Dutchman reacted to HIPEXEC in US Brig Syren by Hipexec - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64 - building as USS Argus
Gun platform with all the trimmings. Carronade is next if I can figure out how to mount it. If it was any smaller I'd throw in the towel.

I'm starting to install the carronade eyebolts. The slide eyebolts went right on with just a small pilot hole. The rear or lower eyebolt was a problem. When I started the small pilot hole the whole rear piece broke off (split). So I then gave up trying to drill a pilot hole in that fragile thin wood. I glued the eyebolts behind the rear wheels under the carriage. Looks okay to me.

I painted the brackets so they look like the original wood. I can't imagine anyone but me noticing this detail when the ship is finished.

Thanks for all the likes again.
Just a bit of progress on the long boat (I used some black heat shrink for the Gudgeons).
Still have to add the knees on the Thwarts and figure out how to make the iron step on the bowsprit. I am also not 100% happy with the windlass yet and may give that one another go. But in general I'm pretty happy how she looks...
The two last photo's were made after dark in the shed so the colour is a bit all over the place.

Dutchman reacted to MESSIS in Hermione by MESSIS - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1/89
And here we go... the first headsail (out of three) is allready blown by the wind.
I dont know guys how bad or good it actualy looks, but I think at least the sail is not hanging dead....
Does anyone thinks that the sail is hanging too high?

So today I went back to Hermione and have started forming her Fore staysail.
Its a new challenge again because I have never before done sails and running rigging of a period ship.
But so far I am statisfied with the results and I am enjoying it.

After the succesfull experiment to fill the sail, of my old Bireme build from 2015, with wind, using the GAC400 stiffener of JerseyCity Frankie's* method, I begun forming Hermione's Fore Staysail.
*Frankie is an experienced shipbuilding modeller and old member of our blog, whom I thank very much for his help and good advising.
For the experiment I made a new thread:
here are the results: a sail blowing!!

Now I have to glue these tiny wooden supports to the flange on the base of each carronade. I'm not good with all this tiny tiny stuff.

Well, I said the netting will be next. The plan was to make a start on the long boat while doing the netting. As mentioned before I suck at multitasking. So once I started the longboat, the netting had no chance and will have to wait.....lol.
I think I spent a good 8 hours sanding the inside and out before I got cold feet and didn't go any thinner. I'm sure I probably could go thinner but when I felt it starting to flex and crack a bit while sanding, I was happy to stop. I applied some creative ways to bend the frames prior to gluing them in.
It's a fun little project but takes just as much care as the big ship. Can't let your guard down or rush it....
I also forgot to dry fit the laser cut keel prior to sanding the hull so had to make a new one once I realised to do that and found out it didn't fit...
Here are some photo's (not everything is glued on yet).

Dutchman reacted to Jim Rogers in Phoenix by Jim Rogers - Master Korabel - 1/72 Scale
Got the cannons built and installed, built and installed one of Chuck's helm wheels (it is a teeny bit large but it looks miles better than WM that came with kit), built and installed grates (Chuck's), got the binnacle built and installed (Eugene you might want to correct directions and add binnacle location). Worked on head work.

I've started the cannon factory. Now I know why I don't build the Victory. The cast parts have a lot of flashing to be filed off.

Standing rigging: finished
And now the new challenge: running rigging and filling the sails with wind😈

I give up with this junk wood. I drilled four beautiful holes only to have them crumble after all the drilling was done. I made my own cross trees on my Connie by bending some good wood and drilling the pieces with no trouble at all. So much for the laser cut junk wood. All they had to do was pop some holes with the laser and that probably would have worked.

Thanks Eric,
Yours in coming along quite nicely too. I like your work. Only 500 hours or so to go to get to this point....lol.
But who is counting when you are having fun....
Peter

A bit more progress, this time on the cap rail details. I have added the stern davits, timber heads, inboard stairs and hammock cranes. The netting will be next.
I was so programmed to grabbing the model using the cap rail that it took 3 bend hammock cranes before this old brain switched on and figured out a new way of handling the model....lol
I let the photo's do the talking again.

Fighting top rails complete. The tops are just resting on the un-stepped masts. I'll glue on the tops next

Anxious to finish the standing rigging and make the first experiments with sails and GAC400... maybe I get to make sails filled with wind.
Standing rigging at its final stage:

Port side is now complete, I'm happier with how it turned out compared to the starboard side.

Pre-cut parts for the fighting top rear rail. They'll be pinned top and bottom as well as glued.

Standing rigging comming soon to its end and in the meantime more crew members are getting allready on-board... cleaning the deck floor and checking the cannons.

Completed the starboard planking above the wales.
Satisfied with how the bow came out.
Generally the planning looks ok, not great.
Could have done a better job around the gun and sweep ports. I'll make a jig for the other side so that they are more evenly spaced. I guess this side will be to the back when displayed.
