After considering several methods of creating the Great Cabin floor, I decided to use Chuck's method.  In my experience, doing so is never a bad idea!

The floor will be made from walnut and boxwood 3/16 x 1/32" strips.  A paper template of the area to be covered was made and a piece of 6 x 6 x 1/32" plywood was used as the base.  First, the strips were cut to approximate length and glued to the plywood base:

The curvature you see is created by the camera.  Next, a jig was made in order to create 3/16" strips to be cut with an Exacto blade:

The individual strips were then cut:

The strips were offset and then edge glued together to create the pattern:

The paper pattern was then used to cut and sand the floor for a tight fit.  Here's what we got:

Finally, just some overall shots.  The floor was finished with natural stain, WOP for protection and Dullcoat to give a flat finish:

Although most of the floor will be covered by the (open) upper decking and deck beams, I think we have a nice overall detail.  I'm pleased

Will be closing the shop for the upcoming Holiday festivities (Happy Independence Day to all of my fellow Americans).  When we return, the strains of DECK PLANKING music will be heard in the Rockies.

Oh, we have just passed 600 hours into the build.

I finished the long boat oars. I made 14 of them and then picked the best 8. I had a hard time making them all look the same.

I wanted to post these photos of my hull planks since the old ones seem to have disappeared from our website. I plan on keeping this log for future reference if I ever finish it.

    Lawrence,
Thanks for those photos. I'm going to glue as much wood on the long boat as I can. I've already made the floor grate.

Rich, at that scale I would make a small jig. take a small strip of wood and mark out the distance you need.  Then take to pins or brass nails and put them through the distance.  The run it down the part as if you were using a compass.  The points from the pins will make a small divit in the wood and act as a guide.

Sjors........the only way you can hide a hull that big.........is if you stood it on it's stern and put a lamp shade over the bow! she gave you the 'look'........didn't she? all admirals have that look......my admiral has one that'll chill me to the bone!

you two have a good time!

Rich, looks good. What was your final method for drilling your holes on he rails? It looks like you got them pretty straight.

FWIW, I agree, I've worked with fiberglass in the past and it's not great for detailed applications. The fibers are actually quite long and large, you can use finer material but it would probably get messy. Anyhow, by the time you get a layer of resin mixed and applied thick enough to hide the fibers you will end up with a 2-4mm thick coat. I would like to see what you end up doing if you end up using wood filler.

Filling the grain on the fiber glass and sanding that back will be far more difficult than working the wood. Get some good light wood filler and work that down and use the good auto primer. Bill

If you had an x y table you could use that. What I have done is make a fixture to hold the part and marked out the holes with an awl or a pin. This made a spot that would hold the drill bit. Then I could drill out the part without the bit skipping.

Hello All Thought I would sit down tonight and post and update from the No 10 Ship yard,

Thank you all for comments and likes, very appreciated.

I have installed the rework of the inner gun port (one side, atm) and lined the gun ports and slowly working my way up with the 2nd layer of planking,

I have decided to line the rest of the gun ports just to break up the build for now. I also have noticed that i need to cut out 2 gun ports on the bow

Gun ports are are 2x per night

    Cheers

I chose Constructo because I wanted a natural wood finish so all the difficult woodworking could be seen. It's a work of art as well as a piece of history. I took great care when planking the hull to avoid large patches of filler just so the hull would invite touching that beautiful wood. That's what I have so it would kill me  to paint it.

Yes, we must be a bit daft spending inordinate amounts of time on things that will later be mostly concealed.....but we know they're there.

Now, where do I sign for the exchange of bricks for gun carraiges  ?

    Hi Ben,

    Things happened.
But I'm lucky that I have to use copper tiles and paint.
So with a little bit of sanding you don't see a thing about it.
But the wood is really bad quality.
A little bit of shame for Caldercraft.
For the rest it is a great kit !
I know for now that my next build ( kuch kuch ) wil be also from Caldercraft !
And that should be the last kit build......
I can not let Anja doing scratch and I stay with kits.....

I'm still working on the skylight. I treated the windows as if only a dim light would be coming from below decks. It would be muted with tones of brown with only a hint of lightness. I tried shades of blue like the sky, but it looked awful. I still have to work on the trim. At least I got he shape okay.

The brick platform for the stove has been completed.

I decided to create a base for the (individual) bricks inside the coaming.  The base is 1/32" balsa sheet, painted grey:

3/32 x 1/32" planks were then painted two colors and cut into 'bricks' as seen below:

The ends of the faux bricks were touched up and then laid individually:

It's not perfect,  but I'm pleased.  About 60% of the platform will be covered by the stove itself.

Next on the agenda is the checkerboard floor for the Great Cabin....as per Ben's 'suggestion'.  Though this may require Divine Intervention, I'll give it a shot.

A hex nut! Great thought Rich! The ingenuity on this site never ceases to amaze me I would have taken all day with a compass a pensile and probably a straight edge and it still  wouldnt have loked any better. Nice job. If your looking for making sheets of "glass" Davids acetate is your best bet I would think. If your trying to fill in an area like a recess there are liquid solutions at art stores. I used something called  Gallery Glass from Plaid Enterprises. It worked pretty good, not great, just pretty good. It was the best I found for filling recesses although it took several applications. My first choice would be the acetate though. Hope that helps
