    Elijah,

JesseLee just posted on his Syren log about a jig he made for drilling the mast holes at the correct angle. Have a look here:

For the solid hull Phantom, about 0.5" at most.  Measure the length of the supplied lower mast dowel.  Then, from the plans, measure the height of the lower mast above the deck.  The difference (dowel length minus height above deck) is the amount available for your hole in the solid hull.  Start slightly short of the target and dry fit to see if things look right.

Do you have a drawing? normally it is shown on that, for a POB build, I presume somewhere between 1/2" and an 1" would do. The Dolphyn (I still have under construction, a POF) has about 4/5"

    Cheers

P.s. With these kind of questions, it comes in handy to know the scale you are building at. You might add it to your topic's title

Hello again! How deep should the mast holes be?

Cobr@ nailed it Elijah. The reasoning is it's easier to get the mast (and your drill) into a known position - perfectly vertical -  and then make adjustments to the hull position for the angle.

Plumb line. Basically a length of string or rope with a weight on the end, you hang it up and it has no option but to hang in a perfect vertical line

Thanks, but what's a plumb line?

Thanks everyone! Mike, they are fittings that came with the kit. Sadly, I am not done drilling large holes. Does anybody here have some advice as to drilling the mast holes at the right angle?

There is an oddity shop in my neighborhood that has things such as giant pencils ! The one in the picture is not one of them though. My hull is about 9" long, or a bit longer than the average pencil. Here is the picture, as promised!

    Until next time!

Hello again! Thanks for all the comments! I made and attached the cleats. I sanded them, drilled a hole on the center, inserted a wire, cut them to size, painted them, and glued them to the bulwarks. Next up will be eye bolts and hawse pipes.

    Until next time!

Thanks Bill! I will take a look at it. I have finished sanding the cap rail, and you can see some of the cleats I am working on. I sand the cleats, drill a hole in them, insert and glue in a wire, and then cut the wire to length. The wire adds strength to the connection to the bulwarks.

    Until next time!

I finished seven of the full frames, including 2 pairs of gunport frames.  They have a recess for framing the ports in.  The frames on the Lauck Street AVS :Patrick Henry", which I just finished, had bevel lines on the frame drawing that you rubber cemented to the glued up frame.  A Dremel tool made quick work of beveling the frames off the model.  The final fairing of the hull was pretty easy, both inside and out.  The Fair American has no bevel lines.  My plan is to smooth the inner surface of the frames pretty well before installing them, while leaving the smoothing of the outside surface to happen as the outer hull is faired.

Enjoy building, I had great fun and love the result. A good kit with a great build log. A real pity the kits are no longer available

    Good Morning Dave!
Love the materials list. Cherry is one of my favorites, it holds a nice edge/details. At 1:48 scale, what are the dimensions of this build?

Looks like a great start! I'll be watching with interest

Perhaps a visit to see you soon since our harbors are so close !

Rigging continues.  Finally got the rest of my deadeyes rigged.  I think i used a different technique on each one.  I finally got the seizing knots how I wanted by the time I got to the last one.  I also got the boom strung up.  Rigging figure 8s around the belaying pins was a bit of an adventure but worked out in the end.

Next will be the two smaller booms but im not sure how that will go without weight to hold against the lines.

Thanks all.  I think my admiral is more excited than I about finally nearing completion.  Been almost a year I've tinkered with this off and on now.  Tonight I got all my cargo done and installed.   I made a couple of wooden boxes to add to the mix.

I also finally got around to working on the chain plates.  One side done.

Mast work continues.  getting the brass work for the topmast mounting took me a while to figure out how to form the brass tight, solder it shut, etc.  I was quite happy with how it turned out.

Dry fitted the masts again just for quick look.  Just need to get my booms finished, then I can start pulling line.
