NMBROOK reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
The deck in the central part of the ship is covered by tapes from plastic foils, that I use on all my card models to imitate wooden look..

The inner parts of the model are already covered with a second layer of carton and bases for the upper decks.

I have also a handsome helper who makes me a companion during model-builing.

And here I have started with lower deck and center part reinforcement. The hull  -
although it is made of cardboard - is very solid and heavy - it weights more than 3 kg.

    Dear friends,
I appreciate your kind words a lot and advice. Thank you very much. That is a great honour for me. I have to say I was thinking about HMS Royal Katherine for a long  time. Finally I have found the courage to start this large project and would like to share it with you...
Here you can see the complete stern of the model, some gunports and other details on the hull were changed to be more accurate and corresponding to the position in the painting of the real ship.

    Hull construction
All parts are made of card and glued together to the appropriate thickness.
The shapes of bulkheads are based on HMS Sussex's plans, but I found there many inaccuracies and mistakes!!

So it was necessary to modify proportions and make correction. Other parts of the hull are taken from plans HMS Prince.

    Hello everyone,
a few years ago, I finished my most beautiful ship - Sovereign of the Seas and I wished to find another similarly beautiful sailing ship which I would be able to build. There are plenty of glorious boats, but only for a few of them there are avalialbe good plans and exact information. I decided to create and build a card model of Royal Katherine from 1664. I do not have exact plans so I will proceed according to other plans of ships from 17th century - HMS Sussex and HMS Prince and use information from professional literature as well. I like great challenges and connection of fun and education, so I am looking forward to this project very much. The model will be created in the scale of 1/55,  so there is an oportunity to create many details in a higher level of quality.
During creation of previous models I have received many valuable and professional information about sailing ships, their construction and fitting from one of the greatest experts - Captain K.L. who has taught me a lot and I will also use his advice here.

The main build log you can find here:

I started to install yards and sails. I wanted to furl the spritsail course and spritsai topsail, but I was not satisfied with the result, so I changed my mind and decided to leave these sails without furling. From this reason I had to make additionally the water holes in the spritsail course (Druxey - you were right). It was somewhat complicated because the yard with sail has already been installed on the bowsprit.

To Druxey - some sails will be partially furled - fore and main course, sprit sail and sprit topsail - from this reason I saved little bit time and made no water holes - they will not be visible.
To Ilhan Gokcay - there are only two folds at the edge. The edges are reinforced with diluted PVA ( 3 (water):1 (PVA) ratio). After drying is posiible tu cut the cloth without fraying. The belts are made from the same reinforced cloth - without folds.
Mike R - bolt rope is attached with glue for textile.
Now all the sails are attached to their yards.

    Many thanks.
All about 600 pcs reef points are in place. Now the only thing left is to attach the sails on the yards.

Thank you guys for very nice comments and likes.
I added all strenghtening belts and bolt ropes with cringles. For the finishing of the sails, it is only necessary to add the reef points.

    Thank you guys.
After a short break I started to sewing the sails. I managed to get a nice soft batiste with a slight beige touch, so I did not have to work with a dye. At this moment, I have sewn all the sails on which "only" is left to add different reinforcement and reef bands, add a bolt rope and fasten the reef points. And then, of course, bending the sails to the yards - that´s enough work.

    Hi druxey,
I know about this problem. This situation describes David Antscherl in his book of Swan model (the picture from your post is propably from this book). But on the other hand, I have no reason to disbelive informations which was published by Lees and Petersson (both books I own).
Standing rigging is finished, the rudder is in place. Now is the time to prepare the sails.

The topmast level is done, it remains only topgallant level and the standing rigging will be completed.

Tops are now installed on the masts, completed futtock shrouds and crowsfeets. The "first floor" is finished and I can start with "second floor" - the topmasts.

Update - the side gallery windows are now in place. All the windows are PE brass & rather plain looking,so I framed them with some .6mm strips. Still have some railings to add & a bunch more trim work to do on the stern fascia.

    Hi Mates,

Thanks so much for the likes, and comments always so appreciated.

First attempt with lights done. Well the first one in any case. I very much like the look of these super tiny yellow LED's

Parts: toothpick, silicone tubing, black pinstripe tape. Here are some updated shots.

The next lights will all attach to the side walls so will need to make tops that will attach with hooks. This first lantern will hardly be  viisible
so just attached it directly to that beam.

    Hi Mates,

FYI: The LED 3V lights and switch arrived. YES these will be perfect. The LED is so tiny that it will, in scale seem, like a candle.
Waiting of the silicone 3mm tubing so that I can build the lanterns.
The wires are also so tiny that I think that I can manage to actually install the lights through the bottom of the lanterns, add a bit of white paint to represent the
candle wax within the lantern housing, easily hiding the wires from view - I think (:-)
Very happy with this light supplier!!  Will update soon--

Hi all now I have finished my build of the Soleil Royal I thought I would start this one. The X section comes with the kit of the whole ship which is quite cool but I will start that one probably in the winter. I have made a start on building the ribs by putting them on the kell as you can see I have been building it outside because of the lovely weather we are having at the moment. Once dry the inner planks have been glued into place and the mast foot fitted . I decided to plank over the mast foot as staining it didn't look right. Next job making the lumber board and strake which was a lot more fiddley than I was anticipating but turned out ok . Hopefully tomorrow I will start filling up the area with bits and bobs

Hi everyone - after a lot of shimming & re-shaping (plus a few choice words)I got the framework for the side galleries on.In order for the wedge shaped pieces to fit the hull and the stern fascia plus the PE windows, they had to be modified quite a bit.
