herask got a reaction from Archi in Yet Another Pandora 3D build
making progress in the hold area. almost done, just a few things left to take care of. right now, I'm concentrating only on construction. fitting out the space will come after I finish the hull... or in between burn outs, lol...
and another walkthrough video...

fore cant frames done, onto the square frames...

ok, this took a while, mainly because I deleted windows from my computer and installed Linux. not without issues, but I'm up and running again and have finished aft cant frames...

Nate, thank you for the illustration, this makes things a lot clearer and a lot more sense that what I had in mind. my version is simplified (or unnecessary complicated, depends on one's view). your way is actually a lot better and now I'll have to rework those frames. good thing I'm reworking cant frames anyway (that's a as far as I got), so no biggie. thank you again...
just one more question. was raising wood continuous like mine or did it have scores for frames?

But where's the nanite foliage, the voxel rendering of every single splinter of wood? Where's the cloth-on-cloth chaos simulations and the over 300 NPC's in each frame?
4/10 - Disappointing.
🤣🤣😋

This is so much fun to watch. It really makes you feel like you are at the actual shipyard. Amazing work.

Denis, it is just a little rain, nothing to cry over - get your men back! 😄
Very nice rendering and continuation.

finally, the frames are done. like Nate said, interesting little buggers to make, they were nice exercise in patience for a lot of things to come, lol... oh, and it was really bad weather today, so my workers split home earlier again. it's like they're actively avoiding to be photographed...

Ahh Pandora's framework: it's been so much fun /s.
Kinda like when the progress bar shoots up to 90% and completely stalls

hello, guys. not much progress this time. fore square frames up to dead flat are done... and I've removed support rods, they were starting to get in the way and were a pain to setup. good thing digital frames can stand on their own... 😁

herask reacted to willard48 in HMS Anson (1781) in Blender
Hello all!
This is my first ship building project in 3D (of many, I hope!), as well as my first post on this forum. I've always been very interested in the third rate ship of the line, and with the abundance of plans for the Intrepid class I decided to model the HMS Anson, in her pre-razee 64 gun configuration. While I am not modeling the frames behind the hull planking and making it as they were built in real life (though I have some seen some projects like that here, amazing! Perhaps for another project I will attempt that.), I am going for accuracy in every other area, but just not modeling things that will not be visible. I could add the framing later, however.
I am currently on my second go at this model. I find I learn new things and better methods along the way, and I have greatly improved the process and accuracy of my build. As of now, all the framing is in place, though I need the lower supports on the main gundeck. Now going through the "detail" interior pass. The exterior needs a pass as well, with the sheaves in the hull added, netting, further detail on the beakhead, figurehead, and stern gallery.
The plans I am utilizing are from Wikimedia Commons, with better looks at interiors from HMS Leopard (1790) cutaways. The configuration I am going for includes the higher walls on the quarterdeck and the chequer pattern as seen on Agamemnon, using the latest ochre from Victory.
I'll be posting more updates along the way! I've attached some progress pictures below, including the materials I created in Substance Painter on my first attempt, which I can thankfully reuse, though they need improvement. Haven't really focused on the material/render too much, so I'll be improving those and making them more photoreal later on down the road.

Framing update: prepping for the aft cant frames. Working on the deadwood pieces. Getting the stepping cuts to precisely follow the bearding line has been a challenge. Another challenge is that the siding (room and space) calls for aft cant frames at 10 inches, but that is a measure of the outboard siding. Inboard of the stepped scarf - where the frames abutt the deadwood - is actually smaller, which is why the second frame in each pair on each step appears narrower than the forward partner. The width of the aft frame is not even consistent, rather, it is a mathematical function of the angle.
Translated into English... Yuck! Super slow-going, but I hope my attention to detail will be worth it in the end...

ok, here you can see a NURBS curve, and bellow is a simple vertex extruded edge with subdivision modifier lvl4.
the result is almost the same, yet allows for more freedom than CAD program. at least for me. I like pushing vertices around, although the result might not be the perfect smooth shape as with CAD, but that's OK, I'm not designing mechanical device, I'm merely making a visualization of one...
here you can see the ship's hull which I duplicated and then cut out frames, which I then shrinkwrap back on the first hull shell to keep the shape of all the frames consistent:

I thought of making the hull shell in Fusion 360 or Plasticity, but that involves using one more software, learning user interface, learning CAD workflow, import export...
The truth is, as I grow older I'm less and less inclined to bother myself with unnecessary cr... er, stuff. so I kept things simple and did everything within blender... great piece of software that one... 😁
