    hi kurt
tiles have worked out quite well......look even more terracottery with a coat of varnish.

the c clamps were inspired by a couple of clamps i brought from a german company called dictum.
lovely clamps ,beautifully made....and £8 each!!   there also a bit bigger and a lot heavier hence making my own.
so 12 clamps would be   £96 plus postage................instead £18 for a 6 inch piece of 1inch brass channel  with a 1/8" wall thickness plus a couple of quid for some m3 studding and some thumbnuts in stainless............and a bit of metal bashing!!!
all the work was done on the proxxon mill, tapped by hand and hand polished.
just waiting for some non serrated m3 stainless nylock flange nuts to finish them off.

just started to fit the first pieces of the wale.

    cheers.....mick

IT LOOKS A BIT HARSH AS WE SPEAK .......BUT WE SHALL SEE.

PUMP WELL AND SHOT LOCKERS CONSTRUCTED BUT NOT YET FITTED.....IM WAITING TO CONSTRUCT THE HINGES AND STOVE PLUS RUDDER PINTLES AND GUNPORT HINGES ALL AT THE SAME TIME.....A SORT OF MAD BRASS BINGE.

UPPER LIMIT OF WALE STRAKE HAS BEEN MARKED AND SOME PIECES OF EBONY EDGE BENT TO THE APPROPRIATE CURVE.
FIRST TWO PIECES ARE WAITING TO HAVE THIER HOOK SCARPHS FORMED PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.
THESE WILL RUN FROM FRAME 2 AFT TO FRAME O FORWARD PORT AND STARBOARD.

    hi all
    just a quick update.

    keelson has now been fitted

bolts for the scarf joints are 0.4mm copper........Goodwin says 1"-1/2" for these bolts so I spilt the difference and went for 3/4" more or less.

bolts for the keelson into the frames are 0.8mm copper at every other frame station again as per Goodwin ...approx. 1 1/2" full size.

quarter deck clamps are being glued in.....all treenails fitted prior to glueing.

    cheers for now.......mick

    hi al
all frame components for Washington and triton were cut out by hand with a jewellers saw with the appropriate blade.
unfortunately I don't have space in my workshop for a scroll saw as I work in a small spare room in the house.
I could put one in the garage but its too cold to work in there!!!

once the frames are cut out I use a proxxon sanding machine to establish the flat edges for the butt joins between frame components and also for sanding as much as the outside of the frame as possible.

I then resort to a dremel which is mounted in the dremel shaper table and fitted with a small sanding drum. I use this for all the inside curves and any bits on the outside that couldn't be dealt with on the proxxon.......sort of miniature spindle sander I suppose!

I tend to sand just to the outside of the line...all lines have a "thickness" so its my way of leaving a bit of meat on the bones for nibbling away at later!

    hope this helps.

    cheers.......mick

    hi all

time for another update. been busy installing gun port sills and stern framing,

starboard side stern framing had to come out as I made a boo boo with a couple of measurements.

    port side is ok.

made up a clamp to act as a saw guide for cutting out the sill rebates.....just a couple of pieces of 1/16 x 1/4 brass with tapped holes on one piece and clearance holes on the other for 3/4 inch 8ba bolts......I used an 8ba box spanner to tighten the nuts.....the silver tube in the photos.

just one more set of sills to go before I start on the lintels and finish the stern framing......then the sweep ports to fit.....and on to fairing the internals before fitting the keelson pieces.

    photos enclosed as per usual.

all comments and screams of approbation welcome.

    cheers for now.......mick

    hi al
congrats on the approaching retirement......ooh for all that lovely time for modelmaking.....oh well only twenty more years of toil to go.....government permitting.
enjoy experimenting with the pear and box....nice sharp tools and you will find it a revalation compared with the average kit material.
if at first you don't succeed......chuck it in the scrap box and try again!!!!
oh and invest in some isopropanol alchohol its bloomin useful stuff!!!

    hi alde
thanks for stopping by.I chose this ship to model for several reasons.
firstly it was a contemporary vessel to the sloop model I constructed previously and at the same scale.
secondly the research was pretty much done so no redrawing of plans, which I would hesitate to attempt , plus plans and frames were all drawn out.
thirdly it was a relatively straight forward hull shape, single decked, lateen rigged, with a modicum of armament and some interesting fiddly bits.

prior to starting this my only other scratch builds were the sloop and importantly the triton cross section. I would highly recommended this as a starting point for learning about frame making etc.

Washington was to be my first venture into a full hulled framed model. this was intended to be a learning curve prior to starting a fully framed model of hms echo ( I shall attempt the cross section first as a taster) and then hms euryalus.

all of this is thanks to model ship forum and learning from some seriously talented modelmakers on here.

go for it alde....whatever you decide to do there will be plenty of help and encouragement along the way.

    cheers....mick

    HI ALL

    FRAMES ARE NOW RAISED!!!!

    WITH ONE SMALL BOO BOO!!!!

PORT SIDE , FIRST HALF FRAME, LETTER "R" ON THE PLANS WAS,WELL, ALL OVER THE PLACE.

MUST HAVE BEEN A LACK OF CONCENTRATION WHEN FIXING THIS ONE.

SHIP BUILDERS BAND AID TO THE RESCUE......LIBERAL SOAK WITH ISO AND THE OFFENDING ITEM HAS BEEN REMOVED.

FORTUNATELY IT SEEMS I SANDED THE ANGLE AT THE FOOT INCORRECTLY.....VERY CAREFUL USE OF THE PROXXON SANDER AND THE CORRECT ANGLE HAS NOW BEEN ESTABLISHED WITH MINIMAL LOSS OF MATERIAL.

I WILL SEE HOW IT LOOKS WHEN IT GETS TRIAL FITTED TOMMORROW........IF ITS NO GOOD A NEW PART WILL HAVE TO BE MADE......BUT SO FAR IT LOOKS OK.

    NEW PHOTOS ENCLOSED.

NEXT UP WILL BE GUNPORT SILLS AND LINTELS.

    HI ALL
NOW THAT THE FORWARD CANT FRAMES ARE ALL IN ITS TIME TO START THE DREADED HAWSE PEICES.

THE LAMINATED BLOCKS FOR THESE WERE MADE UP PREVIOUSLY FROM SOME 1/8 INCH STOCK SOMEWHAT OVERSIZE MAINLY SO ID GOT SOMETHING TO HANG ON TO WHISLT I SHAPED THEM.

THE BLOCKS WERE SHAPED TO THE PLANVIEW OVER THER ENTIRE LENGTH FIRST.

A CARD STOCK PROFILE OF THE STEM REBATE...AFTER EDGE...WAS THEN MADE AND USED TO MARK OUT FOR THE FIRST SHAPING CUT WITH A JEWELLERS SAW. THE STEM PROFILE HAS BEEN TWEAKED WITH SOME RIFLER FILES UNTIL ITS ABOUT RIGHT....FINAL FINISHING WILL COME LATER WHEN THE HULL IS FAIRED.

THE ANGLE OF THE BLOCK MATCHES NICELY WITH THE ANGLE BETWEEN THE FORWARD FACE OF THE FINAL CANT FRAME AND THE STEM DEADWOOD SO HOPEFULLY IVE DONE SOMETHING RIGHT!!!!

THE NEXT PROFILE CUT WAS AGAINST THE FORWARD FACE OTF THE LAST CANT FRAME AGAIN WITH A JEWELLERS SAW AND FINISHED WITH RASPS.

SOME MORE SMOOTHING OF THE OUTSIDE FACES IS NEEDED AND SOME FINAL FETTLING OF THE EDGE THAT MATES UP WITH THE STEM REABTE.

THE NEXT AWKWARD BIT IS PROFILIG THE INSIDE FACE......AND THEN REPEATING FOR THE OTHER SIDE.

    HOPE THIS ALL MAKES SENSE!!

PHOTOS ENCLOSED ALL COMMENTS MOST WELCOME.

WORK ON THE CANT FRAMES CONTINUES......NEXT PAIR HAVE BEEN FITTED.

THE ACRYLIC JIGS HAVE HAD A LINE SCRIBED ACROSS AT THE LWL LEVEL....HOPE THIS SHOWS IN THE PHOTOS.

THE NEXT TWO PAIRS OF CANT FRAMES WILL HAVE TO BE SUPPORTED BY A FRESH PAIR OF JIGS.......THIS AFTERNOONS JOB WHILST THE GLUES SETTING......UNFORTUNATELY DESPITE ALANS SUGGESTION TURNING THE CURRENT JIGS AROUND MEANS I CANT GET MY CLAMPS IN PLACE.

NOT A MAJOR PROBLEM THE BYRNES SAW WILL MAKE SHORT WORK OF MAKING A NEW SET......I SHOULD OF GIVEN MUCH MORE THOUGHT TO THESE JIGS IN THE FIRST PLACE........FILE THAT IN THE MEMORY BANKS FOR THE NEXT BUILD!

WASHINGTON GALLEY PART 6........FIRST FRAME IS RAISED!!!!

    HI ALL
HAVING MADE THE LAST HALF FRAME AFT I DECIDED IT WAS PERHAPS WISE TO RAISE THIS FRAME FIRST
THE SINGLE AFT CANT FRAMES LEADING EDGE BUTTS UP AGAINST THE REAR FACE OF THIS FRAME SO IT MAKES SENSE.

I CAN THE WORK TOWARDS MIDSHIPS WITH THE REST OF THE AFT HALF FRAMES. I MAY THEN SWITCH MY ATTENTION TO THE FORWARD CANT AND HALF FRAMES AND THE DREADED HAWSE PIECES.

MIDSHIPS FRAMES ARE FROM ( 6 FRAMES FORWARD OF DEADFLAT AND 6 FRAMES AFT OF DEADFLAT) ALL THE SAME BASIC SHAPE WITH NO BEVEL. THE HEIGHTS ARE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT,TO ACCOUNT FOR THE SHEER,AND SOME HAVE RECESSES FOR THE GUNPORT SILLS AND SWEEP PORTS.......BATCH PRODUCTION TIME!

SO THATS WHERE I AM AT THE MOMENT.....TIME FOR A CELEBRATORY SNIFTER
