Now it was the turn of one of the more complicated parts, which I didn't really want to do - the fashion piece.

To allanyed: Material used for this part is boxwood. The part is made using a cnc milling machine, which enables precise milling from both sides. The procedure can be seen in the photos in post 8.
I continue with the construction of the wing transom.

    Hello everyone.
Last year I successfully completed the construction of the Le Gros Ventre model according to Gerard Delacroix's monograph and I chose L'Amarante as the next model (also according to GD's monograph). I started the construction of the POF at the end of last year and will gradually publish photos from the construction process here.
First, I made a jig for installing the individual frames on the keel and started assembling the keel.

With the beam for the swivels on the port side also installed and the frames made thinner, time to continue working on the transom.
The clinker planking that was previously installed has been removed. And the intention is to install two stern chasers here, the openings of the swivels will then remain empty.

Applying the same number of cannons as the Anthony drawing is not feasible. A nice drawing to show to a king, but not a practical design in reality.
    Several attempts...

And after three attempts it became this.

Finish the holes for the swivels with a beam on top
First i make grooves. This is more work, but positioning the beam correctly is much easier.

And above this beam back to clinker planking. This will provide more strength when the frames are made thinner later.

Yes I'm still here, here, or not very far ! 😂
Soleil Royal will be back soon after I complete a few things on L'Ambitieux.

I had big problems with the input of text and images, which I couldn't get under control. That's why there has been a break here. I will try to continue the construction report of the model that has been further completed in the meantime.

Of course, one cannot expect the noble ladies and gentlemen of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to step over the row benches on which the galley slaves were chained. For this reason, the crew laid planks over the rear row benches, which form a flat surface on both sides of the running track (coursie).

In the photo you can already see the supports for the awning. But its construction is a chapter in itself that I will deal with later.

Mark, it is amazing how complicated this whole flowing structure is.  You are doing a masterful job of drawing out all of the details and sussing through all of the convergent planes.  I’m glad to hear, also, that you are feeling more like yourself these days.

Been a couple weeks since my last update. Was away from the ship yard on a little family vacation. Back to work on deck pieces. Built CPT Cook’s skylight and the two hatch “houses” (I guess).  Not sure of their nautical name.

I have been not completely satisfied with the upper haul staining I did. I did not feel the grain in the planking showed as much as I had hoped. Finally I bit the bullet and decided to sand it down and redo it. After much work I got all stripped. I then stained the upper section again. It will still receive a satin clear top coat and I will genes to touch up the black on the wales. But I am much more pleased. I also added pins to the bottom of all the pieces I have made that will line the rails. The pin will hopefully reinforce the strength of the glue attachment.

Carved and shaped and stained all the wooden Sampson post and rail columns. Different when one decides to build a wooden model vs a plastic is that there are very few molded or preshaped pieces. Most everything, except for very specific pieces, are left to the builder to carve and shape.

Question for you guys that are more nautical than me. The rubbing strakes at the side of the bow. The replica of the Endeavor in Australia shows the strakes as a natural color. The model photo and other builds show them black. A number of people viewing the progress of my model have asked what color I planned to paint the stakes. They assumed since the strakes were a lighter color wood I just had not painted them. I explain that the replica shows them a lighter wood. What is correct?

I have made a great deal of progress since my last update. Stern is complete. I added plastic windows behind the metal frames and drapes. No doubt CPT Cook at times wished for less sun light in the cabin. I made fold down shutters I have yet to decide if I am going to attach them or not. You may notice a little discoloration in the palladium part of the far port window. If you are like me you are sometimes your own worst enemy. I had the stern pretty much finished perfectly. But of course, as I am guilty of doing, I thought one little touch up would make it even better. I decided I needed to touch up a couple spots inside the window frames. And of course I got a small bit of gold paint on the top of the window plastic on that window 😫.  My only recourse was to clean it up best I could. I think a bit got behind the plastic. As I said, sometimes my perfection is my enemy.

As for the carvings surrounding the top grenade, I see them as a continuation of the flames at the top of the grenade, with the addition of the lightning bolts.  The impression these two elements give me is one of the kinetic potentiality of the grenades, and by extension - the ship herself.

The laurel branches are a consistent element of French decor, of this period, symbolizing peace in the wake of Victory.

The available space in the crowning of the amortisement essentially dictates the layout for these branches.  I think that your interpretation of the structure of Berain’s quarter gallery drawing does a nice job of balancing the volumes of the QG around a central axis.  With all of that established, I believe your version of the laurel branches can’t fail to find harmony with the rest of your work.

I think you can shave down this sphere from its backside, incrementally, until it gives you that sense of high relief.  Not quite to the mid-way point, but almost.  As it is now, it is just a little to protuberant.  It would be well, though, to maintain some small trace of the undercut, or “rounding” shadows.

Your execution on all of this is outstanding.  If I could make one small suggestion:  I might consider reducing the almost full-roundness of the globe beneath the wings to maybe slightly less than 3/4 roundness.  To my eye, at least, that detail looks a little too full.

    Hello dear friends,
a friend of mine came home a few days ago and we took some nice shots of L'Ambitieux. It's not as advanced as I hoped to show you, but they are still nice photos so I share them with you. Not that bad for a kit made by Altaya ! The designers of the kit really made a good job.
The goal is to finish the hull of this one before I go back to the Soleil Royal. Let's hope it will be soon...! 😅
Anyway thank you very wuch for the "likes" and the kind words, it means a lot to me.

    Thanks for the reply.
Now I see in my imagination the whole construction of the dome and the decoration on it quite differently than I saw it all before.
I am now more inclined to think that the design should be more flat. And I was trying to make three-dimensional details.
I will now take time to reflect on what to keep and what I would rather redo.
The easiest option is to just remove the ball part of the grenade. And the hardest one is to completely redesign the whole top part. I'll think about it.
    How dramatically things can change.

One handy source is HISmodel, https://www.hismodel.com/. They have complete accessory sets for the Heller Soleil Royal, including Amati rope sets. This is a good place to start. Check around the internet for other model ship suppliers. The ropes you need will depend on how many changes and re-dos you decide to make with your rigging.

This will probably sound absurd - HOWEVER

I personally like to believe that my particular instant obsession with this ship when I was 8 or 9 years old is rooted in the mere possibility of past lives.  I like to think that maybe I served on this ship, or at least saw it with my living eyes.  It is a nice fantasy 😜, and why my wife refers to her as the other woman.
