Don - with those types of "molds" I had to go thru a succession of bends and molds. The bend in the mold getting more acute each time. If you have those crimping benders, put just a slight crimp in a few spots.

I'm trying to remember who told me not to try to do the full bend in one shot

You make me want to pull my lathe down off the shelf. The one with very little sawdust on it. Your tutorial makes me think even I might be able to do that exercise.

What a nice addition to the build!

That beech could make a cool deck me thinks. I'm curious how it takes stain. Natural might do very well.

I would also like to find something besides walnut. I ordered 5 different species and will be cutting sticks myself.

I'm glad you're back buddy. I get worried when I don't hear from folks for a while. As Ken mentioned auto parts shops should have Bondo products. I love your miniatures! Maybe a few tin cups?

Every time I scroll past one of your deck photos I stop and gawk at your stain/finish. I still think it's one of the highlights of your build.

Mr. Mike, all ropes that go from the mast begin with a loop. The shrouds are the separated ropes; each shroud is made individually for itself... The rope with the block goes onto the shrouds, in the end, beginning with a loop as well...

Perfect Zoran! - That half blue boat looks a lot better than I thought. Light blue it will be.

On another note. I began the mast today. I was looking at the rigging and could not tell if the shroud was one rope that went up to the mast, looped around and came back down. Or is it 2 ropes that go up and tie off on the mast? It's also difficult to follow the rope that runs up the mast into the block.

Hello Mr. Mike ... Here are some samples.... Regarding the coloring of this type of a boat, people in the past were using the colours they had in that moment. They were fisherman and the only thing they were worried about was the functionality of the boat...

Hello again! Some moderate progress to report. The gun carriages have been partially assembled, so as to make staining them easier. All of the wooden parts have been created, except for the fasteners that keep the trucks from sliding off. The gun barrels are beginning to shape up, but I need to get some filler before I can put them together and paint them. Kurt recommended I use Bondo Glazing and Spot Filling Putty, #907. So far, I have been unable to locate it in any brick-and-mortar shop, so I will likely have to purchase it online. I will also eventually need to replace a swivel gun, as it has a major hole caused by a bubble that looks irreparable. The rudder has been built, as well as the tiller, but I don't think I have any photos of that yet. As I was making some metal parts, I decided to try my hand at making some miniature utensils to be placed on the model in the future. I made a butter knife, which, looking back, wasn't so great. It quickly disappeared to the next dimension, so I made a spoon. The spoon was successful, so I tried making a fork. That worked too, until I accidentally broke a prong off, so I trashed it. I then thought to make a new, better knife. I modelled it somewhat after the way I had seen swords made in a museum. They have a metal blade and interior handle, though the handle is not round, but has 90° edges. The base on the handle is wider, so as to prevent the exterior handle from slipping off. The knife was done much the same way. The handle was made of 1/32" cherry veneer, the same that was used on Phantom's planking. The squared off handle was 1/32" square, so the veneer stacked with it nicely. After the three layers we're stacked, the handle was sanded into shape. I think that these should go well with he fireplace that will go on the boat. All of the wooden parts for the rudder and tiller have been completed, and they are waiting to be stained. Essentially, I have a number of wooden parts waiting to be stained. Pictures to follow, some maybe later than others.

Hello Zoran - I am still open to coloring the upper hull. I would like to know what we are trying to simulate by doing so. From the build pix that I see (including yours) and from photos of the real boat, it looks like all have a color on the the bottom half, then just the wood on the top half. Did the old manuscript have any references to color? Maybe the coloring thing was something specific to Korcula?

Hey Zoran - I forgot to ask. The bow is an odd place for a handrail. What purpose did it serve?

Things are winding down on the hull. Other than the oars I believe all the pieces are in. Tomorrow I dust off the lathe and see how many of those nice square walnut sticks I can mess up. On the odd chance that I get on a roll I'll have to remember to taper the mast also.

I'm still on the fence regarding painting the upper hull. If there was some way to try before you buy I'd be all over it. But if it turns into something I really don't like, I'm hosed.

Most stuff wasn't shiny. If it was it was probably oiled and mainly things like deck furniture, rails, etc.  I would paint with a flat. If you want no shine then varnish with matte. For a touch of shine try satin. IMO semi gloss is too much.

I don't know. It depends on how the laptop screen is angled.  I think the first pic may be closer than I thought. After all it's 10-white to 1-green. And it was a light green.

Thank you Zoran - I would not have thought of a step.

I lightened up the blue, or at least I tried, 10 parts white - 1 part blue. It didn't seem to change much. Running with Zoran's idea I tried a stick with very pale green. The color is washed out in the photos but it is interesting in real life. I don't have enough dark green to do a larger test surface so sticks are as good as it will get for now.

I'm not sure Don. It's on the same laser sheet as the rudder but I'm not having any ideas  as to where it might go. In my experience pieces like that have gone on the stern post, but it doesn't seem to add anything there. The part is shown on the plans but it is all by itself in an inset.

I now have some more J.A. Green ordered. Zoran, that blue was 5 parts white, 1 part sky blue. I will try 6 parts white and maybe 7, but as Russ commented I should make a simulated hull side and try another sample.

What kind of strip goes on the bottom of the rudder? Wood?

There is also a piece #49 on one of the laser sheets. It is small and triangular. What is it for?

Hi Russ and thank you.  I think that is my usual m.o. , make a big (or too big) surface of scraps. My immediate problem is that just to be able to paint that stick I had to add thinner to the pretty much empty paint bottle and scrape down the sides just to get a couple of brushfulls. I'll need to order some more. What do you think of the blue?
