The coppering looks really good! Did you use copper paint? Are you leaving the keel uncoppered? The other constitution models I have seen have plating on the entire hull below the waterline. The Model Shipways Connie is below.

It is a different language ! Whatever you decide to go with works for me. Have you joined any modeling clubs? I think it would be worth it.

just beginning the revell build and once long ago completed the revell Cutty so I remember the rigging issues with kit parts.  I am not as concerned with historic accuracy but rather a beautiful display model that is easier for and older builder and wife to complete.  I am buying replacement blocks and pins along with various sizes of line and brass tube to hopefully strengthen the yards and masts.  I would like a realistic looking wood deck and am thinking of purchasing a laser cut from scale decks and build up the bulwarks per your recommend approach for greater realism.

My skill sets are extensive but at our age the rigging will be a major challenge.  We think we want it in full sails and the kit supplied will be used since I can't find any premade after market.  We intend to stain them somewhat but the alternative would be to use silkspan and display sails reefed to the yards as in port would look.  Cant seem to find much guidance in this regard.  What is your opinion on sails and decking?  Also strengthing the yards and mast to prevent so much bending when rigging.  Any help would be appreciated we are also on a very tight budget so we cant afford to go all out otherwise I would have bought the Bluejacket wooden model. As it is I figure we will spend a couple hundred dollars in extras.

Glad to see that you are back at it,  Evan. Way back when you gave me some advice on putting the ill-fitting spar deck pieces together without the whole thing looking like Connie just left the battle. Things went forward fairly well until the winter time when I found out that CA doesn't dry well in low humidity. Any helps out there on this one? It really does take forever to solidify, then really dry. I am in Columbus, OH.

Meanwhile, thanks for your excellent work as an example that is very motivating.

    Ken,

Just met up with your 'Connie' build.  All I can say is "Wow!" What an education for me. Thanks for your great work. I will be following  along as I can. I am doing the Revell 'Connie, ' but as I am just getting back into building after about thirty or so years, every little bit of education helps.

    Thanks again,

Here is a detailed step by step sequence of using the brass gunport height gauge to add the wall planking between gunports. I found the gauge along with the gunport covers tack glued together to be   very effective and fast with great results. Sorry if to lengthy and basic for some but for those new like me it may save so time and frustration.

    They are fairly self explanatory.

Now to finish up the few to go then sanding down before adding the 1/16" thick wale planks so as not to ruin their edges.

Tom, Geoff thanks for your encouragement. I moved onto the stern filler blocks which not having a bandsaw was a slow process of sawing by hand. Once cut out I carved away using my trusty #11 Xacto blade and rough cut the shape. Here are a couple of views of the rough cut.
This shows the starboard block on the plan with the port side still trapped in the wood block.

    A rear view.

Here I test fitted the sanded block in place and blended in the counter block. I will wait until the port block is cut before gluing in place.

Spent the afternoon on a two hour cruise on the Lady Washington. I now have a much better understanding of the dynamics of the rigging having seen the crew set sails, work them and then stow them. I took 147 photos of details of everything; enough to scratch build if I choose to. The cruise was fantastic once we cleared the harbor and got into the open sea with 8-12 swells. Loved watching the bow rise and fall and the ship roll; at one point almost at a 45 degree angle. I was on the rear quarter deck near the tiller and had a great chat with the captain and listen to him call out maneuvers for the crew.
This ship is rigged very much like the Niagara and as I looked around recognized most everything. This ship was the fast British ship in the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean". This was just a great personal learning experience.
Here she is heading out of the harbor at Morro Bay.

Hey that Rattlesnake is looking pretty great. I remember when you started it.

Thanks for your interest in the mouse. It was pretty basic, I just followed Bob's idea of taking a square piece of wood proper for the line size, drill a hole in the center the size of the line and file it into a cone shape. Then just painted it black and slipped on the line.

    Frank -

I see you've started in on the sails for your Victory.  I like your initial effort with the spanker.

So sorry that I've neglected my log... I have a few updates to add and I will have a good few weeks to do some modeling during the holiday break.

I hope to have the hull halves glued together, the gun deck in place, and the false keel done.

    Thanks for your continued interest!

Work comes before pleasure, so look forward to some more on your build Evan.

I hope to start thinking about my Connie as soon as I am near finished on the Vic.

So your extensive build will be a great help for my 1812 build of this ship using the same material and scale ship as you.

Through you I contacted BlueJacket and got many of the items plus the maps which will be very useful for the rigging.

Great work and its nice to know your still working on it.

    Happy break

I don't know if you have an answer for this yet, but the way I tied the gun port doors was to use a very small drill bit to carefully drill the hole in the door. If you are careful, there will be no burring or breakage. Then, to get the thread through the tiny opening, I use a needle threader that I bought from JoAnne Fabric (or Hobby Lobby). These small threaders also come with some sewing kits. Once the gun port doors are firmly glued in place (with CA), you can thread the small diameter line through the hole. Drill the hole before gluing the doors in place. BTW—the needle threader is a very good tool for use in other areas where line needs to be drawn through small openings.

Best of luck with your build.

I did take a few night shots. They are a little grainy but the pics did come through. I do tend to agree with you billt: it is too clear. I will have to think about that a little. I will try the deck lines on scrap and see how they look.
