I'm not the greatest photographer.
Any of us who have ever done this knows the challenge of getting the precise angle and hole size through the planking without damaging the deck or the bulkhead. The process can definitely get a little harry.

The second photo shows the different tools I used to begin very small and work my way up to an opening large enough to insert that 18" long drill bit and begin measuring and adjusting the angle.
Final shaping was done mostly using the rat-tail file and the small Dremel rasp bit shown.

Now, we shall move forward with the entire beakhead.

I have decided to continue on with the Corel version of the Vasa which I started about a year and a half ago.I got as far as the first planking done & set it aside while I continued working on the Sergal kit. I have fixed a couple of things so far. I re-sized the upper row of gunports as I cut them too big to start with . Also I the slant to the companionway roofs - the kit had them flat. I also re-did the lower stern to be more square. One more thing I noticed after glueing on the false deck was there were no openings for the knighthead behind the main mast or the ladder behind the fore mast so I had to make them.

    Here a Little status update.....

Those trestletree parts with their Slim dimensions looked extreme fragile to me, so I decided, for strength reasons to do them in Bamboo as well (are blackened anyhow afterwards).

After receiving the new rigging book the foremast bits have been equiped with cheekwise double-roller chucks to each post (They take the foremast lines for  jeers, clue, and Sheets.
The mast parts now are ready for attaching the appropriate blocks, shall start with the Standing rigging soon

    Question to fellow modellers....

Lennarth Petersson`s very detailed book " Rigging Period Ship Models" Shows 4 sails over the frigate`s bowsprit and jib-boom
    - fore staysail
    - fore topmast staysail
    - jib (sail)
    - flying jib (sail)
Who knows and please would kindly tell me if  all 4 of These sails on a frigate apply for the Swan Class Sloops as well or perhaps less sails...
    Many thanks....

    Hi David,

the bamboo here (4 and 5 mm rods) in the pic is natural Color, I just leave it this way and put on a varnish after shaping, You could`nt visualy tell if it is bamboo, it Looks like normal Wood afterwards

    Still doing the masting........

The Moderators must have changed the pic loadoing System, I ca`nt get my comments to the pics, will have to inform myself how to do... accordingly soon.

The lower fore- and mainmast are made frome spruce, the topmasts from  beech
The lower mizzen is beechwood und the upper mizzen is from bamboo. That was necessary to get the required strength into the fragile beams. The upmost mizzen-pole is spruce and can be slipped in and out of the socket of the underneath mast Portion.

The upper cheek areas under the top platforms  shall be blackend as well, including the upmost woolding. The platforms have gotten safety netting.

The shroud resting batten-Cages are Special and complete soft soldered from the recently made squarebands and 8 pieces of 0,8 mm brass wire. I think those shall be left in brass and not blackend

have been busy doing the lower shrouds for mizzen and main, as well as their stays.
The ratlines will be done later on. In order to get the right Tension to the shrouds is was unfortunately not possible to Keep the shroud deadeyes 100 % in horizontal line.
But I`m very happy that the alignment angles of shrouds and chainplates correspond very well to the measures I had taken with help of a dummy mast and and a string, like shown earier in this log (Kester would say "a sigh of relief" was brought out)

The Standing rigging so far is quite tight and the masts are in alignment. Shall move on to the foremast next.

I fitted some wedge protectors to the bow rail contact area of the main stay. The wooden "mouses" for the stay slings are made from bamboo rod

Deadeye tackle on the mizzenmast shrouds

its the first time I`m making use of deadeyes instead of turnbuckle shroud spanners. Having to look for the right thread diam. in relation to the deadeye sheaveholes, so the rearside counterknot at the beginning  does not rush through the the predrilled hole when tightening the tackle.

The deadeye spacing distance is made repeatable by using spacer two easy removeable clamps after the zeising is put on the upper deadeye shroud cords

If you think that is a great price, check out this link to Oakridge Hobbies, which is where I purchased the Victory from and they have the Artesania Latina HMS Surprise for the same price I paid for the Victory kit @ $567.00. Also at that time they offered free shipping so I don't know if that still applies or not. http://www.oakridgehobbies.com/hobby-shop/plastic-wood-hobby-model-kits/artesania-latina-tall-ships-models-wooden-boat-models-wooden-ship-model-kits/artesania-latina-h-m-s-surprise-1796-wooden-ship-model-kit.html

Thanks guys! That extra cash could buy a Byrne's table saw and/or thickness sander . I will say that sounds a little concerning not having paper plans?!

This is the scale I'm really interested in and of course the HMS Surprise is one of my favorite

    Hi Bill
They are both exactly the same!!! HMS Surprise was never offered as a proper weekly partwork in the UK,so I very much doubt it will be any different for the US.Save yourself a heap of cash my friend and go with Age of Sail.Only downside to both depending on your opinion,no paper plans, the model only comes with an instructional CD for the computer. However the kit can be built into both a large and well detailed model.

    Hi Grant,
    I appreciate your kind words.

... and so it goes on:
The reinforcement (flat iron) for the supporting knee I made out of brass sheet 0.2 mm.
The support of the channel (round iron bars) was made of brass wire with a diameter of 0.9 mm.

The second attempt for a support for the channel can be seen in the picture. This is made of a round brass bar having a diameter of 1.5 mm. This is too massive, unrealistic.

In the next step, these pieces are browned and then mounted.

    Hello,

the question relating to the mounting of the gun port lids I could now finally clarify with the help of a forum colleagues.
In the painting of Horace Vernet is clearly at the bottom gun port lid a hook recognizable as such (yellow arrow).

Furthermore, in the Monograph La Creole 1827 by J. Boudriot on page 96 can be found, that the upper lid with 4 hooks has been fixed.

So there were a total of six hooks for attachment to a gun port.
This was implemented by me immediately at the battle station.

In addition, 48 hook with eyelet for the model I have to make.
