Just now received Ed Tostis' book. Looks like the book I'm currently reading about HMS Valkyrie will have to go on hold for a few nights.

I am amaized at the research and prepotory work involved in scratch building. I have just now completed my full set of 1:32 prints for this build. They are printed out on 13 X 19 paper (perfect for this scale) using a Canon IX6820 printer. Since printing a sacrificial set of plans I have cut out the paper and in process of attaching them to wood stock in preparation to cutting them out. Hopefully actual shipbuilding can start this coming week.

I built a rope walk on the MS version to see if rope making is as much fun as it seems.
The question is what size thread in a 3-strand lay will yield what size rope?
Any help will be greatfully accepted.

    Thanks

The result will depend on your thread size. You will need to make up a trial length of line and measure its diameter. This (at scale size), x 3.1416 will give you the line size.

This I did using a Byrnes rope walk.  I will have to play with the setup
to get the warps more acute but that should not affect these data significantly.

The diameter was measured using a lacquered dowel and counting the
closely packed rotations in an inch.

Now to start screwing the beast together. It is massive. The bow, hangars and main deck is down. I will get to the sides and forecastle later later next week then do the filling and sanding. The Rear aircraft deck will go on much much later.

Is it too late in the build to consider fibre optic lighting for your ship? Putting some lights in the hangar will really show off your effort.

I have now finished the interior hangars. A little bit of weathering, rust, grease and drybrushing. Realistically not much will be visible.

I'm at the stage where I really want to start putting the hull together, but I have to paint the interior boat and aircraft hangers first. I have given the 'inside bits' their first primer an base coats. I will weather the interior bits by hand and wait till later until I do the IJN grey bits. That way I can put the sides one and the deck.

You can see in the foreground some perforated steel beams which are required on the rear aircraft deck, which is finally complete (2 weeks from the Ukraine to Oz is pretty good.

I intend to give the base coat 12 hours to dry nice and hard before I do any work on it then I can put the hull together.

Moving along, I have done everything t the deck I can do before painting. There are marked places for the stanchions but I cannot drill them until I do up the hull.

The Forecastle is a very nice mold. As you can see from the AOTS there is not really much to be done here.

The Tamiya capstan and cable holder are fairly bland; and I have replaced them with the Chrysanthemum set which is just lovely.

The front hawser hole is provided by Tamiya but the other brass is all Pontos.

Now it's in its' box until painting time. What next?

Fascinating build, Greg.  I didn't realize that the Yamato had a hanger deck.. almost an aircraft carrier in addition to being a battleship.

Having read the instructions again, I need to add the Type 96 25mm AA gun mounts to the rear flight deck. A little more drilling and as the aft ones overhand the deck, a little bit of filling with card and putty. I have circled the areas that needed work, and after smoothing it out, added some support stanchions.

When I affix it to the hull I will place three more behind each of these but I need them to sit flush on the hull and I will wait for that.

Next will be the railings/runners for the launches.

Not frustrating just part of the build really, I discovered more holes I am supposed to drill out too for the rear gun mounts (the PE instructions are so complex I really really really need to keep reading the kit instructions in conjunction), that also require support struts underneath.

I am still waiting on some perforated beams that will go on the stern of this piece, which in total will probably represent about 3% of the entire build. The volume of work is enormous before I even consider purchasing an airbrush and learning how to use it, then learning how to use it properly and teaching myself proper weathering techniques with it.

My previous 3 kits have been an excellent primer for this one as a lesson in patience.

Use the eye end of a needle, dab some CA on it then into the plastic hole so it forms a glue rim, then use a sharpened pencil to place the metal porthole. If you don't do it this way the metal will stick to the pin as CA bonds to metal very very quickly but it won't stick to the pencil. Does that make sense? I don't use the portholes any more as the portholes only have eyebrows and I wasn't happy with the full circle look. Happy to explain more if required.

Continuing on with the rear flight deck, there are 30 individual rails which consist of 2 pieces each which need t be glued together, making 69 bits to cut off and glue.

Once attached there is more to add, which are non slip lino strips with brass.

    Then there are the turntables.

None of these are glued down yet as I will paint them individually.

I finally managed to drill out holes for the stanchions and now can flip it to add the underside details.

Continuing on withe the upper hull, I tried adding step ladders but not really happy with them so I will only do the one side.

There are about 250 deadlights where the portholes were covered later in the war. The kit just has them as blobs but as usual, there is an aftermarket for them.  About 2 days of painful work.

Defiantly a lot going on in the hangers. I can only imagine what the superstructure would be like. Your a brave man. Nice work. Very neat straight and tidy.

Well, back from holidays, a little bit of work on the old girl today.

You cannot do anything with the Pontos instructions without other reference material. Moving on to the boat hangars, two for the smaller boats and two for the launches. The back deck includes nice bollards, (the holes in the kit need drilling out to widen), rails and equipment for the winch. You can see from the AOTS is is very busy below decks. .

The etch is easy to use just somewhat tiny.

For some reason only known to Pontos they do nothing with the hatches or windlass's. I used North star hatches and a Chrysanthemum windlass. You can see from what is circled what is the kit and what is replaced.

Then to add some realism, I have added some perforated gussets to the small boat hangars. As I intend to park some boat in there not much will be visible.

The larger hangars for the ships large launches are a work in progress but a lot is visible via large doors. I will finish this bit up when I put the hull together. This is all scratch and nothing to do with the kit or the pontos set.

Moving on with the aircraft hangar, the etch is applied, with 1mm railings. Not much of this will be visible.

The lower hull comes in two parts for some unknown reason and has a huge gap. I had to be careful in the use of putty to avoid losing the detail of the armor plates.

You can see the difference in detail between the old and the new tool kit.

One joined the use of a piece of wood to bracket the brass rods that will be used as stands and the addition of the shafts.

Cog, I will only do parts of the old tool up that I need to practice airbrushing on (so I don't completely stuff it up on the newer one), and steal the aircraft and boats from it. I won't be wasting photoetch on it. The old tool is less detailed and an easier kit to construct. I'm about to go away for a week so I am still getting my head around construction. The hull comes in 2 options, waterline or full hull, the lower hull has some major build flaws which I have remedied and will post later today (I'm off to get my boat licence with my 13 year old today). The upper hull comes in about 15 pieces which will require lots of prep before I even think about going for the glue. Again I will do individual stanchions which will require about 1000 0.3mm holes drilled out (I've ordered a 10 pack of drill bits as they break really easily), the aircraft and boat hangars have to also be constructed first which have a lot of etch and scratch building required.

As to putting a crew on board, there were 2000 souls, and to man her would require a LOT of $, North Star makes lovely stuff in 3D print now but if I start where do I stop? If I just put 30 of them on something as massive as this they would look a bit lonely as distract from the overall build I think.
