The combination blessing & curse of macro photography is making itself known to you!

She's really coming together Greg, the overall shots after the funnels were added are awesome, and then after the vents, even more so!

Now onto the vents. The photos of the ship show ratchets to turn the larger vents into the wind, the kit makes no mention of them. Using some .3mm rod I made up handles for the large vents and stretched sprue at about.1mm for the smaller ones. A bit of black wash then attached. Many more to go on the kit but they do not need these attachments.

Next are the rails which the lifeboat davits will sit on. This was the most difficult part of the build to date. The instructions really are pathetic, leaving me to guess as to what to do, and the photo etch is like working with aluminum foil it is so thin and bends very easily and mistakes are just not retrievable.

    More photo etch done.

The hatch has been replaced as has the ridge around the gun tub and lined with photo etch.

The torpedo rails, I have made 8 brackets and 4 centre supports, and one completed torpedo rail

    Woop!

    Jeers tackle.

Nothing holding any downward tension yet, so the jeers are sort of loose.  Can see the served parrel around the served spreader horse though, now lashed to the yard.

    So...  many...   ropes...

I have no idea how people that do full ship rigs, in much smaller scales than this, don't go completely insane.

Attached the main outhaul, which just dead-ends at the sheave on the boom since I don't have sails, and the boom lift.

Massive mess of ropes and blocks.  New to this mess is the boom lift, and the gaff throat halliard.

Boom lift tackle.  Belaying this off to the cleat on the shroud was..  an interesting experience.

Top from the other side with a better view of the gaff throat halliard.  Slightly out of focus, sorry about that.

Gaff throat halliard tackle and belayed to the Riding Bitt.

Cleaning up all the belayed ends, and adding coils is going to be pretty interesting later on.

    Hi All,

Sorry I have not posted an update for a few days as my internet connection has been down but I am back up and running now.

The forecastle deck planking was completed and sanded. The deck was then marked for tree nailing. Because the planks are only 4mm wide I did experiment with pencil marks to simulate the nails but I did not like the effect so after a bit of effort I was able to produce enough 0.5mm tree nails from a bamboo skewer, I know these are a bit oversize but I could not produce anything smaller in a reliable size or quantity and they should look OK once sanded down, I hope

Well Lextin, it was more of a 'why not' really.  After almost a year of thinking about it, I never really could settle on a name, and for whatever reason just kept coming back to Serenity.  I thought it was sort of a funny name because of the irony of the name as you pointed out, and I really liked Firefly.  I don't have a current S.O., so I didn't really want to just use a random woman's name.  In any case, just said what the heck, and gave her that name since it just kept coming back in my head.

On to an actual update, after two nights of fiddling with little rope and blocks, I managed to complete the rigging of the spreader yard.

The inner blocks and the parrel were the biggest pains, since they are lashed, and the parrel has to be served in place.

    Inner blocks

Blocks, foot ropes, parrel and jeers block on the yard.

All the outer lines on the yard.  In order from inside to outside they are:  Foot ropes, block for topsail sheet, after brace pendant, fore brace pendant, lift.

I haven't done anything on the ship for a few weeks, I've been otherwise occupied. Today I manged to get the mizzen stay made. Notice the difference to how its set up in the AOTS, I won't be fitting the staysail stay as shown in the AOTS either.

So after spending a wonderful long weekend in San Diego enjoying the Festival of Sail, I haven't gotten back to the AVS yet because I had to catch up on work and some other issues.  Today was fix the plumbing in the house day, and then I wasted the rest of the afternoon & evening finally watching the final season of Justified off of Amazon streaming service.

If you don't check the General Nautical Discussion forum - here is a link to the thread I started where I've posted over 100 photo's of the ships from the Festival of Sail - http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/11351-san-diego-festival-of-sail-2015/

I have gotten back into the hobby room and pretty much figured out where I was when I last left off, and am going to try to get re-started on the rigging tomorrow and see what I can get accomplished.

In the mean time, I took a couple pictures of where it was left off prior to the trip.  Seems I managed to skip taking pictures and documenting the last couple of work sessions based on my last update here vs. what it looks like today!

The jib traveler/inhaul arrangement looks much better now I think, and the main boom is mounted with foot-rope and the flag halliard, as well as the traveler on the cabin top (blackened brass) and the boom sheet is rigged.

A little more done today - cutting out all the basic hull bulkheads, filing down the "tabs" and fettling the keel slots.  Caldercraft cut these slots with what I can only describe as "tabs" within the slot to guide you when filing and fitting them - if you just don't quite fully remove them, the bulkheads slide firmly and squarely over the keel.

I have also received a small bundle of Balsa in the post so that I can block in the stem and stern before planking - I think that rather bluff bow will need it if I am to get a fair run of the planks.  Still just dry fitted as there is plenty more to do before gluing anything!

I glued on the amidships structures as the life raft railings will be attached to them. Not happy with the doors, I added aftermarket doors on top of the ones already placed on their so they actually show up. I also added hatches to some of the structures that are in the designs which are not included in the kit. This included a door not mentioned anywhere but the design plans that are the entry to the Coaling hatchways.

Bollards. yet again, do not drink coffee. The smaller ones are about 1mm. If you choose to build this kit please for the love of god do it off the model and not on it like I did. The detail is lovely but just tiny. they have a little bit of gloss from the glue which I will paint over. There are 4 fairleads in the instructions, 5 provided in the kit, which i used to place on the stern which the constructors drawings depict.

Continuing on, note to self, do not drink coffee whilst doing this stuff, the shakes does not do well for alignment at this scale. This is two equipment boxes that sit in front of the first funnel and a skylight. The little resign piece beside the skylight is the Artwox one which is tiny and keeping in line with the rest of the build I used the Eduard one. The larger equipment box is the Eduard one so I used the more petite Artwox one which comes in 2 pieces, being an open ended box and a double door which is attached to the top. It is not mentioned in the instructions at all but appears on the photos and is included in the fret. .

Then finally time to bite the bullet and glue down the deck. The middle and stern deck does not need gluing. Just drops in snugly. The bow deck does need gluing but they are all 99% flush. There is a slight gap where the hull meets the resin part with I will block up with some card. The next step is all the belaying points as the same as a tall ship it will be rear impossible to get to the points when the deck furniture is added.

If you look closely at the bow and stern you will see tiny little holes where I am going to attach individual stanchions and run individual wire rope between them.  The upper railings are just that, railings.

Being a bit lost, I thought that it was time to get serious and just do what I could with the deck and attach it. The ladders are from the Eduard fret and I used little bits of wood on the outside to frame them so they would not drop into the hull.

I've been meandering around particular parts of the ship with no real direction so far. I painted the funnels with Tamiya Spray for the black and Humbrol acrylic for the yellow (Tamiya don't do a matt). Also the multitude of vents in the flat yellow with a red inside.

Picked up a set of cool grays and black Faber Castell Pitt pens and promptly went to my shipyard to color some edges. Thanks for the steer, Slog. They look good. I touched up all the parts I had previously used the Chartpak pens on.

Continued gluing up the hull skins and still puzzling over the stern pieces. I think I have a fix, but I'm going to try it with some re-positional glue first.

Also began the paddle wheel housings.
    Paddle housing support

Paddle wheel attachment point, bottom of support

    Exterior paddle housing.

The white semi-circle gets another overlay, but its both an inside and outside cut. I'm looking for a good, smooth semicircle here, with a flat at the top of the paddle. There will be an observation platform perched on top of each paddle wheel housing. The red 52 on the housing is the location for a 3 piece bump-out, glued over that spot. The instructions aren't text, just pictures with numbers and arrows pointing in approximate locations.

    Thanks for reading.

    Hi Ken,

I have quietly been following your build and enjoying your progress.

I thought I might stick my oar in now since the topic of edge colouring has come up.

I have never quite been satisfied with my edge colouring having tried, acrylic and enamel paints, as well as water colour 'blocks' and water colour pencils but have found a range of Faber Castell Pitt (PITT?) artist pens which have came very close to meeting my needs.

The grays also come in cool and warm tones but the good thing is there is very little to no bleeding into the paper.  I found using the very tip (less ink) and moving across quite quickly applies just the right amount.

A lighter colour can be applied a couple of times to darken the edges.  Also if a perfect colour can't been matched, the general consensus from what I can gather is the edge should be darker than the main part.  The eye accepts it easier rather than a lighter edge.

I covered the PITT pens somewhat in my Bismarck card build log.  I found good matches for the different grays, a green and a brown.

    Cheers
    Slog

    Hi All,

The deck planking has begun. I have decided on a four butt shift for the forecastle deck and the deck will be tree nailed. After marking the centre line and the lines for the shift pattern the first planks were laid. Please note there is no shift pattern in between the gratings as the small distance between them would mean cutting a lot of very short planks . So the pattern will start with the first plank outside the grating.

I have also added a binding strake next to this plank on each side. these were made from wider stock than the supplied deck  planks of 4 x 0.5mm and a 5 x 1mm plank was used, these will be sanded down to 0.5mm when the deck planking is completed. A scarf joint was used to join them.

It was always going to be a slow start - the first two pieces dry joined.  I found filing was the easiest way of getting rid of the "lumps" after cutting the parts out - I have a few new files that I reserve for woodwork.  In the small scales that we work in they are quite useful tools even if they are "wrong".

Spent half an hour this evening poking the dust out from the cuts in this sheet of walnut.  I'm not sure which I prefer - the dust from a milled model or the burnt edges (and subsequent sanding) for a laser cut one.
