New beams have been bent and temporary installed on x-section for marking.
Drilled through frames and used straight pins to hold beams....will be planked over later to cover holes
Layed out most of the cross beams while main beams were on the x-section. May be hard to see the lines
Started cutting the cross beams to length..used scrap wood on miter to prevent any tear out when cutting to length..
Decide to use clamps to hold wood while cutting....[to close to moving blade for my fingers]
Here is my set up......maybe it may help someone later on. Pictures should explaing
Back to the shop for more sawdust

Man, we have to watch those dockyard blokes all the time. I almost have a permanent cloud of blue smoke over my head with my crew but then as you I press on.

Well I've installed the ladders and have started working on the case.
Here are the ladders,
The base is made out of oak. I used the full sized table saw to cut the recess for the plexi cover.
And here is the cover in place.
As I said before the cover was purchased on line as I did not feel comfortable making it on my own. (AKA Lazy)
Gotta finish up the case, just a few fiddly things to do and clean her up and we should be done.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement gents. Go slow is the word for the crew today. Don't want to have to cane anyone for being over zealous with the sanding.

All the filler blocks, sills and lintels are now in so tomorrow will be the moment of truth as I start the fairing in. You may notice that all the filler blocks are not cherry as I decided to use up some of the frame spacing beams that were spruce.

Antony.....thank you also for the nice comment and looking in. This is my first scratch build {any build actually...only about a fourth of the way through the Sultana kit from Model Expo}
Could not kit into the "kit" for some reason. may return to it later.
I might just leave part of the frames exposed....like you said "pulls much more interest into the model"
Since I will be try to do the deck beams of the model before installing, decided to go ahead and bend the camber into the beams.
Set up my old cake pan I use for steaming wood that I need. brought it up to a low boil and let simmer for about 30 minutes with a weight to keep them covered in water
Then but them into a jig to try for at least 24 to 36 hours, to make sure they are dried enough and hold their camber.
While these are drying will work on some other thing on the model

The outer hull is now complete with the addition of the molding, trim, fenders and steps. The molding is pear, made of two rounded and laminated pieces, rather than using a scraper on a single piece. The trim piece at the top is a piece of ebony. I chose to do this rather than another pear molding as a matter of artistic license. The fenders are cut from boxwood and sanded to shape. The steps are also boxwood and were filed to shape. Unlike some others, I chose to mount the fenders first and then added the molding and trim in pieces to fit. I just find it easier to get tight fits this way, rather than first mounting the moldings in one piece and trying to notch them perfectly.
It's now time to do the hatches, bitts and guns.

Slipped my ground tackle yesterday and headed for the shoals again. I decided to make up another set of beam clamps to assist in the installation of the upper frame filler blocks and gun port lintels today. After applying the new set of clamps it soon became apparent that I had been careless in leveling the starboard side gun port sills yesterday. So, tomorrow out they come for a re-install. Wish I had had the extra set of beam clamps handy for the sill installation. Well, I do now.
Going to make up another set of beam clamps tomorrow also. Finding that they have a number of uses.

Rusty and Paddy...thanks for looking in and the nice comments...
Was able to get the treenails done in the lower planks and 1 side sanded....
I am satisfied with they way they have turned out..think will look better once the clear coat "oil" is applied
Before moving on decided to fair the out side before to mush was in the way on the inside. Was a little worried about the way I decided to do this, but figured the worst
that could happen is that is falls apart and I start over. But it held up really well
Used my 5" orbital sander starting with a 40 gritt and moving up to a 220 gritt.
Done this outside using my porch railing and a old pillow
Once I got up to the 220 gritt I moved it to my leg for better control
So here is where it stands as of now
Have not yet decided on whether I will leave any of the framing exposed or plank the whole outside. Framing just doesn't look that good to me and I might just cover up the mess.
Time to look at the prints will be starting the lower deck framing next.

Here is a few pictures of my meager progress for the month...Hopefully will have more time here soon to devote to the build.
Using an old marking gauge I found in my pile of junk to lay out the line for the treenails. Originaly had a metal point to scratch the line but remove it drill the hole bigger
and is using a pencil. Seems to work rather well.
After marking use a sharp point to mark the hole locations so the bit will not wander.
I found the cutting the treenails into short lengths instead of using one long and cutting each time it is inserted into the wood was easier for me. This gave me a small
pile to work from.
Put a few at a time next to where I am working so I don't have to hunt for them
Once I get a few more in and some sanding done will post some more pictures. So back to the shop while I have time.
Hopefully will not be as long between post next time.

Hi Paddy
Full of mistakes but I am learning.
Used flattened electrical conduit wire for the brackets. Tried silver soldering with a blowpipe but gave it up. Eventually settled for soft solder and soldering iron. Seems to be holding up well. Epoxy did not work with te copper. CA seems to do the job.
Thr grating was un uphill battle. I eventually built a mini saw fro a CD Rom case and my Dremel ( Got he idea from Thanasis. After a few teething troubles I got a reasonable grating. Would like the grooves a shade wider but was limited to using 2 dremel blades.
The cannon is just fixed temporarily.
Getting close to the end of the build now and really enjoyed it. Might just tackle the full build.

Well I’ve started to make the ladders. I transferred the lines from the
plans to the wood, cut the slots for the treads with the table saw and
then cut the side pieces to the angle dictated on the plans remembering
to make a mirror of each one cut out.
Hopefully I’ll assemble them today.

Filler blocks under the wale area have been installed. I’ll wait for overnight drying of the glue before starting on installing the gunport sills, lintels and some filler at the top of the frames.

Well the other gangway has been installed and the skid beams added.
Gotta make some ladders and the top rails then a case and I should be
wrapping her up by next weekend. Just in time for the hectic end of August
when I don’t have time for any modeling.

I have now planked and treenailed the upper hull exterior. The planking is boxwood. In doing the planking, I made slight adjustments to create the rebate for the gangways. After completing this work, I applied a coat of Wipe-on Poly finish to the entire outer hull. The remaining work on the outer hull will consist of adding the moldings and trim, the fenders and the steps. That work is now underway.

I like working with and the look of the cherry wood too. Some time back I did a test of Watco Danish Oil natural on the cherry and really liked the finish. If you decided to change to cherry wood on the frames I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Something I think will help with the alignment clamps I’m going to make for installing the permanent cherry spacer blocks will be a set of temporary spreader bars for the top of the frames. If you look close at the top of the last frame I think you can see what I'm thinking.
Anyway, a new segment of the construction is about to get underway and I’m looking forward to it. A salute to the dockyard blokes for hanging in there.

Hi Russ,
I wish I could take credit for great planning, but it looked ok and was what I had on hand.
Sometimes it just works out ok in the end.
I am using holly to make the gangways. I measured the length and glued them together
and then used a dremel drum sander to rough in the shape and sandpaper to finish it.
I used a little strange way to make the trim molding. It’s made out of pear. I cut the straight
top piece and then traced the shape for the two curves, cut it out and sanded it to shape. I
wasn’t having a lot of luck making individual pieces to fit the curve and for some reason a
whole piece was easier. Not the strangest thing I’ve done.
And here is the first one in place.
I'm getting there slow but sure.

Small update...with summer not much time to work on the cross section.....just a little at a time
Since I decided to go with cherry for the treenail.....don't know if this was a good idea or a really stupid one
Got down to making me some
First I had to make a zero clearance insert for my saw...did not have any aluminium or plastic so I used cherry
ripped some cherry strips down to about .040 square
Then started pulling them through my draw plate. Taking them down to about .023 in size. This is smaller in scale than it should be at 1:32 but with them
be so much darker than the maple the will not look like the section has a bad case of the measles....I hope
So now it is time to set back turn on the music and PULL for awhile

I'm almost at the point on the build where I will be making the MainSail Top Bitts and was wondering if the sheaves were made of brass or wood. I see on some models it looks like wood has been used for the sheaves, but in other models brass has been used for the sheaves. Maybe it's my eyes, but if brass was used, then how did they mount them inside the post? Am I wrong? I don't see anything in the pdf files on the MainSail Top Bitts that mention brass. Can someone give me some guidance on how to make them. Thanks
