The next challenge was placing the top wale on the hull as in the pictures below you can see the steam bending that was involved.
They actually turned out very accurate once they were done and they fit very well to the hull.

The first bend was a challenge as I had to bend them against the long edge and then I left them over night to dry. I had some initial spring back but I then soaked a second time and clamped them overnight for a second night with less spring back at this time. Then into the 3rd day, I gently steam bent with my wife's flat iron the bow and stern with very satisfactory results...

Prior to gluing them down, I stained them...

Here are the wales stained and attached...

I had some trouble gluing the top wale at the stern and when reviewing the plans I noticed they should have been glued and ended below the stern extension and the run of the wale certainly would have been more natural looking. I better start reading the plans with more attention.

PS Sorry as I can't seem to get the last image to rotate properly for viewing.

1.9 . Figured levels for rubbing piece and guard rail

Levels are made of a pear on the MF-70 Proxxon milling machine by means of extras - a laid on little table (brass of 6 mm, fastens in grooves of a coordinate table) and self-made figured mills (from nails with a diameter of 3 mm).

Here is more progress on the forecastle bow which started off in error...

When I glued the bulkhead forecastle bow piece I noticed later from the plans (that I should have read in more detail) that I should have leaned forward the top edge in a forward incline. I solved this to a degree by building up the bow piece and sanding back the bottom edge to recreate a slight forward leading top edge. Sorry as I do not have a picture of the correction. Looks better anyways...

Well, I just surprised myself and finished up my crows foot rigging a day earlier and it even looks good!

With that, all the main mast yards are in place and I am ready to move on to the mizzen mast. Partly because I am still in the mood to rig and partly because I am not in the mood to start sanding on S.R., I am going to go ahead and push on with La Couronne. So that means more pictures and entertainment for all of you! For now, here are the current pics.

Michael, I did include a close up of the Euphroe blocks. Hopefully that clears that up a little more. I had to use the camera on my phone as both batteries on my good camera are apparently dead... so focusing in on the close ups was difficult but I think you can see enough. I can always upload better if needed once the batteries charge.

Thank you Michael on the kind words and to the likes as well.

The Euphroe blocks that you pointed out are just as you suspect, custom but simply made. Scrap wood, drill the required number of holes stacked on top each other the then I trim and sane the block to size and shape. Basically, it is just an oval with a row of holes.

Where is used the fiddle style blocks on the crows feet, I cannot say for certain if this is correct. My drawing was not very clear on this either but as to function, it works fine as it is still one hole on top of another. I first thought of using double and triple blocks as you have said as the way Corel draws their rigging, it looks like all the ropes pass through the same plane as they would in a double or triple block. This is incorrect. The proper rigging uses Euphroe blocks as described above.

My recommendation would be to stick with the Euphroes. In fact, my entire forestay rig I fear may be incorrect. Right now I have the stay stropped to a double block and the crows feet splitting there. I am starting to see that this may be wrong and that the stay may have been two separate ropes leading to the crows feet and then to the shrouds. I do not yet know if this is true for La Couronne or not so I do not think I will change that unless I get confirmation.

Let me know if you have any more questions. The 17th century rigging is definitely a challenge to interpret what should and should not be there.

    EJ,

Nice update on your rigging work. As you know I am presently "treading water" trying to get mine right. I am seeing a lot of these types of bits on my Corel rigging sheet. See your photo just below.

I expect that you made these?  Just three drilled holes and run the lines thought - nothing more nothing less?

Also it looks as if fiddle blocks can also be used. Is it correct to run two ropes through - one above the pulley and one below? These details are a bit confusing to me. I installed double and triple blocks trying to accomplish the same thing - but removed them. I'm sure that I was totally wrong.

Your advice will  be much appreciated.

PS: Deck IS also looking v. good.

I've always made those particular lashings tarred as I agree with you in the amount of water they would be exposed to on a regular basis would justify them being tarred. In my understanding of rigging, with a few exceptions, unless it is running rigging used to make something move, it would be tarred for protection.

As always, great work and nice clean rigging. Those bowsprits with the spritsail masts really make a statement when installed.

There is something I'm curious about.

Somewhere I've read that the four round holes in the transom served as seats of ease.
But on your model there are four cannons through these holes.

    Went looking in your buildlog
And found this (old) photo from the transom
    ( i think page 30)

Denis: thanks you are always so kind with your posts (;-)

Patrick: I used Landström for this bit. The only trouble I had was trying to locate falconets that matched the drawing from the book - I did not. I don't remember if F. Hocker mentions this in his books. As always thanks for your continued interest in this build.

    Hi Mates,

Continuing by installing the bowsprit mast. While deciding what size rope to use noticed my novice lack of rigging planning ahead. Easy fix (;-)

Also needed to decide if I should use tarred rope or not. There seems to not be a right answer with this.
The 1/10th installed tarred, and the 1:1 not. Clayton’s also did not use tarred. That said; the rope that I installed has a “shiny” tinge to it – not too comfortable with its look.  Here are some preliminary shots of the work so far.

PS: It would seem that these mast lashings, given the amount of moisture they receive, should be tarred?

    Cheers,

    More progress... (from the past)

I am very happy with how the first planking went. I perfected some techniques with regards to steam planking and though the wood was quite solid, I was able to get all my bends at the bow and stern by soaking for 10-15 minutes and then with my wife's flat hair iron, I was able to get all the bends I needed. Some fill was needed at the bow and stern, but mostly because of problems with the bulkheads, rather than problems planking.

On these images, I was also able to get my first wale plank perfectly placed on both sides. The kit recommends to paint black, but I will be doing a darker stain for the wale and wales to follow...

I'm back with a partial update! I have not been idle on the build just slow this past week and weekend. I did get a lot done in that I stained my deck and my dog plus grilled up a lot of food for the admiral and myself, had a few drinks and spent a nice evening on the deck with the admiral and a bottle of wine.

Now back to work! So, I have been working on the main top gallant yard crows foot rigging and am no longer clear if I am building a model ship or training to be some type of crazy surgeon but I do know that I need to either grow more hands or buy more clamps! While I do not have pictures of everything yet, I did get all three main yards in place with the course and main top rigged. Top gallant yard is bent to the mast and now it is a matter of getting the crows foot in place. A few more nights of working and I should have it. I will add more pictures then but I figured a small update is better than none. Enjoy!

Unless you can show proof otherwise, I think it's alarmist and wrong to attribut the cause of any cancer, fatal or otherwise, to exposure to wood. Can you site a case of wood exposure causing cancer, in any field? I have NAVER heard of such a thing. Certainly there are caustic woods just as there are individual sensitivities and allergies to woods. But wood doesn't cause cancer. Back to poisons in chemachals used in hobbies: do you know of an instance of a poisonous chemical found in a material used in the hobby industry that DOESNT already have a warning on its label? If you do (and I doubt it) then you could make a case for trying to raise awareness about a hidden danger. But there IS awareness already, we all KNOW that solvents and other hobby products like them will require careful handling and extra precautions. If your true concern is for the health of model builders, the dangers you should address are whatever factors can be shown to be causing health issues within the hobby. But here is what I think you will find: there ARE no hidden health risks unique to model building, building models does NOT heighten anyone's risk of death or sickness. if you can prove otherwise please site an actual documented case and prove me wrong. The health of model builders is being negatively impacted by the same factors effecting the entire population: heart disease, obesity, smoking-the same well known factors were are all well informed of. And looking at poisonings in the whole population, most of them are due to medications, NOT the use of products found in our hobby.

So here I start another Build Log...

This being my 3rd wooden model ship started, and only one being completed (the first perhaps a little bit over my head), I purchased this model kit on Ebay for a very good price about 20 months ago and actually only began this kit in the late fall last year.
At first I was not going to do a build log as I always find my time limited with regards to posting progress and updates but given the lack of build logs for this particular Mamoli kit (another one, the first on this forum, just recently started this last month), I thought I would start one.
I have always found the age of Exploration of the most interest, and especially with regards to Christopher Columbus...
and that being said here is the token picture of the opened box.

This kit is perhaps 20 years old and no such luck with regards to laser cut parts...
I have started a Caldercraft kit, finished a Billings Boat kit, and this now my 3rd, having started a Mamoli kit.

First impressions were excellent with regards to the plans and documentation and supplied parts, especially with regards to the planking strip wood - beautifully milled wood with tight dimensions and excellent wood grain and colour.

The bulkheads were incredibly loose in their respective slots along the length of the keel, and that is not exaggerating!
Loose from side to side and top to bottom (from where they should have been sitting) in the slots...

I carried on as best I could, not realizing completely the true importance, with regards to making sure everything was lining up perfectly square and true.
Needless to say, some problems were had later in the build...
