  1. Hi Bob~ Thank you very much for your compliment! I am not sure your high level of praise is deserved, nevertheless much appreciated!
  2. Next, the fore and main upper stay stoppers : small single stoppers applied. Now the dead eye fixture on the crow’s nest. I decided to follow the original plan - fixing the 5mm dead eyes with cotton thread instead of bronze. Finally, minor additions to crow's nest supporting structure.
  3. Hello shipmates! Latest progress report on GH1 & GH2: prep work for crow’s nest underbelly rigging (installing bolts for block attachments), installment of stoppers for stays, deadeye fixture on the crow’s nest, and some other minor additions. First the bolts on the underbelly of the crow’s nest. I started our with 4 (2 on the front, 2 on the back), but later I decided to add 4 more bolts on the front side (just in case). Next, the stopper for stay (between lower part of main mast and mizzen mast) For this one, I devised a larger and wider single design instead of applying multiple small stoppers. Same procedures applied to all masts for both GH1 & GH2.
  4. Thanks Patrick! I am always referencing your build logs anyway~ At the moment, I just need something specific and more detailed pertaining to fighting top (base and bottom part) only. I am currently going through similar builds including your Pelican.
  5. Hello shipmates! Just a quick update on GH1 and GH2 shipyards. The fighting tops are finally all done~ I am posting some pictures of these below. First up are the photos on the fighting top on mizzen mast. Significantly smaller than the fore and main mast fighting top. While working on the fore and main mast fighting tops, I devised a method for a quick marking of the 8 pillar positions. And when I started to work on the mizzen mast fighting top, I kind of forgot this method. Fortunately the memory came back quickly. So, I decided to document the methodology so that I don’t forget it next time. The mizzen mast fighting top on GH1 done and moving on to GH2. Pictures of both GH1 and GH2 with all the fighting tops done and put in place but not glued or fixed yet. Next, I am planning to put blocks under the fighting top structure before finally glueing things together. But, the Aeropiccola plans really lack details on rigging . Does anyone have a good picture of plan on fighting top block rigging please?
  6. Alan, thanks very much for spotting my mistake and informing me early!! Fixed those mistakes and re-uploaded the missing pictures~
  7. Hi shipmates~ Relatively short updates on the progress of fighting top. Firstly, the process applied to GH1 has been replicated in GH2 as below. Followed by mizzen mast fighting top work on both GH1 & GH2 as below. At first, I planned and designed the structure of fighting top as below. However, I soon realized that the 30 degree interval between pillars was making the floor of the fighting top too crowded. So, I changed the design to reflect a 45 degree interval. With the first templates made out of the wooden hanger material, the tedious work of making each pillar and quarter piece continues. I was pretty sure that I needed to do some reinforcement work (possibly near the floor area) as there are just 8 pillars (instead of 12). But, the end result with just 8 pillars is surprisingly robust. So, no further modification seems necessary. Finished second fighting top and continuing with the tedious work streams.
  8. Hi Johnny, Thanks for the additional clarification! Well, I guess I will need to contemplate a bit more on this~ Regards, Rock
  9. Hi Johnny, Thanks very much for your valuable comments and suggestions. I do agree with you on the trimmed balcony. However, I did find some examples (I could not re-dig the pictures) where the balconies were quite slim (or almost non-existent) on the sides. This was an experiment anyway~ But, with better reception by my art student daughter! On the 2 bow guns, I really wanted to incorporate them but the only space possible would be on the deck of the forecastle. I could not find any historical evidence that this was done. But, then again I could be wrong. I could put 2 small guns on the top of the forecastle. Let me dig further on this possibility. Anyway, I am very grateful for your comments. Much appreciated!! Regards, Rock
  10. Next, the deck of the crow’s nest. I decided to use quite different design from the plan in order to provide some room for rigging lines and etc. at the back of the crow’s nest. For this, I had to shift the whole structure a bit towards the stern, making the crow’s nest appear to be located more in the middle of the mast (instead of slightly forward protruding towards the bow). Repeating similar procedures for the foremast.
  11. Moving on to the upper level of the main mast and mast cap, I realized that I almost ran out of the wooden hanger material from Ikea. And since there are no more broken wooden hangers, I had utilize a perfectly well functioning wooden hanger - for which I obtained wife’s permission.
  12. Hello shipmates! I have resumed the work on GH1. First, I installed couple of stuffs that I forgot to incorporate in GH1 (like the ship’s bell). And then the mast work started. Starting with the main mast, following are some pictures of preliminary works. The wood from wooden cloth hanger (from Ikea I think) proved to be valuable again - for the mast cap as well as the thin supporting structure for crow’s nest.
  13. Thanks for the encouragement, Patrick! Much appreciated!
  14. Hi all~ Finally, the hull work on GH2 is complete. Below are some pictures of GH2. Comparing GH1 with GH2. GH2 is definitely simpler and darker than GH1. They both seem to have their charm. Also, GH2 (as intended) has more contrast in color compared to GH1. Now, I am resuming the work on GH1 - masts, rigging etc.
  15. Hello shipmates~ A small update today. With the remnants of the small wooden clips, I made portholes(not sure if this is the right jargon) for the lines that would lead inside (from outside) to be tied to the staghorns. Below are some pictures of the work carried out. I have not applied this feature in GH1. But, I think I need to (or at least I will try to). Also, there is slightly different feature vis-a-vis the weatherdeck cannons. I tried to render a situation where some cannons are stowed away. GH2 hull work is almost finished. My next update will feature the comparison photos of GH2 to GH1 and the resumption of work on GH1 - masts, rigging and so on.
  16. Thanks very much, Patrick! Your encouragement means a lot to me!!
  17. Hello shipmates~! Some updates on GH2 (Golden Hind 2) where the methodologies I applied and/or materials I used differ from GH1. The whipstaff house design is more or less same as GH1, but I used slightly different methods to put them together more solidly. For the staghorn kevel, I was looking for a more solid material that could be thinner/smaller and still provide strong structural strength. I accidentally came across a small wooden tweezer in a discount store that satisfied my original purpose but also provided me with basic shapes that I can utilize as is for the kevel creation. As you can see from above picture, I used most of its original shape to construct the kevel. Saving me much time! Slightly thinner and smaller ones are the new kevels.
  18. Hi all~ Just a small update… I realized that for GH1, I forgot to install the ship’s bell. So, for GH2, I made a tiny bell out of left-over dowel and painted it black, varnished with matt varnish. I think it turned out OK. I tried different methods and made couple of more for future projects. I may try to install it for GH1 as well once I resume with the rigging work on GH1.
  19. Thanks very much, Robert! I will definitely try to be more active~
  20. Thanks very much, Patrick! Hope to be able to engage more in MSW forums going forward!!
