YO, Howdy folks, yes I am still alive.
The poor Endeavour has been sitting on the desk feeling sad and lonely,
and that is not about to change.

The trouble that has developed, is that this build as I am doing it, is too involved, and
takes too much thinking time, and because i am fiddling with it,
changing timbers, and trying to do as accurate as possible, it
is taking time I don't have at the moment.

Therefore, it is on hold until I can put in more than an hour or so, here
and there.. The time thing is not going to get better, because i am thinking about
a change in how I work, that will make even less time available next year.
That and all the other life things, that seem to be need to be done these days.

I have done a little bit of construction, and made some hinges for the rudder,

But because I need to do something,
I am going to partake of that time honored tradition, of model ship builders, and

start another one. Build log coming soon.

    Thanks Chris.

I am also trying to serve rope for the shrouds. Have not done this before and don't have Syren's wonderful Servomatic machine or equivalent. But managed to do these by hand.

    Good Morning Tim
For a 2nd time builder you are very neat and precise.
Finely detailed work on the hooks.
Sorry can't help with the history side, I am new
to old ships and model building myself.
    Cheers Chris
    And PS welcome to MSW

So here are a few pictures of where I am up to. Taken in very bad light....
As you can see, I am going with an unhistorical colour scheme, but I like it.
I am pleased with the patina on the copper plates...used drybrush.

I would welcome historical info about how to rig it more accurately than the AL instructions. I am using Petersson's book on Rigging Fore and Aft Period craft, but this uses an 1815 ship the Experiment as it's example. I am assuming the Maid would have used quite different rigging. Any ideas?

This is my second ever build so I am a learner. I am busy working hard and have three kids so build progress will also be slow. I chose the Maid because it seemed like a pretty simple cheap kit to cut my teeth on. I am going with a slightly unhistorical colour scheme, inspired by Clayton Osterling's Experiment
    (See here: http://www.shipmodel.com/models/experiment-full-hull-nav).

I would welcome feedback, encouragement and advice. Thanks!

But despite being new to this, I am totally hooked.

    Greetings,

Finally something to write about. Completed all the mast components, installed the deadeyes on the tops and rigged the blocks on the top bottoms.

I made the deadeyes using Dave Rowe's method. It never ceases to amaze me how the first one of anything always takes forever and last one takes no time at all. It shows what repetition can do.  Now for some final clean up, finish painting the black on the masts and start the rope work.

I will install all rigging I can on each component before assembling the masts and yards.

I made the rigging stations that someone was kind enough to post. Works very well. I never realized how much better the helping hand work when they are screwed down. Also, covering the alligator clip ends with some tacky tubing really helps. The blocks no longer jump out of the clips nor does any work piece get marred.

I have a big decision to make- to serve or not to serve that is the question. Since this is not going to be a historically correct model as I have made to many mistakes/changes running back and forth between the Corel plans and the AOS and back again this is a huge lesson learned. I wonder if the effort will be worth it.

If I do decide to serve, I will try to make an add-on to the rigging station. This should not require too much engineering. And I am a jig lover.

Any way, here are some photos.

To those in the US, Happy Thanksgiving. To those Down Under and the Kiwis, hoist a pint and celebrate something.

    Regards

Hi Lawrence and Thanks. The lathe is really nice to have even though I don't use it to it's full capabilities yet. As far as being justifiable, mine has not reached that point, but when I retired I had a one time time chance to buy my tools and I went for it. So the bank may be able to take my house but the tools are mine!!!

The 'Pritt' continues to creep towards completion, but currently at the pace of an arthritic snail!  The standing rigging is now all fitted, but not finally secured until I do a bit of fine tuning on tensions.  The two lines that can be seen hanging loose from the main mast are the running backstay pennants, which had to be fitted over the mast before the upper rigging, although they will be about the last rigging to be finally run as they, together with the mzzen running forestays, are in the way of all the mainsail rigging.

The two white circles that can be seen lying on the starboard side of the deck are the partially made lifebuoys.

    Ships Boats by the Shipyard
My kit came with 1 hollowed out hull for a small boat.
It does not match close to any of the boat details in the Endeavour AoTS.
According to the AoTS, there were 4 boats:
    - Longboat
    - Pinnace
    - Cutter
    - Yawl

    Longboat
I will aim to re-create the Endeavour's Longboat as shown by Karl Marquardt in the AoTS.

What to use to built the longboat:
I had a look through logs of other Endeavour builds and found a frame set for a longboat.
I scaled the picture for a longboat (94 mm x 35mm x 20mm) which Banyan had noted in his log, for Ray Parkin's version for the construction of the longboat. This size will fit nicely

I made and laid the keel, mounting it in a jig for the hull construction.

    Frames:
The frames were cut from 0.6mm ply.
16 in total with balsa spacers on the top to keep them parallel.

The 2 legs at the back keep the frames vertical over the keel.

    Stern:
I added a double thick ply stern.

Started removing the mid sections of the frames.

The hull will be carvel planked directly onto the frames.
    As per Banyan's Endeavour log:
Parkin had mentioned the longboat would have been clinker built rather than carvel.
This would provide a boat more robust which could be used to conduct the intended close-in coastal surveying (which I am assuming Cook would have wanted).

So much more work for the shipyard to get into for this one little boat.
    3 more to decide on.

Normally waking up to this would have made me sick......but now I am retired so what this means now is more boat building   . I am fairly sure yard work is done for the season so the shipyard will be in full swing now, hopefully.
I have been fairly busy working on the Trabaccolo although what I have to show does not really show it. I have installed all the wales on both sides and have now started to paint the lower ones. The wales were two strakes of 1.5 x 5 mm(grey) and then 3 strakes of .5 x 5 mm(blue).
The first two strakes of 1.5 mm went on with little problems, the .5 mm strakes required me to do some spiling at the stern and some minor tapering at the bow on the last strake.

The procedure for spiling was to apply tape on top of last strake, trace outline on tape, apply tape to card stock and cut out, then trace outline on veneer and cut with scroll saw. Tape was added to veneer to prevent splintering. I trimmed excess using drum sander on mill, the use of the clip is very helpful when sanding .5 mm stock, it helps prevent it from bending and twisting. Final shaping was done by hand. There was a total of six spiled planks

Painted and planked the inside of the bulwarks.
The first row of planks, where the deck and the bulwarks meet, were painted before fitting, to give a nice tidy edge

The keel and bulkheads on this kit are only 4mm thick and after fitting the deck, the joints were a little bit flimsy, so i fitted some strengthening pieces to the joints

Lower deck planked and cross beams for the next deck fitted
There was no reason to plank this deck at all as none of it will be seen later, so i used some thinner planking and saved the kit supplied planking in case i need it later in the build

Made the Pinnace first as it is white and better to practice on something which is painted. Have to do oars, but made up a simple gaff rig and mast step for one of it's sailing configurations just for the fun of it.  Hate doing the boats..it was getting to this stage 5 years ago that made me stop although I am reasonably happy with this first one. I dont think this is a strong point of the kit to be honest.

Back in the Shipyard - Masts and Tops

Well the yard has been slowly progressing the many items for the above.

    Mast Tops:
So for each of the mast tops I added some "pins" to the under beams to locate the platform accurately for re-assembly.

    beams and platform(underside) apart

you get the idea by now !

    Aligned to press together.

The underside of the main and fore platforms
Since most of these items are finally painted black(seems most do), not too worried about minor defects or different timbers.
Although it would be nice to have a contrast their somewhere like the AMM Replica Mizz platform.

    Started on the Mizzen Mast:

Rough at the moment, >> more work to details.

Cheeks added to the Fore Mast:

Also have Main mast to same stage, shape the cheeks and add the bands.

    Good Evening Hof
Time does get by before you know, its months later.
I was just thinking, its time to get on with it. I have done a little bit lately, been
making the rudder hinges and soldering them. I think they are going to look
pretty good. I need to get the deck furniture sorted out and start making it.

One thing that has been taking time lately, apart from all sorts of things around home,
is that i have a new kitchen designing software, and I have
been learning to use it. That and all the usual one person, small business, book work.

Looking forward to seeing some pics of the new deck .
