It seems with each new planking day, I have to invent a new method of clamping them. This is my latest find. From my hardware store's picture framing section. Small, plastic flip clamps. They work very well on this section of the hull. They hold them nice and tight and I don't have to nail as many planks as before.

I'm working on the bottom up planks and I'm amazed that I can make them twist 90 degrees with just 15 minutes soaking and forming them in position until dry, then glueing them. This very hard wood doesn't want to bend on the flat, but twists like a pretzel longitudonely (sic).

    Hi Glenn,
I'm on my second ship and stumbled onto the method you just described. I started at the top and went down nine planks. Now, I'm starting on the bottom. So far full width planks have worked very nicely. I'll probably get upward of three planks when I will have to start the tedious job of tapering. It's great to read your process. It builds my confidence that I will wind up with nice planking.
    Thanks,

While I was waiting for the glue to dry on my last plank. I decided to layout the deck plan for gun ports, etc. I had to re-do it twice because of the kit's plan's discrepancies. They had labeled one port as a gun port when it's supposed to be an anchor port of a different dimension. Then they had different dimensions on the deck plan from the side plan where gun ports would go. If I would have stuck with my original layout, I would have had major conflicts with rigging, etc. I'm glad I caught it before I glued stuff togther.

In case anyone looking thinks I'm on vacation....I'm not...I'm still planking away. Photos show primary bending in a jig after soaking and hot iron bending. Then I final bend actually on the hull with clips and rubber bands and nails and wetting with an eye dropper. Next step (tomorrow) final glueing of the plank. It's time consuming, but the planks look good even before sanding.

I took a paper clip and bent it to make a hook and added a plastic "cushion" so as not to mar the plank and I pull the plank as tight as possible to the upper plank while the glue dries. It works for me.

I "rounded" all those bend quite nicely. That's the result of several three dimensional twists, turns and bends.

This is plank # 7 starboard side. I'm going to place a few more on the starboard side to correct a small error I made when bowing the # four plank. # 4 plank wound up with a little too much bow in it and I have to squeeze each lower plank a little bit closer to where it should be. One or two more planks and will  match the port side. It's a small enough error that only I would know, but I'm striving to make this one nice. At this rate I can do a plank a day. If the hot water heater springs a leak like it did two days ago, I will miss a plank.

Ole speedy finished six planks on each side. First, the gun ports slowed me down, now I have to bevel the back edges of the planks so they can round the bend on the way to the keel. I also have to angle the vertical bulkheads to fit the fore and aft bend. It's a lot of measure, cut, file, sand....then measure again, and cut, file, sand until it just slips into place real nice. So far I'm happy with the results thanks to all your tips and suggestions.
    Thanks,

Brian, I only use nails occasionally to help shape the plank, but not after glueing. I use rubber bands (lots of them) and "T" pins. It seems to work so far. Wayne, that's not a wieght, it's a broom handle with a piece of swim noodle to help support the hull while working on it. Thanks for the comments.

Even my wife commented today, "Gee, you're not making much progress, are you?"

And I say, "Dam the torpedo of comments, I'm dancing as fast as I can."

Actually, the kit maker says, try to make the first layer of planks your final layer, but they do give you a veneer layer just in case. I'm trying to make this first layer as neat as I can make it.

By now, I have combined several of all your suggestions to bend these very difficult planks into net shape. It's still very frustrating when I find myself almost at the shape I want and the plank splinters...wet, and heat, and all? I've now figured out how to salvage these planks with small splits. I can't tell it's repaired, but it adds a day.

I finished eleven rows of planks. Six to port and five to starboard. This material is hard as steel. It doesn't want to bend, twist or sand/file easliy? It will bend up or down while laying flat, though. So far I've managed to keep these planks the full length of the hull (27 inches).

I don't know which is slower...a tortise, a glacier or my planking speed. Like I said at the beginning of this project..."How do you eat an elephant"  "Start chewing on the toe."

The electric plank bender came after I ordered it from ModelExpo on E-Bay. It's a Model Shipways Electric Plank Bender with a curved pattern block. Model Expo is a great place to buy hobby supplies. I'll let you all know how the bender works after I soak a few planks and try it. I built an aluminum clad holder to set the hot bender on while working.

    Thank Brian,
I'm going to try some of your magic. My bending tool is okay, but I think shaping the plank right on the hull might be better. We'll see.
    Thanks, Rich

I finally finished roughing all the false gun ports! They were my second biggest worry, but they came out fairly square and all lined up. . My first worry is how will I build the upper gun ports? I'll cross that bridge after 50 or 60 more hull planks below the false gun ports.

I planked and varnished my below decks even though I'm not sure anyone will ever see them when they look down the grates. I asked that same question when my plans called for me to plank these hidden decks. I think it was Augie or Sjors who said, "You'll know they're planked even though you can't see them." Well, mine are done. It didn't take that long.

HIPEXEC got a reaction from WackoWolf in Cutting gunports into bulkheads
I faced the same dilema with my USS Constituion. The plans called for me to plank the hull then cut the gun ports. I didn't like that since I'm not that good at measuring and cutting and the hull planks are heavy duty and hard to cut.. So, I made frames in the hull for all 30 gunports then I  cut the hull planks in my miter box and get nice square cuts. It worked! I'm happy with the false gunports. For me it was easier to measure and make frames.  They didn't have to be perfect. The ports wound up be fairly accurately placed. I made a strip of light balsa wood and drew the ports on it from the plans. The I used that  to locate each port one at a time. I also made a exact square the size of the port to use as a check before I glued anything in place. Sounds more complicated than it was. I'm sure I didn't save anytime, but I wound up with nice ports.
    Hope this helps a little

False gun ports finished starboard side and almost finished port side. I'm waiting for my new electric plank bender before proceeding with the rest of the planks. Using the steam iron just is not precise enough.

That cutter just might do it, Harvey.
Here's some pics of the roughed out gun ports on the starboard side. When I finish planking, this will all be filed and sanded smooth with straight edges.
