Pierretessier reacted to Elijah in The Lore Of Ships
Hello! I got a book called The Lore Of Ships as a late Christmas gift and it is very interesting and informative. It has plenty of drawings as well as text, and covers a lot of topics. I will probably add on to this review as I read the book, but I will show you a few things about it now. P.S. Sorry for the bad lighting.

This next page would be great help for building a cross section.

There is so much more in this book and I would greatly recommend this book to anybody wanting to know more about ships or needing a reference on how they are built. This book will be a great help when building.
    Until next time.

Hello again! I haven't been able to get anything done for the past few days, but I plan on doing more modeling this week. On a side note, I will be receiving some late Christmas gifts this weekend. I will most likely receive a Nautical Research Guild membership, and some 1/16" by 1/32" by 24" boxwood strips for planking from Crown Timberyard. I have heard a lot of good things about Crown Timberyard, and look forward to seeing the wood (and using it of course).
    Until next time.

So, this photograph shows the construction prepared well for the planking... those blocks are quite well done for the modelers who have the experience in the single planking method ... The single planking method is the one MarisStella ship modelling school recommends to everyone because it is the way of planking very close to the planking in reality and it saves the time a lot ... Once You get to it, You will be doing it for all times ...
... This construction could have been filled with the blocks between all the bulkheads... that would be recommended to the beginners... The surface, prepared in that way, is actually like the first planking and the planks over it is actually like the second planking ... It is good for acquisition of experience in the single planking method ...

So, avoiding of making the blocks saves the time, but in that case bit more of experience is needed ...

The boat looks really nice, Pierre. I love boats with hard chines like that. We should get Zoran to do a Lightning and Star kit. I'll have to send him a note.

    Cheers,

    Thanks guy's,
Did a bit more work on the tops, ready for rough sanding. I think I'm getting the hang of it. A few pieces on the interior and the floor left. Really enjoying this build looking forward to starting the Santa Maria, hopefully next week.

    Cheers.

    Thanks Don,

Did a second soak and went a bit to far with one and it snapped. Arg!
Anyway back on track, I also took out my heat gun and an Iron my wife had for wood burning. It has a nice large quarter size copper head and I use a dimmer to manage the heat...working good so far.

Here's the hull ready for rough sanding.

It is a slow process but I have not given up. Plank by plank, I think I may need some help with the Santa Maria. Single plank, got to get it right the first time.

These are servo arms from my RC days. The thikness is just perfect to hold the planks flat on the surface. A bit of a complicated setup but I ran out of clamps...lol. Need more clamps...

Did a bit more planking, taking my time, meanwhile thought I would start shaping the 4 pieces for the top gallant rails. Soaked for 1 hr then put them in a jig and added some heat. I'll leave them in the jig overnight and take them out in the morning. Will most likely have to do some fine tuning with more water and heat.

Thanks guy's, although hesitant sometimes I'm really enjoying this so far, nice to have words of encouragement. Looking forward to seeing the new build logs for the SantaMaria, thanks Zoran.
Soon I will be doing the 4 top gallant rails, this is my first edge bend job. I will be doing the soak in water method as described in the manual.

The past week has been spent making up, mounting and rigging the main yard.

The first work was to make the yard. As usual, for me, I started with a dowel, filed the center portion to a square, added strip to the square section to build it up, then filed the built up square section to eight sided. The yard was then tapered by sanding. I then added the sling cleats, yard arm cleats and the PE boom iron yokes the yard arms. Lastly, I made up the inner and outer boom irons from wire and slices of styrene tube. I didn't add the boom irons until after I had added the blocks and rigging lines to the yard. The yard assembly was painted black. The stunsail booms were also made at this time . They are tapered dowel, stained golden oak and finished with wipe-on poly.

I then added the foot ropes and stirrups, the jeer blocks, the topsail sheet blocks, the clew blocks, the yardarm sheet and lift blocks, and the brace pendants and blocks. Next, the line for the jeers, clews and lifts were added. Finally, the parrel was made up and attached at one end. The parrel was made from line, beads for the trucks and ribs made from boxwood strip. Lacking a table saw, I made the ribs by gluing strips together, shaping the whole stack at once, then using isopropyl to separate the pieces. The boom irons and booms were then added.

The yard was then mounted on it's pin on the mast, the parrel was tied off and the rigging of the jeers, lifts and clews was done, but the clews were not tied off. The spritsail braces were also done at this time, but not tied off.

Next will be the wingsail gaff and the main topsail yard.

Had to take a few days shore leave. Back at it this morning. Got the first of the top gallant boards shaped and glued in place.

Next I will install the seat before doing the second top galant, this will make it possible to slide the seat in easily ( Thanks Don, I almost forgot you mentioned to do the seat first.) I will post more images once seat and 2nd row of top gallants are in place..
