You know I just thought about the Billet Head. Mine was very poorly cast and I really am not pleased with it. I'm not going to change it since I''m finished, but it could have been a lot better. I like your idea about carving it - you should have good results. It will be interesting to see your results.

Hi Mike, she's off to a great start. To answer your question, seems like I just measured the height of the rail from the plankshear for the stanchions, and then the same for the Knight heads. The Profile drawing on Sheet 2 shows a scale drawing and you can take that measurement right off the plans. It should be right on the mark. The stanchions were a little on the long side so that they would move up or down to match up with the rail. The Knight head as well as a couple of stanchions are cut into the filler blocks and then trimmed. Hope this helps, you can probably see this in my pictures.

Well, my belt sander came in Friday and I've completed the base, mounted the ship to it, and I have a 3/16" scale Sperm Whale that I sculpted to go alongside the ship along with a fully fitted out whaleboat complete with sails. the whale has been harpooned and lanced and tied alongside. I am now officially finished. The base is a slab of wood cut from the Bowsprit of the real Morgan, obtained from the Dupont Preservation Shipyard, Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT., rough finished and Satin Varnished to protect it.

    I'M DONE!

Anyone interested on the steps to accomplish this can find all the details in my website BUILD LOG - PART VI at the bottom of the log as well as a lot of photographs.

THANKS GUYS - IT'S BEEN FUN!!!

I've added an engraved nameplate to finish things off. I represent the engraver, so anyone with custom needs let me know.

I dug the wood slab for the base out of the garage and photographed it. It is a slab cut from the side of the restored Morgan's Bowsprit. The photos show top, bottom and roughcut Bowsprit from the Dupont Shipyard in Mystic, Ct. This is not finished yet and will be a couple of weeks yet. I have to get a belt sander for finishing it. It is 57"x15"x2". My understanding is that the tree this was cut from was a knocked down tree during Hurricane Katrina in '05 and given to Mystic Seaport to use on the restoration and preserve a 100+ year old tree. Quite a few truckloads of trees came to Mystic.

I almost forgot the Flags....Got them done today. The American Flag w/26 stars and the J&R Wing Co Flag (they owned the ship for over 50 years) on the Main Mast. Now she's done...I also fixed my scratch on the hull. The flags have a piece of aluminum foil inside them and I am going to attempt to gets some furls in them hoping the foil will hold them in place???? They were tricky to make since they are not part of the kit.

    THE MORGAN IS COMPLETED!!

today, I finished the Cutting In Stage and got the boats mounted to the ship. I have a couple of touch ups to do, as well as the base, but the model is completed. Tomorrow, hopefully if the weather cooperates I'll take her outside and take some natural light pictures. All details on the whaleboats is on my website, but here are some overall pictures. I can't believe she's finished....April '13 got started. In shock - not real yet! .lol

Managed to get the Fore Mast Braces completed, and moved to the Main Mast Braces. Finished the Main Topgallant Yard Braces. This leaves three sets of Main Mast Braces to complete the Running Rigging. This then leaves the Cutting in Stage and rigging the whaleboats to the Davits to finish up. Based on how I've been progressing, the Braces should be finished tomorrow, with the rest in the next few days.

Details are on my website for those interested.

Hi Larry, she's looking great, good to see you back at it.  Mine's going to slow down at this point, we're leaving in a day or two on our annual RV trip.  Going east again to Florida then up to Maine. I'm taking the model with me and going to work on small stuff, carrondades and such.  I'll be watching how you're doing along the way.

Hello Mike, I just found your log. Very nice job. I'm thinking this might be my next build since I've finished my Charles W Morgan. Interesting build order. What part of Texas? I'm on lake Conroe. I visited the Niagara back in July and tried to thoroughly photograph her since I plan to build her. I have a section devoted to those photographs on my website. Let me know if you need anything specific. I have been aboard her twice. Inf the museum there are some nice models, one is 1/2" scale. I'm enjoying reading your log and will follow along on your log.

Hello Larry, good to hear you're still here.  I've started my Niagara a couple of weeks ago and have a website for it, so I'm sure I'll be in touch for questions.  I just finished the Stern Bulkhead Q going from there.  Sorry to hear about everyone's health issues...we've got our own going on here.....welcome back
