I have started on the details such as the capstan and the hatches. the capstan slides up and down the mast covering the Hinkley hinge when in the down position but allowing the mast to fold when in the up position.

What a cool thread.  Here's one of my regular items.

    Bamboo Skewers.

Bamboo stays very strong at small scale and pulls through a draw plate pretty well.  At my 1:500 - 1:1250 scale it works great for masts and yards.  On a larger scale I think it would do well for oars or harpoons.

Here's a couple of ships with bamboo masts and yards.  I've thrown in a couple other shots to help show scale.  It may be hard to see but that is an American dime next to the Santa Maria.

For now I am going to move on, I will revisit the cannons later. In the mean time I will be working on miscellaneous other parts.
Since my last post I made the chain plates and the cross trees for both mast. Oops looks like I forgot to take pictures of the cross trees, I will try to post some soon.

I made the wales and the cap rails then I put on the first coat of paint. I also took a closeup of one of the mast hinges.

I got a call from a relative who wants me to make them a ship in a bottle, they were not specific on what they wanted they just said a pirate ship. I thought abought it and realized that real pirate ships are not that recognizable as "pirate ships" so I decided on the Black Pearl from Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean.
I found some plans on the web and immediately started on the model. The hull is made in three pieces from balsa, the upper works are made in four pieces also balsa, the decks are made from thin plywood and the mast are bamboo skewers.

Our shipmodel club mans a booth every year at the county fair, where we 'display our skills' and talk to folks about ship modeling.  Three of the top four questions asked are:  "Is that a pirate ship?"  "Is that made of balsa wood?" and "How do you put a ship in a bottle?" ( #4 being "Wher eis the bathroom?")   They would have a field day with this model!

I have not done much work on the Sophie but felt that I needed to post an update so you you guys don't think that I abandoned the project. Since my last post I did some work on the rigging and got a new lightbulb.
I wont be working on the Shopie for a wile as I am making a SIB for a relative right now.

I started work on the ship which is going to be HMS Sophie from Master and Commander by Patric O-Brian. The hull is made from some fine grained softwood I had left over from a previous project, the bulwarks are made from card.
The HMS Sophie changed paint schemes throughout the book so I chose the one that I could make with the paint that I had.

There are several tutorials on casting out there. The principal will be the same whether using resin or brittania. The mold can be a 2 part rubber mold or from modeling clay. Alumilite is one of the main suppliers. I also believe there is a tutorial MSW that will help you get started. The great thing about resin is it will show everything that is on the master including the fingerprints.

Hey Jerry, I've got another one for you!

Not as clever as the stays'l sheets but a simple way to raise and lower the stays'ls without having to turn three different diameter winch drums.

Recap - all the sails on this ship are in lots of three and the course and tops'ls are basically the same relative to each other so one pull will handle the course and one for the tops'ls but the stays'ls are all different sizes and travel different distances up the stays so I was thinking I had to turn three different diameter drums for the one servo. These would stack one on top of the other and give the different rate of pull needed for each sail.

    Better idea !

I know it isn't quite scale but then this is "stand off" scale.

I tie a brass ring into the halyard for each sail immediately below the block on the mast.
The halyard/lazy jack forms a closed loop for the lower and upper stays'l and the halyard for the top stays'l runs through the rings on the other two and goes to the servo drum.

Therefore the top stays'l is the only one that is directly connected to the sail winch servo. As it is pulled down the ring in it catches the ring in the upper stays'l halyard and starts pulling it down and then catches the ring in the lower stays'l halyard and pulls it down. By setting it up with the rings in the correct place on the halyards they all pull down to the same spot and the sails raise to their correct height.

The trouble is going to be in lowering the sails because the rings won't pull the previous one up. I think a lanyard linking each ring at the correct distances will do the job. So the top stays'l halyard will go up the mast as the sail is pulled down, when the lanyard reaches it's limit it will start pulling the upper stays'l halyard and so on.

My only concern with the lanyard is that it may get blown around while slack and get fouled on the tressle or deck furniture. If this is the case I may need to use a chain for the lanyard because it won't blow around as much. Failing that I could put a small sinker on the lower ends of the lanyards to keep the thing tight. Time will tell.

First pic, the tape on the halyards represents where the top of the sail would be.

    Lowered.

    Raised.

You can see the ring with the halyard passing through it just under the block for the upper stays'l

With sails raised all three rings would be together just a bit above the deck.

Also.............................I MAY have something interesting to show tomorrow.

Here are some photos of the yards, yard tackle, and stirrups.  At 1/72 scale I think this is about as small as I would like to attempt making the stirrups this way.  If you coat the assembly with super glue it makes a nice stiff stirrup that hangs from the yard nicely.  That is my self made serving machine the yard tackle is laying on.

I made the master cannon that will be used to make the mold for casting the rest. The cannon is made from paper brushed with diluted PVA  and rolled around a piece of brass tube then turned on a lathe. In order to make the cannon I first needed to make a lathe to turn it on to do this I strapped my Dremel to a board and put some eye hooks in another piece of wood which was clamped onto the first. one end of the tube that I rolled the paper around was placed through the eye hooks and the other was chucked into the Dremel.

Sure, if I can hire you to do the drafting of the furniture, as I love your drawings. So just send your idea's and we'll make it a joint effort.

The upper half of the cupboard as two features, one shelf for pots and one to hold plates, I got the idea of some pictures I found of galleys.

Looks good in the water, Lextin.  Took me a minute to realize that you had to dig a pond.  Then I remembered about Lake Mirage.. or the lakebed at least.

I sealed the hull with thinned fiberglass resin yesterday and today I applied the first coats of paint. The red beneath the waterline is just a temporary placeholder until I get copper.
