I have started replacing the rigging and got the main sail up  slow and steady

She is coming together nicely I think . I enjoyed building the longboat kit I purchased from model Shipway and it was a challenge , that being said ... building it from scratch was  very challenging and a bit of a test to see if I could actually build a boat from scratch before I moved on to something bigger. Doing this longboat has giving me the confidence that I might be able to build my next project the Triton Cross Section.

I applied the clear coat and and it looks good on the wood but did not expect it to ruin the rigging . It formed crystals on the rigging so no I will have to attempt to clean it off or just re rig .

as as for the sails it’s a slow process but I’m getting there .it will give me time to ponder on the rigging tragedy I am getting thru this final leg of the build at a snail 🐌 pace . I’m getting anxious to start the Triton Cross Section

    Hello fellow MSW members
i haven’t posted in a week , not because I haven’t been working in the shipyard but because what I was working on was kicking my butt !So I thought I’d give a update .I have finished the rigging  and started on the sails  and I quickly found out that my sewing is the most horrid thing I had ever laid eyes on ! I have posted pictures of what I’m happy with after six or seven attempts  . I still have plenty opportunity to screw these up as I still want to add a black seam of thread around the sails and make the anchoring points . I plan on attempting this process today after I apply a coat of clear  to the boat I will begin my sewing nightmare again lol

I made the rudder today, I used a spare I had from the kit version of this boat as a template I started by tracing the template then sanding and filing until I got it to match

Then I mounted the rudder and got the stays rigged

next I will rig the boom and gaff and start to mock up the sails. I have read that there are a couple different rigging plans for the sails   One for a short gaff and one for the gaff in the plans I used for this build. I will do a bit more research on this before I commit to either way.not that I have kept the build period correct using the colored rigging on the stays.

I made the dead eyes and chain plates, not the best but if I never have to make dead eyes this small again it will be to soon  I needed  9 total but I bet I made 20 and got 9 semi successful ones out of them . I started with a small square and cut out the general shape then finished them with sanding and filing.

Then I used a small brass nail " the same diameter of the nails I will use to mount them once there done  "with the head cut of to form the 1.5 " long piece of 28 gauge wire to make my chain plates .

I then twisted th wire until the desired length and added the dead eyes using a drop of glue to secure  them into the chain plates.

i also finished the gaff and applied the paint . I used white and black to accent pieces of the boat . Trying to leave as much of the natural teak showing . I plan on using a two part clear coat used on autos for the final finish

i am pretty pleased with the way she is looking for my first scratch build model

I made the bow spirit, and almost finished gaff last night .

But with all the sanding I did yesterday . I woke up this morning with a nasty rash between my fingers 😲 Apparently I bit to much of the oil from the wood sat a tad to long on my unprotected skin . So here is a P.S.A. ..... when working with teak be sure to use a good respirator and cover up as much as you can stand  lol 😂

I got the mast and mast step done . I had a scrap piece of teak that I had broken earlier in the project so I used that to make the mast . I used my pocket knife to get the general shape and size I was looking for then finished it if by hand using 120 grit sand paper and a couple hours of sanding. The teak is very hard and takes time to sand . I guess I could have used power tools but it was a nice day to sit outside and whittle up a mast .

I got the windlass done ,I started with a piece of 1"x5/8"  teak I cut out a 1/2" x1/2 " x 2" piece then cut that  in half and then cut those in half to give me 4 -1/4"x1/4  x2" pieces I then sanded and file one of those pieces to form the windlass . I then used a1/32 drill bit to drill through the square parts near the ends for the handles.to square up the holes I used the end of my tweezers that I modified a bit . For the handles I split another 1/4 " piece  again down both sides to give me 1/8" pieces to play with with a bit of sanding and filing I got a decent shape . I used a couple pieces of 22 gauge wire inserted in wholes drilled into the end of the windlass to hold the unit to the boat . The wire slides into. Corresponding wholes that I drilled into the risers.

Given the habit of kit makers, you probably have the wood in the right places then.. light colored decks and darker hulls.   We all get gaps in planking at some time so just sand away the deck to get it smooth.  Do NOT vacuum or dispose of the sawdust.   Mix that with a 50/50 mixture of glue and water and apply as filler between the planks.  Let dry and sand again.   Repeat as needed.

I got 2 sets for myself and another 2 for a buddy.  I decided that I needed to line the drawers with felt as the wood just seemed to be an unfinished storage system - not knocking the quality or anything I just like my tools store neatly.  So I went to the local Hobby Lobby with my 40% discount coupon (never go there w/o the coupon) and got some self-adhesive felt sheets.

The first photo shows the drawer on the right as it comes with the 4 dividers in place.  They are securely glued in place but only along their bottom edge and were easily loosened up with a few taps from a jewelers brass hammer and removed and set aside.  The felt was trimmed to size and adhered to the drawer bottoms.  With the thin felt the dividers still fit in place w/o interfering with the drawer closing.  I set all of the dividers aside for now as I don't think I will be using many of them if any.

Glad I got these - thanks for the heads up they are well worth the $$.

    Kurt
