  1. I can't find a website for the manufacturer or a US outlet. This is a website that sells them and they are available from other places like ebay and Amazon. https://www.teslastrings.com/en/m/luban
  2. I am always looking for wood from the area around me for model building. There are lots of articles and commentary about the "best" wood for modeling but the discussion seems to center the woods like Box, Cherry, Walnut, etc. There are a lot of different wood types out there and I think many that we don't think of as model building wood will work just fine. Bottom line is that any wood that is stable and workable will do. If a model is to be painted grain is not really an issue. If a model is going to be left unpainted there are many woods that will look good either with or without staining. Just my .02, please feel free to let me know what you think on this subject.
  3. Anyone have experiance with Luban Tools? Pictures look great but they are expensive.
  4. Aliexpress has the drill press for ~$50.
  5. Not trying to hijack this thread but I do have a serious (maybe dumb) question about these kits. How does one tell the difference between v.1, v.2 and v.3 kits?
  6. I have several pieces of wood from a Gardenia bush that I pruned awhile back. Diameter is small with the larges I have being about 2" thick and very few of the pieces are straight for more than 5-6 inches. That said the wood is great. Very light colored with a straight grain and fairly hard. I am going to try making some parts from it and see how it works out. Anyone here tried using gardenia wood?
  7. Considering the missing parts and parts that don't fit right you should contact Pavel and let him know about it. I know that some of his earlier models had issues that were corrected in later editions.
  8. A quick search brings up a lot of different small drill presses. You might want to expand your search beyond Proxxon and Microlux. They are good products but I think cost a lot more than the benefits they provide.
  9. You might want to check out something larger than the mini drill presses that have been mentioned so far. This one https://www.amazon.com/WEN-4208T-2-3-Amp-5-Speed-Benchtop/dp/B08ZVT5JKC?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.-0oQbgDoyMKeUdrGAsEAIVg5RJz0T9P0iiEijuk1RN8lWGjsBcJh2U4Tj6ilqA1qMpFjjGhil9rkAX4vz_RMn111nHFcLRPQJX9Zp-IKcEzEEmpPOjsMZw1FC4g2kMTs-7rQj2VNkkmSfNdUnwPZbTfhKqXB0IiYQC-fJ1X9MhYUUXlSnz6bWEfuCQtjEdKILhvdMZzpZnuokAT3oJg-eBh-4_Uy_XvA9z_ye3RPNoUPOpDZ47Pu7QN66DC97G8SqQJqpmXYsMBLpUIo0D3N8lxJSbggKBn9XI_9RSlirkM266Qz_UwFMnZb_8b2oYIhJBPhBKuxoY-z8sFaJ4kgY8v0pv9mQqZgMOdIqqZDUpGKPj9KCdK6j_BhPJu4V7O0CrJlTZCAwMbubjHaI-09m60bIwE3rqG2KswEBwv1Hk0L-BjBQle2o28rBCwbb-_Z.b8Um8MN7cuRy2k2EcsFJPq8GjBdDKTtsRIK3tX2mtQo&dib_tag=se&keywords=mini%2Bdrill%2Bpress&qid=1736103704&sr=8-10&th=1 on Amazon has more power, stroke length and versatility than smaller ones and only takes up a small footprint on your bench. I have one and it works very well.
  10. New to me at least. Stainless steel and the grip is pretty strong. sizes available from 2" to 5". I find them useful for model building. I bought them off of aliexpress but they can also be found on Amazon.

  13. As requested here is the amazon page with the light on it.
  14. Ordered this from Amazon and am very pleased with it. Best work light I have found for model building.
  15. I have one from a different vendor. Same machine, different label. Works well and I have had no issues with it over the last 5 years.
  16. Haven't tried using clear coat. I let them age for a couple days before I try to handle them.
  17. I find that sanding and etching the parts with white vinegar then washing the parts in soapy water, rinsing in clean water followed by dipping in acetone then a rinse in running water as a prep works best for me. Your mileage may vary.
  18. I have a couple of kits in my stash and have to agree the instructions are not great. However it seems the larger kits are somewhat better. These kits are for people that have built several kits and are familiar with what goes where. Just start it and ask questions on MSW when you run into a problem.
  19. Anyone know what happened to Arkit and Dikar models? Were they taken over by other companies or just closed up shop and disappeared?
  20. You might want to take a look at brush plating. Seems to be the simplest method to do small parts. Caswell is the most common one but there are other sellers out there. https://caswellplating.com/electroplating-anodizing/brush-plating-products.html
  21. Depends on what you actually need the saw for. If you just need it to cut strips off of billets of wood and then use the thickness sander to bring to final dimensions any reasonably accurate saw will work. I have experience with the old Dremel table saw, the Micromark saw, old Craftman saws and a couple of off brand hobby saws. The Dremel table saw is pretty good if you update it with some add on that are available on line. The Micromark is good out of the box. Best saw I have for ripping planks is an old 8" saw from Sears. Sold under the Craftsman name but actually manufactured by the Seeley company. Cast iron and steel with a strong motor. Very solid and accurate with a good blade. I prefer a hollow ground planer blade for the best results. If the saw is in good shape you can get 1/32" strips consistently. I see them on ebay regularly for $50 to $200.
  22. Anyone know if Model Shipways is going to issue a plank on bulkhead kit for the Sultana? They seem to be do that to all their solid hull kits.
  23. A couple of mini lathes for sale on eBay. These are not mine, just passing along the info for anyone that is interested. https://www.ebay.com/itm/226173908145?itmmeta=01HZWW0J1MQBXTCHEG1BRE4FK0&hash=item34a903f4b1:g:fTcAAOSw0ORmXJz9&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAAwLG%2BNfqUNjHSkM7%2BkY9JjK57%2BZtnZVXMIDpmA8JgrbxS6eONLETJ8UXVyfiJZZXImUoLRVPMNN%2F5NhYf%2B%2B5AqibV16veAH3ocRDWhUUzwV9hHxKBN4NQGn9xFwD8FVREAAIaEpE8MbmJ9BlZsB5zi6Pw1U%2BG7Rz97RLrRR3KNKMyMP%2BYbCQ7aCaa0xZpcTIPMwYI6s1i85%2FDppqqT%2BHRgQzNutBoIR2ZHMEFMtVuu8jSJoXBOk2TD8iIeY1ot3H5Nw%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR4qhgpz_Yw https://www.ebay.com/itm/285893211189
  24. Did a bit of web crawling and found that the Jarmac is available from a number of vendors. Don't know if it is still being manufactured but seems to be plenty available. This one seems to be the "deluxe" version. Tiny motor but apparently fairly reliable. Motor can be upgraded with a new motor with the same form factor but twice the power. Going to mess around with it a bit and then pass it along.
