Well i have settled on my next build, and it is in a different direction than i anticipated. Ive just placed an order for the Real by Dusek. My dad sent me link, knowing some of the characteristics i like and he was right, i loved it immediately. It has some beautiful flowing lines, elements of the old greek briremes and just enough rigging, masts etc... To add to the visual appeal. And to cap it off, Daniel was a pleasure to deal with here on the forum and the kit looks to be of a good quality. I havent found a build log, but would love to see one. I will be doing a detailed build log of la real once ive finished with the surprise build. Any info on the real kit would be appreciated

Bit of a thread derail, but did you know the thunderbird characters were named after some of the original mercury seven?

I can assure it is his first proper build mike (he is my dad) and you arent doing us any favours with your glowing comments hahaha. The aging is really very good in person, after his first practice build (emma berry???) we were all keeping our expectations at a reasonable level lol. This build, particularly the realism of the aging is really cool.

Thanks. It needs some tweeking, shes looking a little wide-eyed lol. But the red white and brown tie in nicely with the boats colours. The light blue just didnt look as good, even though its more accurate.

All glued up and oiled. Also painted figurehead. Its not the tradional colour but i wanted something more colourful and in the same theme as the boat.

Continuing on with the mizzen mast and attaching the lugs i believe they are called. I tapered the insides in order to have the pieces fit snug around the cylindrical mast. And the sanded it down.

Lastly, i will take plenty of pics and document the mast process with lots of steps, both to help me but also because i hope it benefits other newbies. It isnt an intuitive thing if you dont have experience with these things

Ive been steadily working away on the cannons and other details. I finished the rudder which turned out nice. The hinges worked out better than on the launch. I did those by securing the pin first and then adding the other parts. Then i started work on the mizzen mast.

Thanks neptune. It does help. The instructions up to now couldnt be faulted really, but it does take some filling of the gaps for these masts. I think with some advice and research i have figured out enough to press on

Hey guys, Have some more progress and pics to share (have to shrink them so they'll upload to site). I starting the masts as I'm working through some of the other tasks and I can't figure out those instructions for the life of me. IT shows an exploded view of the bottom part of the mast but not really how they all come together to form the mast as a whole. I can't even tell what stops the mid and upper mast from falling right through to the ship deck lol. Any resources or pics you guys could share to get me on track??

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
