Here are some pics of the new windlass. I still need to make the travelers and the whelps but am happy with how it came out. I also painted the riding bits red.

While transferring the pictures to my computer the connection was lost between the two devices and it deleted most the pictures on my camera aswell as rearranging the folders in my camera. I never had this happen before.

    THE CANNONS
Since the present xebec is a rather big model and has planted its roots in my sitting room, I want to remove it from there for starting the modifications only after some key elements have already been made.
Well, just because I have not much space for it elsewhere!
So I decided to prepare first two type of components that will take a bit longer to be made:
    -The 16 cannons;
    -The 7 wolf heads.
Preparing the above components will take at least a month...
    I started with the cannons.
at the moment 4 have been completed and 3 more are almost ready.
    that leaves 9 cannons more.
I think it will take around 10-11 days more.
The 7 wolf heads will be a more complex argument, since I will need to sculpt them.
in the attached photos: the cannons already made and a photo where an old cannon is compared with a new one.
Definetly an improvement! (well, is not so complex to make something better than this little monster! )

Well not quite finished as I found out after writing my previous post I still hadn't made the warping drums on either side. I have since made the drums and will post pics of the NOW complete windlass soon.

Used the original plans blew them up 200 per cent and cut out the patterns and taped together the keel all this took about four hours. The new Bireme will be 42 inches long and power will be motors plus gearbox which are on their way here.

Thank you Rich, when trying this lathe, you understand what rigidity means.

Here is the first scratchbuilt I did from the drawdings of Harold Hahn.

While building it, the NMM said they did not have any plans from a back view. Few years later I saw one drawing in a magazine.

    THE WINDOWS ANOMALY
When I built the model a lot of time ago I was puzzled by the strange position of the windows placed above the gunports.
their position reached some height that was technically useless for a practical use.
now finally with the original drawings I have discovered that the windows were in such a position that makes perfectly sense.
The overall lenght of the ship's hull is the same of the author of the purchased plans (well is a calculated aproximate lenght, since the original drawing doesn't have any numbers at all), but now everything fits well.
in the photo can be seen:
    -photo of the purchased plan, where the misplaced windows can be seen;
-Autocad modification of the original drawing, with the two decks exalted in red colour and with a man positioned.
It can be clearly see that now the windows works really as windows!

Since I made the model accordingly to the purchased plans, many modifications will be needed, when I will start to scrap the model.

Since I decided to go with the windlass instead of the capstan I was left with a large area of blank deck towards the stern so I framed in a new hatch and cut a hole in the deck. I will make a separate board to mount the rudder servo under this new hatch, plus I will be able to get the battery in and out easier now as well as having access to the stern area.

I applied the second and third coats to the bulwarks then did touch ups on the rest.

Jerry you just reminded me that I never posted any older pictures as I promised in my first post. They are a good way to show how far I've come.
I thought that I had more from during the planking process but they must not have been backed last time I restored my computer so the only copies went down with 1.0.

The Byzantium is now sporting the latest fashion, white gun port stripe black rails and red bulwarks. I still need to apply another coat of red to the bulwarks and do some touchups.

here are some pics of the battery and my new servo tray layout marked with sharpie. I could not get the battery beneath the servo tray as per my original plans so I put it behind the main mast, it will be difficult to get in and out but it will have to do.

I ordered the battery yesterday it should be here within the next few weeks. I also took some better pictures of the block which is my first successful piece of brass work. The problem I kept having was that the solder didn't want to stick to the metal. Turns out that I was getting the metal to hot, when I lowered the temperature the solder worked perfectly.

    Hi everyone,

I finally get to move on to the remaining deck clamps. I made a little marking jig for the tops of the clamps. The head slides back and forth on a beam that sits on the sills of the gun ports. A black pointer slides up and down within the head (the pointer is glued to a short square post captured by the lower knurled screw). So I can set the pointer at the right distance from the sill at each gun port from the drawing, then slide the beam through the head and the two gun ports, and mark with a pencil. Keeps everything symmetrical, and aligned to the gun port sills, which is the important thing.

I thought I would have enough room at first but it didn't work out that way and if I do make the mechanics to place in the boat it just won't look right. I was debating doubling the size and today ordered two gear reduction motors and speed controls which will have plenty of torque to move a bigger boat. This one I will make to look scale now that I've had a bit of practice building Biremes.

My initial plan for operating the sails wa back in post #16.
The plan's generally the same except that the winches that will control the braces will slide fore-n-aft against springs to maintain tension on the braces, and these mechanisms will be mounted side-by-side instead of in tandem.  The original plan had the braces going to springs mounted on posts forward to get tension.

Today the Delrin plastic arrived and I got right down to making the mounting blocks for the winch servos.  My shop's still a shambles and I haven't a clue where all my clamps got off to, but I finally got 8 of the little beggars made, plus two screw-ups.

If you opt to try this system, make a jig for drilling the holes, precision makes a big difference with this, any thing that rubs and doesn't slide effortlessly will be a big problem under sail.

The springs I was initially going to use felt too hard, enough to bow the yard, or even possibly break it, so I opted for two much weaker but shorter springs.  I only had 8 of these, so I only put them on one side of each winch slide.  We'll see when I get to testing how this will work out.

Next up I'll make the fairleads for each servo, which looks like it'll mount to one of the mounting blocks and lean out slightly to clear the end of the winch drum, which is the diameter of a compact disc.
