I downloaded the instructions on the Glad Tidings although this boat is a little less appealing I think I really would enjoying building this kit. And I would learn a lot and it seems complicated enough to me. I can imagine now how overwhelmed I woul be if I purchase the kit I mentioned. So Ithink the Glad Tidings is a good suggestion to start and see how far I come.

Thanks for the advises it is much appreciated!!!

    Ray,

Take some time and go here:  http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-modeling-articles-and-downloads.php

The Plans and Research area has a couple of good articles on what to expect in a kit and also choosing a kit.

The Materials and Tools area has some good articles on tools when you're starting including one article on tools not to bother with.

    I hope this helps.

    Ray,

Do  not be fooled by a label that says a kit is for 'beginners' - that is meant to create sales, not to ensure that you get a good start in the hobby. I believe it is always good advice to start with a simple wooden kit. Wood is different than working in plastic, and a simple kit will get you started well, teach you basic skills, save you money, spare you frustration, not take years to complete, and give you the satisfaction of getting a first wood model finished. HMS Snake is not an easy kit - lots of guns, lots of rigging, lots of repetitive tasks. Save it for a second or third model.

Sounds like a fun concept, coming up with your own design. She's going to be one of a kind! This will be fun to watch !

Once I had a basic shape I decided to run some African Mahogany planking so I could figure out how to fill in the bow and stern with solid blocks.I then added a Mahogany keel strip to help me eyeball the bow rise. Not sure what happened but I saw something and went off in a whole other direction. By adding Mahogany bow and stern sections I elongated the hull by several inches and that is when it became a dragon ship. The middle section looked like a belly of a beast and changed my plan, so I added blocks at the keel and transom lines to allow for diagonal planking. From here on anything is possible as the ideas are racing around in my head...

Hi all, this is my first attempt at mapping out a hull design. With no particular ship in mind I started out by making a grid on a piece of cardboard and drew a basic deck outline. With that done I cut out some cardboard ribs to form the middle section,
then using spacer blocks to stand the ribs up I adjusted the shape of the hull by eye with sandpaper and a utility knife. At this point it looked like I was going to end up with some sort of cabin cruiser.

Looking around the shop I found some old scrap squares of 1/2" plywood to use and started jigsawing out some ribs. After getting what I thought was the bulk of the middle section cut out I assembled them with 1 1/4" spacers. I then clamped the whole section in my small work table and proceeded to shape the frame with an orbital sander. Here is where my mind starts to race..lol

    Hi Keith

Well done so far. The hull's taking shape and she certainly looks like she's an interesting design.

    Keep up the good work.

    Cheers

The keel had to be remeasured to allow for the extra ribs.   I also had to adjust the spacing for them as well.

As the ribs were cemented in place,  I found alternate means to insure that they were straight.  I don't have a build slip......just my trusty pine board.

everything went well,  but I wasn't too happy with the bulwark posts.......I can always fix them later.

Spent the day tracing keel and frame patterns.... ready to take the old DeWalt saber saw to the keel this morning.... the frames are small enough to allow me to play with my ancient band saw.
Nigel.... just knowing you might pop in occasionally is kinda intimidating, but will only serve to pressure me to "up my game".... so long as you allow me to use your amazing build as a primary visual resource.
Jaager.... Thanks for the info (way over my head), but technical "discrepancies" are not really much of an issue to me.... no apologies to those of you who I admire for your dedication to the art.  But I decided long ago, as long as my kids, grand kids, and great grand kids, look at what I leave behind and say "WOW!" it will be fine with me.
    Welcome aboard mate.

Rest assured my friends, regardless of the end results, this should be the ultimate fun challenge for someone of my moderate skills.
    Now, let's make some sawdust.

I won't make it too ghoulish or too creepy but I will give it a certain degree of shock value, I will have a lot of fun surprising those on shore. I'm not building it for a childish fixation on horror or Ghoul shows, I am building it because no one ever does to my knowledge, I never was one to take the beaten path.
