MESSIS got a reaction from Scottish Guy in New to ship modelling? But what do you build first?
Sorry for my disagreement.... but I advise Scotch Whiskey!😉

Anyway you guys, I really enjoyed your conversation about "what do you build first".

Here is my own beginners story:

The pattern I followed was succesful but actualy  I followed it unitentionally.

Without reallising it by the time , I went up,  through the road of history. I just followed boat building  through time: 500 BC first build, 350 BC second and so on... 10th century  AC and now lastly  a 17th century build.

First build 2015 Bireme by Amati 450bc. Finished with succes (beginners succes)(here in gallery)

Second build 2016 "Olkas".Thats an ancient greek trade ship (350bc). I got it as a gift in a box without label. There was a drawing in greek and it was a kit for the "Kyrenia Ship" found in Cyprus sea back in the 60s.I modified it to a more general variation and made  out of the Kyrenia model a typical variation of olkas (the greek trade ship of that era)(here in gallery)

Third 2017, was the well known  Drakkar (viking ship) apr. 9-10th century AC  from Amati. Worked and finished it it with more than a few modificatios. (here in Gallery)

And now lastly (started March 2017) Artesanias Hermione.... (build log available here in MSW)

So in this way the challenge had a porortionality,  based on the actual shipbuilding historical development through time.

Ofcourse a lot of reading was nescesary. Also I got a lot of help through friends here in our MSW Blog.

Tools were purchased through the needs of each model,  but also alongside my maturing skills and expirience.

Lastly I dont know if it really helped me the fact that I studied and had some expirience as a mechanical enginner.

Never the less I rather believe that wooden model ship building needs mainly two ingredients: "passion and patience".

ok guys thats my contribution to your enjoyable discussion

😉  @cog dear friend, Is it a sign of old age... or is it just old age? Ofcourse important its not the age but how you feel.

I remember my late father when with 82 he got upset and stopped going to  his club because "too many older gentlemen there... he preferred something more appropriate for his age".... and that worried my sister a lot, calling me all the time and asking his whereabouts. 👍

@Dutchman yes ofcourse... actually thats the whole fan in this blog.... Its a getting together of people from every corner of our planet! I believe thats a wonderful feeling!!

Planking finished and sanding already had some rough passes. I think its time to build a supporting jig in order to keep the model safe from keeping as the build goes forward.

    Hi everyone,

Am back again. 18 days grandson kept the shipyard shutdown. Now he is back to UK... time to catch up some work.

Just recalculated  the remaining plank gaps. It seems a joggler will be needed on each side. And ofcourse two correction planks, a long one and a small short one.

Started preparing the jogglers... and installed two bow planks, on each side, which are the last in full width. The next planks two close the bow will be a joggler almost identical in each side, which will be projected after the third frame into two thinner planks. Lets see how well it goes tomorrow.

Few planks remain and ofcourse the correction plank(I guess two of them will be needed-a longer and a short one )  to close the hull planking.. Stealers were also used 4 each side at the stern. According to my logbook  I just conclude 100 hours of work.

Now its party time 🥂my grand son is coming to Cyprus and am closing the shipyard down for the time he is staying with grandma and grandpa.  😊🐖🐄🐓🦆

So planking upwards now. Leaving some spaces on the bottom  stern to catch the turn correctly. Ofcourse those will be filled at the end with a few stealers.

Am coming nearer to the end. Though am still stressed with the out coming of the ending at the bow, of the rest of the planks. I guess, if the planks get too thin, then maybe I will have to use a joggler or two

Planking still going on. Not so fast , but ok. The planking from the kiel upwards has   also started. I assume that another 6 strakes in this direction will bring me up to the end stage and I hope very.near to the last plank... to the correction plank.

@cog its a single and thats the trouble. Still I believe it will be manageable using a few drop planks.

Ofcourse the hull at the end is going to be coppered. Still I want the planking to be done correctly.

    Thank you for commenting.

Gun ports finished. The  transom is installed and am ready for the planking of the hull. The instructions of AL show a few very thin planks coming at the bow. Thats something am going to avoid so am not going  to follow the instructions.

Gun ports cutting is progressing. It was important to take care that the ports were marked  in the right position. The correct height from the cannon deck and ofcourse care was also given not to cut any frame.

The cannon deck planks were varnished with a satin matt varnish. The wall's inside planking of the cannon deck is going to follow as soon as all the ports have been cut.

@cog 😂 In the last two weeks I was enjoying the visit of my son and grandson (they live in the UK) and now as they left, it seems good opportunity to change mode through shipbuilding. You see model shipbuilding is an outstanding and enjoyable psychotherapy. 😀

@Dutchman how wonderful to know we have the same love!
The new version Its really a great  kit. Has a good quality of materials and its not bad designed. The frame and the planking could still have been a little better designed (you can see that on the pictures above of @chris wattondesign - thats a design!)And ofcourse the luck of drawings its a minus. Now, I cant tell about the old version. But from pictures am looking to, its not bad either, though the AL people say that its not to be compared with the new one which "is definitely one of their best models ... by far"!

Wish you lots of fan with this wonderful kits. Enjoy our great hobby Dutchman... after all this is another way of sailing.... in the naval history!

Ps. The original colours of the ship are those of the new kit.The old version was wrong in this.

Started today by laying down the keel and building the frame. Easy start  only just  taking care that the sections are fitted to the keel in 90° angle.

@SpyGlass Thank you again! Its actualy hard to come on all this you just explaind if someone hasnt the luck to sail such a sailship.

So, posting a picture of what I have done. Thats the maximum I can succeed by keeping wind into the sails.

    Hi guys,

Long time no see. My professional time was to demanding, so I have been for a long time away. Still I found from time to time some spare hours to keep the shipyard of RC open.

So here are the results, could have been better, but still I am happy with my self, am not a 1st class ship modelist but I feel (after 7 model ships) I came a long way through (considering where I started  some years ago) and thats a nice feeling

all the best to all of you
