I just have flipped two planks over when making the boiler and they take up stain dramatically different than the others. I just read up on debonding glue or I could just use good old brute force. I think I’ll just put it aside for a bit.

2 planks are starkly different than the others. It doesn’t show up as much in the photo. Otherwise some boiler progress.

Looks fantastic. I’m just starting this build and your pictures are a huge help. What color stain did you use? I really like that shade of grey/blue.

Finished the Conestoga wagon and wanted to get back to something in the water. There are a few other really good builds of this kit but what the hey, let’s add an amateurish version to balance things out. The cats agree this kit is pretty sweet. Started the keel. Clothespins to the rescue.

Photoetch brass black problems

Follow up: Now that I’ve made a mess of things, could I clean these parts somehow and start again with the techniques above with any hope of success? -
Photoetch brass black problems
Seems ok to me replied to Seems ok to me's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
Thanks for all the replies. It didn’t even occur to me to dilute the solution. The reaction speed could be an issue as I have a bunch of black grit come off as soon as the parts hit the solution. I had been using 00 steel wool to rough up the surface but doing much of a job on a tiny 5mm bits of brass was challenging to say the least. I will check out the link above as well. Thanks to all. -
Having primed and painted photoetch in the past only to have the paint flake off at the merest breath of a scratch, I am trying brass black on this bunch. Needless to say, the results are less than spectacular. My steps: -clean with acetone wearing gloves - dunk in fresh brass black (using birchwood Casey) for a few minutes -rinse in cold water, let dry. The main problem is poor coverage even when I repeat the blackening. The stuff seems to just wipe off and leave black dust all of the place. Some also developed a grayish hue. Any tips? What am I messing up?

I agree. Got me some rivets done this evening. The only problem I had is that the rivet heads (aka nails) are too big for the pre-existing holes and all had to be re-drilled. Oh well. That’s what audiobooks are for I guess.

Going together soooo nicely. For someone coming from a primarily plastic kit background, it is like a Tamiya kit in wood thus far.

Jumping right into an unusual one. I saw a previous build and scooped this kit up immediately. I need a break from rigging as well.

I’m gonna call this one done. I didn’t add sails but am pretty happy with the rigging. Overall, I’d say it came out ok for a first try on a ship like this. Lessons learned: CA glue is so dang shiny, my local hardware store has beeswax, ship directions are sorely lacking. However, this was a great learning experience and I’ll be doing another one soon.

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
